2011 NFL MOCK DRAFT – WALT’ GREG’S ROUND 1 | GREG’S ROUND: 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7
Greg Cox was a senior writer at TheFootballExpert.com and appeared as a guest on the NFL Network’s Path to the Draft. Send Greg an e-mail here: [email protected]

  1. Carolina Panthers: Rob Housler, TE, Florida Atlantic
If Cam Newton is going to “be consistency,” he is going to need someone who can catch at tight end. The Panthers were averse to adding receiving options at the position under John Fox, but are free to do so now.

    MISSING

  2. Buffalo Bills: Willie Smith, OT, East Carolina
Personally I think the Bills need help at both tackle positions, but they appear to be focused on the right side.

  3. Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Lefeged, S, Rutgers
Free agency is going to hurt the safety position for the Bengals. I hope no one asks me about Joe Lefeged during radio interviews this week. Even after Mike Mayock talking about his mother explaining how to pronounce his last name during their meeting in an elevator during Senior Bowl week, I still can’t figure it out.

  4. Kansas City Chiefs: Kris O’Dowd, C, USC
Offensive linemen can play well into their 30s, but Casey Wiegmann is getting close to 40.

  5. Arizona Cardinals: Lee Ziemba, OG/T, Auburn
The aforementioned issues at guard could leave the Cardinals double-dipping there, or they might use Lee Ziemba at right tackle. Either way the offensive line needs to be upgraded.

  6. Cleveland Browns: Chimdi Chekwa, CB, Ohio State
Adding LSU’s Patrick Peterson would set up a dream tandem at cornerback, but failing that the Browns still need an addition because Sheldon Brown is old and Eric Wright could be gone after a poor season.

  7. Houston Texans: Korey Lindsey, CB, Southern Illinois
The Texans just tried to address the cornerback position early in the draft, and truth be told are probably better served going after a veteran in free agency. Unfortunately there is no such thing at the moment.

Instead they make a few additions and hope someone surprises them. Korey Lindsey is someone they have looked at.

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Shareece Wright, CB, USC
Antoine Winfield is, like every other human on the planet, getting older. Cedric Griffin is coming off an ACL injury. The Vikings are going to add help at cornerback.

  9. Kansas City Chiefs: Jeremy Beal, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
I am indecisive on where to put Jeremy Beal and whether or not to give the Chiefs an outside linebacker. I have solved both problems with this pick. At this juncture Beal is not a high risk player, but could surprise with his ability to make plays opposite of Tamba Hali if he gets a chance.

  10. San Francisco 49ers: Owen Marecic, FB, Stanford
I get the feeling Jim Harbaugh is going to push for his two-way player to join him and make the short trek from Palo Alto. The 49ers need a fullback and Owen Marecic is going to be useful on special teams as well.

  11. Tennessee Titans: Pernell McPhee, DE, Mississippi State
The Titans are looking to add size at the defensive end position where they just spent a first-round pick on Derrick Morgan. Unfortunately Morgan got hurt, and this is another option for the rotation assuming he comes back healthy and earns a starting role.

  12. Dallas Cowboys: Bilal Powell, RB, Louisville
Remember when the Cowboys were loaded in the backfield? They still are on paper, but it has not translated on the field. Bilal Powell gives them a power option because Marion Barber is not running like he used to.

  13. Washington Redskins: Ian Williams, NT, Notre Dame
The Redskins are lucky to get a nose tackle prospect here in the fifth round because they desperately need one. Counting on Albert Haynesworth when they switched to a 3-4 was a huge mistake.

  14. St. Louis Rams: Robert Sands, FS, West Virginia
Craig Dahl and James Butler are not getting it done at safety for the Rams, so they are looking at Robert Sands amount others as a possible upgrade.

  15. Miami Dolphins: Denarious Moore, WR, Tennessee
Speed is a missing element at wide receiver for the Dolpins. Given their limited picks, this is their best option to solve that problem.

  16. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jeron Johnson, SS, Boise State
I have run out of Reggie Nelson jokes. The Jaguars need to add another option after he busted and was traded away.

  17. Oakland Raiders: Chris Hairston, OT, Clemson
A new blocking scheme and coaching changes coupled with free agency departures will ensure the Raiders make multiple additions on the offense line in the draft. Chris Hairston is a player they have given a look.

  18. Philadelphia Eagles: Greg McElroy, QB, Alabama
If, as expected, the Eagles trade away Kevin Kolb whenever the NFL opens free agency, they are going to be in the market for another quarterback. Their confidence in Mike Kafka to be a competent backup is fine, but a little insurance in the form of an experienced winner at the collegiate level makes good sense. That is probably why they are eyeing Greg McElroy.

  19. Minnesota Vikings: Terrell McClain, DT, South Florida
The Williams Wall has pretty much crumbled. Pat is done and Kevin has finally succumbed to the suspension stemming from the StarCaps situation. They need more help on the defensive line.

  20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Roy Helu Jr., RB, Nebraska
Cadillac Williams might stay and he might not. The Buccaneers have to consider his previous knee surgeries and weigh the option of drafting a player to pair up with undrafted gem LeGarrette Blount.

    MISSING

  21. Indianapolis Colts: Jake Kirkpatrick, C, TCU
Jeff Saturday will not be playing on Sunday much longer. The Colts are going to be looking for a replacement which is why they are considering Jake Kirkpatrick.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Alex Henery, K/P, Nebraska
David Akers has been solid for this franchise since 2000, and this is not just about his heavy hearted misses in the playoffs. He is going turn 38 in December and even though kickers can function as they get older, he has only connected from beyond 50 yards twice over the past two seasons. Alex Henery would be another weapon for this offense.

  23. Detroit Lions: Alex Green, RB, Hawaii
Jahvid Best is not going to hold up if he is overused. Alex Green gained a lot of experience in pass protection playing at Hawaii and is a solid late-round sleeper as a result.

  24. Washington Redskins: Chykie Brown, CB, Texas
Free agency puts the Redskins in a precarious position at cornerback.

  25. Seattle Seahawks: Pierre Allen, DE, Nebraska
Depth on the defensive line is going to be sought in the later rounds by the Seahawks.

  26. Seattle Seahawks: Ahmad Black, SS, Florida
The Seahawks acquired this selection from the Ravens for Josh Wilson.

Mike Mayock is going to explode when a team selects Ahmad Black on Day 3. The Seahawks could use another player capable of making a play or two in the secondary. It is tough to project Black as a starter, but in certain situations he can help a defense.

  27. Atlanta Falcons: Derrick Locke, WR/RB, Kentucky
I think the Falcons are looking at Derrick Locke as a playmaker, so I am listing him as a running back and wide receiver.

  28. New England Patriots: Ricky Elmore, DE/OLB, Arizona
If the Patriots hold all of their picks there is no way all of the players can make the roster, so these choices are really just bargaining chips to move up or down. I do think they could take another stab at outside linebacker if the value is right.

My dream is for the rival Jets to draft Ricky Elmore’s teammate Brooks Reed so ESPN can talk about this every week. Oh wait, that’s my nightmare.

  29. Chicago Bears: Doug Hogue, OLB, Syracuse
Lance Briggs is getting long in the tooth and the Bears need to think about reloading at outside linebacker.

  30. New York Jets: Jah Reid, OT, Central Florida
I think the Jets are fine with using Vladimir Ducasse at right tackle, but they have given Jah Reid a look and might take him to hedge their bets.

  31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Julius Thomas, TE, Portland State
The Steelers are poking around Julius Thomas who would be an interesting addition on offense.

  32. Green Bay Packers: Zach Hurd, G, Connecticut
A player who just left college is going to replace Daryn Colledge. I find this amusing because I get delirious after hours and hours of compiling mock drafts.

  33. Baltimore Ravens: Dwayne Harris, WR, East Carolina
There are enough question marks at the wide receiver position for the Ravens to double dip.

  34. Baltimore Ravens: Tim Barnes, C, Missouri
Matt Birk turns 35 in July. The Ravens need to consider their backup plans in a hurry.
