Welcome to the new Debaclation Nation, a fancy title for this Web site's new poll center.
Each week, I'll post an interesting (or boring) Debaclation Nation poll so you can vote and argue over it. I'll keep the Debaclation Nation polls archived, so you can go back and keep arguing or see who was right. So much for the new CBA being signed on Thursday. Who has been the bigger jerk in the past 24-48 hours, the players or the owners? July 22 |

No CBA: Who has been the bigger jerk in the past 24-48 hours, the players or the owners?
We all thought football was saved. When the NFL owners finished up their 2-hour lunch and voted 31-0 (Al Davis abstaining, of course, because it was daytime so he couldn't go outside since he melts in the sun), we all thought the CBA was a done deal.
Well, at least the people on Twitter thought so. From what I read in my timeline, all of us football fans were happy - until, that is, the NFL players alerted the media that they would not be voting on the CBA on Thursday night, and according to George Wilson, perhaps not on Friday night either.
The NFL players haven't had enough time to look at the document. That's fair. However, players like New Orleans' Heath Evans, Jacksonville's Mike Sims-Walker and Buffalo's George Wilson expressed their frustration via Twitter and the actual media, citing that the NFL owners have deceived them by putting stuff into the CBA that was never agreed upon.
So, are the NFL owners sly douche bags who put pressure on the NFL players as a PR move? Perhaps. But something isn't right. Evans and Wilson complained about new stuff being in the CBA, yet they say they haven't even seen it. Evans admitted as much on NFL Network. Wilson, meanwhile, was asked repeatedly by Paul Burmeister why he couldn't, in his own words, take the new agreement to his teammates. Wilson ducked Burmeister's question each time. I watched the interview with my dad as we were eating dinner. The third time Wilson avoided the question, my dad bellowed, "F*** you, a**hole, you're not answering because you're a f***ing liar!"
Here's my take on all of this nonsense - the owners did in fact use Thursday's stunt as a PR move, but it wouldn't make sense for them to change the agreement of the CBA. I just believe that the NFL players feel disrespected that the owners did it this way, and they may unfortunately delay voting on this CBA out of pure stubbornness.
Let's hope it doesn't come to that. Some NFL players often don't take to kindly to being disrespected because they believe respect should be served to them on a silver platter. However, we can only hope that they see the bigger picture - that they make money playing football, and they're going to lose their fan base - and as a consequence, their money - each day they delay signing this CBA.
As I tweeted (@walterfootball), "NFL players want more money. NFL players want fewer practices. I'd be happy just to play football for a living. #wewantfootball."
TRcasTitans31 quickly replied to me, "Owners want more money and slipped unapproved things into the CBA, I'd be happy just to be a billionaire. Works both ways." Not quite. The owners own the teams. They can do whatever they want. It's their business. NFL players, meanwhile, don't have to play football. They're free to sell insurance, drive trucks or flip hamburgers. No one's forcing them to play football, despite what Adrian Peterson may think.
But the NFL players won't sell insurance, drive trucks or flip hambugers because they have a far better job than 99.9 percent of the people in America. But for some reason, they just don't seem to realize that.
That's my take. I think the NFL players are the bigger jerks, but don't let me sway you either way. Vote on whom you think is the bigger jerk, and discuss it in the comment board below the poll.

Ironduke, every NFL player does vanish. In 10 years, Peyton Manning won't be quarterbacking the Colts, yet Colts fans will continue to pay to see the team. The fans love the team because the team is permanent. The players are temporary.

That is ridiculous. If every NFL player vanished from the face of the earth, the league would cease to exist. Professional sports are all about the personalities.

Lordfootball, sounds like you're trying too hard to be a contrarian. The players don't have to play football. They can do something else. Some make more money in a year that a doctor will make in a lifetime. The owners are making a lot too, but they've invested a ton of money into a business. Players, meanwhile, come and go. They can go if they don't want to sign the CBA.

@redfield
They are not just employees!!! They are also the product. Their names and likenesses are worth just as much as their production on the field. What don't you people understand about this?

lordfootball is no more pretentious than calling yer site walter football and having it polluted with NBA tripe.
Do not compare the NFL with any other business when they charge you 10$ for a beer or 350 $ for a jersey that cost 19$ from china they have a monopoly and for that reason they are held to a different standard. They are no more ethical than a crack dealer that gets the customer hooked and then JACKs the price up once the need has become an addiction. They blackmail city & state governments to get the sweetheart lease deals they need and do not lose a blink of sleep worrying about the hardships they may cause other segments of society due to forcing their will down the publics throats. They pay the players well but that does not dismiss the need for ethical treatment and long lasting health care for the risk the players undertake. The owners have shown the players how to leverage and cannot really whine when the players follow the example the owners have set . The way past players have been treated is reprehensible and hopefully will be rectified going forward. I have read more than one guy say I would gladly do it for what they make ..... as tony montana once so eloquently said ......"well why didn't you then" the truth is the players are special and the owners are just spoiled rich kids that always get what they want and have mostly total disdain for the underclasses that support their lifestyle .... they are simply supplyside morons that preach the market the market the market right until they need a bailout or a special circumstance or are deemed to big to fail You can be brainwashed if you like I however choose to have empathy for the guys that actually approach this deal as their livelyhood and not just a means to buy another estate or fund their great great great grandchildrens trust fund . The owners( with a couple exceptions) don't give a crap about the game the are in for a fast buck and will take the money elsewhere and let the team go to hell if it is the right business decision .

@lordfootball
first off, lord football? secondly, walt made an analogy (believe it was walt) that swung me from siding with the players to siding with the owners and I haven't budged an inch since That analogy is one in which the NFL is like any other business. Imagine it in that scenario, what business can you as an employee make demands such as "show us how much money you make". The nfl players are spoiled and forget they are employees as well as getting payed to play football.

seeing the wildly lopsided voting is dizzying to me.
To me rooting for the owners is like rooting for the house in blackjack ... what ? are you stupid ? Half these jackstool owners inherited their cash and the other half likely made it by being ruthless or underhanded in other arenas. Yet the public is flocking to people that would not let you wipe the dust off their shoes. The owners milk municipalities for every dime threatening to move to LA at every hesitation to build a new stadium. these owners use other peoples money to finance their lifestyles and then try to paint the men who risk their safety and long term health on the line weekly . People are rooting for credit ratings or trust funds & not players who busted their asses for over a decade to even get to the NFL . welcome to BIZARRO WORLD What do you root for CHASE and WELLS FARGO also ? - may as well if you root for the owners they are getting the world laid at their feet and want you to kiss their ass at the same time The league has been refining the public relations angles with guys like jason lacanfora, paid disinformation specialists that sway public opinion towards normally distasteful positions ever since goodell took power. The league does very little without making a media plant to sway or test opinion . If you believe the lies consider yerself stoopid ..... the owners and the league have declared class warfare - make no mistake - side with the players or you are like a herd of cattle siding with the butcher

I'm pretty sure the Owners got what they wanted I'm always one the believe the players and will stick with them I wouldn't put it past the owners to slide things into the deal because they think they are the people that make the NFL work when in fact its the players who put their bodies on the line if they didn't have the players there would be no NFL they wouldn't be making millions of dollars

The owners can do whatever they want, it is a sheer mistake to believe that these players are smart enough to read through a new chat anyways! Sure Jeff Saturday and a few others, but let's face it, the majority of these guys can barely piece together proper sentences in english for two minutes post game interviews.
In the end I respect the owners, and the players who speak proper english, the majority of the players have no idea how good they have it. If I could play pro football and get paid the minimum, I would consider myself fortunate. 20 years from now this will happen again because the players from this era are broke and became hardcore debtorsbecause slit of these guys are not smart and guess what? The owners will still have all the money!

50 percent of players would be in jail if it weren't for the NFL. I love the GAME and the team not the players. Replace em with college players and within a yearor two we forget all about most of the current players. We do it every year now in the draft. The owners made this mess though and have no one to blame but themselves. The only real victims are the fans, we foot the bill for all these greedy bastards.

The owners put things into this CBA that was not agreed on with the players, then pulled this stunt to make the players look like the bad guys if they don't approve it too. That's a class A dick move. I want football just as much as everyone else, but the owners screwed this up, not the players.

In short, while the owners do, indeed, "own" the NFL business, it all boils down to money. Players want more. Owners want more. They realize, however, that the FANS are the powerful ones for without us, jerseys wouldn't be bought, games wouldn't be attended and they wouldn't get "their" money. WE hold the power. I hate money. Can't wait until the financial system collapses... :)

The owners hands down. I despise the tactics of them using Power Plays to FORCE the Union into recertifying, then telling them they only have 72 hours after that to convince the owners to give them better workers comp or being forced to play the 2006 WC Rules.
