Fantasy Football - Sample Draft
Rounds 1-6

Rounds 1-6 | Rounds 7-18

JunkyardJake.com recently organized a fantasy football league for some of the football Web sites across the internet. Twelve of the following sites were chosen to compete in the Bum Phillips Texas Barbecue Fantasy Expert Challenge:

The draft was 18 rounds, and the order is the one I displayed above. Here's how the draft went, along with comments from each site (if available). Keep in mind that all touchdowns are worth six points, and receptions do not count in this league.

Round 1
  1. MonsterDraft.com selects LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, Chargers
The first choice is an easy one. It'll be a little tougher at 2.12.

  2. FantasySportsCentral.com selects Steven Jackson, RB, Rams
    No-brainer.

  3. FantasyFootballXtreme.com selects Larry Johnson, RB, Chiefs
    No comment available.

  4. RotoTimes.com selects Shaun Alexander, RB, Seahawks
    No comment available.

  5. FantasyIndex.com selects Frank Gore, RB, 49ers
    No comment available.

  6. RotoWorld.com selects Laurence Maroney, RB, Patriots
    No comment available.

  7. SportsGrumblings.com selects Joseph Addai, RB, Colts
    No comment available.

  8. FFJungle.com selects Willie Parker, RB, Steelers
Here's hoping that Mike Tomlin follows the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mantra.

  9. FantasyFootballWhiz.com selects Clinton Portis, RB, Redskins
Honestly, this is the toughest point of the draft to make a selection as all the very good running backs are gone. So, Brian Westbrook is the next best on the board and I have him ranked fifth on the board.

Walt's Note: Confused? As was I. This owner meant to take Brian Westbrook, but clicked on Clinton Portis instead. I lucked out, as you'll see in a second.

  10. FFToolbox.com selects Peyton Manning, QB, Colts
With a majority of the premier RB's gone, its a real blessing to find Manning still available at pick 1.10. Manning is the best overall passer in the NFL with two premier receivers in Harrison and Wayne, and a dynamic young playmaker Joseph Addai in the backfield. Expecting huge things from Manning in 2007.

  11. WalterFootball.com selects Brian Westbrook, Eagles
Brian Westbrook averaged 5.1 yards per carry behind one of the largest offensive lines in the league last year. With Donovan McNabb nicked up, I expect Andy Reid to run the ball more. If not, Westbrook will continue to be a large factor in the aerial attack.

Walt's Note: As I said, I'm really lucky Westbrook lasted this far. If he didn't make it here, my indecision would have made me run out of time to pick in Minnesota Viking-like fashion.

  12. JunkyardJake.com selects Reggie Bush, RB, Saints
    No comment available.

Round 2
  1. JunkyardJake.com selects Ronnie Brown, RB, Dolphins
    No comment available.

  2. WalterFootball.com selects Steve Smith, WR, Panthers
Was deciding between Steve Smith and a specific RB. Smith's the safer bet.

Walt's Note: The running back I was thinking about was Travis Henry. As you'll soon see, taking Smith over Henry turned out to be a grave mistake.

  3. FFToolbox.com selects Rudi Johnson, RB, Bengals
Steve Smith would've been a nice pick here, but with him gone and Rudi Johnson still on the board this pick became very easy. Rudi Johnson has rushed for at least 1,300 yards in each of the last three seasons, and scored 12 TD's in each. Pleasantly surprised to find a #1 stud RB to pair with QB Peyton Manning.

  4. FantasyFootballWhiz.com selects Travis Henry, RB, Broncos
Well, I will not make the same mistake here at 2.04. Travis Henry proved that he still has what it takes to be one of the top backs in the league, and moving to Denver will even magnify that fact, as Denver has created a 1000+ yard rusher in each of the last five seasons. I feel good about this one.

    Walt's Note: Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!

  5. FFJungle.com selects Marvin Harrison, WR, Colts
Old reliable...however, I'm hoping that the "old" part holds off one more year! Harrison is as consistent a fantasy performer as they come, posting eight straight seasons with 1,100 yards and 10 scores. His 1,366 yards and 12 TDs solidified him as the top-scoring receiver in many scoring formats last season. Even if there is a slight drop-off in his production, Harrison should provide excellent numbers. Parker and Harrison should make a potent one-two punch (other than Week 6 when they are both on bye).

  6. SportsGrumblings.com selects Willis McGahee, RB, Ravens
    No comment available.

  7. RotoWorld.com selects Brandon Jacobs, RB, Giants
    No comment available.

  8. FantasyIndex.com selects Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jaguars
I was sort of hoping McGahee would reach me here, and also considered taking a player at another position. However, Jones-Drew is one of only 2-3 running backs left who I really like as a second starter, and I doubt any of them would make it back to me next round. He's the pick.

  9. RotoTimes.com selects Edgerrin James, RB, Cardinals
    No comment available.

  10. FantasyFootballXtreme.com selects Chad Johnson, RB, Bengals
    No comment available.

  11. FantasySportsCentral.com selects Torry Holt, WR, Rams
    No comment available.

  12. MonsterDraft.com selects Terrell Owens, WR, Cowboys
Taking a bit of a chance here with the temperamental Owens. Hoping for at least a one year honeymoon with new head coach. He was definitely the focus of Romo's attention last year, and that should continue.

Round 3
  1. MonsterDraft.com selects Antonio Gates, TE, Chargers
Can't wait any longer here. I've got to lock up the top TE to match with the top RB and probable top 5 WR. Week 7 will be dicey with Gates and Tomlinson resting, but love the potential payoff.

  2. FantasySportsCentral.com selects Reggie Wayne, WR, Colts
    No comment available.

  3. FantasyFootballXtreme.com selects Thomas Jones, RB, Jets
Very solid value if you ask me. Thomas Jones is a guy people will wish they didn't doubt -- again. Tomlinson, Chad and T. Jones... Great start.

Walt's Note: Ummm... I think he means Johnson; not Tomlinson.

  4. RotoTimes.com selects Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Cardinals
    No comment available.

  5. FantasyIndex.com selects Tom Brady, QB, Patriots
A shade earlier than I'd like, but he's our No. 2 QB, and the scoring system is a factor.

  6. RotoWorld.com selects Andre Johnson, WR, Texans
    No comment available.

  7. SportsGrumblings.com selects Marshawn Lynch, RB, Bills
    No comment available.

  8. FFJungle.com selects Cedric Benson, RB, Bears
Benson is a risk, but I need a second running back since several other players I desire are still available. I am picking Benson based on potential. He and Thomas Jones combined for over 1,850 rushing yards and 12 TDs last season. Now that Jones is gone, Benson is the undisputed feature back. That means that the numbers that he and Jones produced together should primarily belong to the former Texas standout this year. If he can give me at least 1,200 yards and 10 TDs, Benson is a bargain at 32. That is a big "if."

  9. FantasyFootballWhiz.com selects Lee Evans, WR, Bills
Lee Evans has to be the selection at this point of the draft. He found his nitch in his third season with the Bills. Losman came along nicely as the season came to a close. He and Evans should become a formidable duo for the 2007 season.

Walt's Note: Great pick. I was definitely going to take Evans with one of my next two selections.

  10. FFToolbox.com selects Javon Walker, WR, Broncos
I really like what I hear coming out of Denver about Jay Cutler this offseason. With the addition of a stud RB in Travis Henry; Javon Walker will have plenty of open field to work with. While I would like to draft another RB I can't justify passing on a phenomenal WR like Javon Walker.

  11. WalterFootball.com selects Donald Driver, WR, Packers
One of the most underrated players in the NFL, Donald Driver produces every year. I love that he's my No. 2 WR.

Walt's Note: Would you look at that... all the good running backs are gone. That's exactly why taking Steve Smith over Travis Henry was a huge error. I could have obtained a solid No. 2 RB, and chosen Driver and T.J. Houshmandzadeh with these two picks.

  12. JunkyardJake.com selects Carson Palmer, QB, Bengals
I'm a little concerned with the slight downgrade in the Bengals offensive line, but surprised that Palmer is available in the late 3rd round.

Round 4
  1. JunkyardJake.com selects Anquan Boldin, WR, Cardinals
Hoping the Cardinals coaching change means more than 2 TDs from Boldin, but he's still solid regardless.

  2. WalterFootball.com selects DeAngelo Williams, Panthers
I know I'm reaching here, but most of the top RBs are gone, and I need a second. All of DeAngelo Williams' production came in the 2nd half of 2006, so it looks like John Fox will utilize more often than DeShaun Foster. Plus, Carolina has a very easy schedule in terms of opposing rush defenses.

Walt's Note: A horrible pick and a reach, but I have to stand by it. I needed a No. 2 running back. DeAngelo Williams was the best guy available. I'm regretting not taking Travis Henry more and more...

  3. FFToolbox.com selects Adrian Peterson, RB, Vikings
Like the team so far...Expecting big things from the highly talented Peterson. Should be a great #2 back to go along with R.Johnson. This kid has stud written all over him.

  4. FantasyFootballWhiz.com selects Roy Williams, WR, Lions
I have to go with Roy Williams here being that this league requires three starting wide receivers and having Evans and Williams together is a very nice start. I have both ranked 5 and 6, with Williams being 5. With him being in a Mike Martz offense, I will be rest-assured that he will post numbers within the elite status at the position.

  5. FFJungle.com selects T.J. Houshmandzadeh, WR, Bengals
For this pick, I was choosing between Roy Williams and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. However, when Williams was selected one pick before my slot at 41, the choice was made for me. That is okay, though. Houshmandzadeh missed the first game last season and still finished a mere 11 points behind Williams in the rankings. He tallied over 1,000 yards and nine TDs, a number I am hoping will climb as Chris Henry, who also racked up nine scores, serves his 10-game suspension. Pairing Housh with Harrison should give me a solid receiving duo.

    Walt's Note: Noooooooooo!!!!!!!

  6. SportsGrumblings.com selects Randy Moss, WR, Patriots
    No comment available.

  7. RotoWorld.com selects Marques Colston, WR, Saints
    No comment available.

  8. FantasyIndex.com selects Plaxico Burress, WR, Giants
Well, the last 3 of the guys I considered true No. 1 fantasy wideouts happened to go in the last 4 picks. Lesson learned; there's no point taking QBs early, because no one else will either. I do like Burress, I just hoped Colston or Housh would make it back to me. Oh well.

  9. RotoTimes.com selects Drew Brees, QB, Saints
    No comment available.

  10. FantasyFootballXtreme.com selects Cadillac Williams, RB, Buccaneers
We were really hoping Colston would fall, but we just can't pass up this kind of value here with Caddy. Yea, he isn't the best #2, but he is certainly a great 3rd RB to slap next to Tomlinson and Thomas Jones.

Walt's Note: I tried to trade for Cadillac Williams to set up a running back-by-committee rotation on my team. However, I was giving up too little, and Fantasy Football Xtreme was asking for too much for my liking. The deal didn't go down.

  11. FantasySportsCentral.com selects Marc Bulger, QB, Rams
    No comment available.

  12. MonsterDraft.com selects Donovan McNabb, QB, Eagles
    No comment available.

Round 5
  1. MonsterDraft.com selects Hines Ward, WR, Steelers
    No comment available.

  2. FantasySportsCentral.com selects Deuce McAllister, RB, Saints
    No comment available.

  3. FantasyFootballXtreme.com selects Michael Turner, RB, Chargers
Well, I can't wait 24 picks to take Turner given that he is climbing up the MFL Draft Tracker. Early or not (and I know we will take heat), I gotta make this move as it can save a season. A lot of these players have similar value right here anyway.

  4. RotoTimes.com selects Reggie Brown, WR, Eagles
    No comment available.

  5. FantasyIndex.com selects Ahman Green, RB, Texans
    No comment available.

  6. RotoWorld.com selects Calvin Johnson, WR, Lions
    No comment available.

  7. SportsGrumblings.com selects Jon Kitna, QB, Lions
    No comment available.

  8. FFJungle.com selects Tony Romo, QB, Cowboys
I struggled with this pick. I really wanted either Brees, Bulger, or Kitna, but they were all picked in front of me. Therefore, I have to make my QB now before I lose one of my last two QB options, especially since I have several other options available in round six. I am selecting Tony Romo over Phillip Rivers based on potential. With Tomlinson established as the top threat in S.D., Rivers' ceiling is just so high. Romo, on the other hand, threw 19 TDs (along with a somewhat alarming 13 INTs) in 10 games last seaon. That is almost two scores and a little over a pick a game. Now that he is the starter and has some experience, I'm gambling he can continue to produce the touchdowns and lower his interceptions a bit. He certainly has the weapons around him to achieve these goals. Romo should produce 3,500 yards and 24-26 touchdowns this year--solid, though not outstanding, numbers.

  9. FantasyFootballWhiz.com selects Chris Chambers, WR, Dolphins
With Chris Chambers being my third wide receiver, I am as happy as a Fantasy owner can be. Many are down on they young man believing that he never lived up to his potential. However, when you have quarterbacks like Jay Fielder, A.J. Feeley, Gus Frerotte and Joey Harrington throwing to you, can really live up to your potential? Nope, you can't.

  10. FFToolbox.com selects Marion Barber, RB, Cowboys
Im amazed to find a RB who scored 14 TD's last year still available at the end of the 5th round! Marion Barber's role in the Cowboys offense should expand with new Head Coach Wade Phillips, and Coordinator Jason Garrett opening up the playbook. Barber is an elite goal-line back who also has great ability catching the ball out of the backfield (23 catches, 196 yards, and 2 TD's in 2006). Barber has the potential to develop into a fantasy stud, and is an excellent #3 RB to pair with Rudi Johnson and Adrian Peterson.

  11. WalterFootball.com selects Jerious Norwood, RB, Falcons
All the guys I was targeting were taken in the past couple of picks, so I have to "settle" for Jerious Norwood, who should see more action this year, given that Warrick Dunn is 32.

Walt's Note: Bah... I was targeting Marion Barber and Tony Romo. I didn't like this pick at the time, but Warrick Dunn's injury could allow me to put Norwood into the starting lineup right away.

  12. JunkyardJake.com selects Jamal Lewis, RB, Browns
Well, not an exciting pick, but Jamal Lewis looks to be the best value here. The Cleveland line should be better this year with Joe Thomas, so maybe Lewis will be a decent #3 RB.

Round 6
  1. JunkyardJake.com selects Braylon Edwards, WR, Browns
Really tough choice, since I didn't want one, let alone two Cleveland Browns on my team. Edwards seems to offer the most intriguing upside of the many good receivers still available.

  2. WalterFootball.com selects Joey Galloway, WR, Buccaneers
Played well with Bruce Gradkowski under center. Galloway will benefit from Jeff Garcia's presence. Great No. 3 fantasy WR in my opinion.

Walt's Note: A pick I actually liked when I was making it... Go figure.

  3. FFToolbox.com selects Darrell Jackson, WR, 49ers
While I'm a bit concerned by Jackson's knee injury he did score 10 TD's last season (3rd among WR's), and will be Alex Smith's first read in San Francisco. If Jackson can stay healthy, he should post solid numbers across the board (because he will be targeted frequently especially in the red zone). A quality #2 WR in my opinion, and a great value pick in the 6th round.

  4. FantasyFootballWhiz.com selects Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Seahawks
Well, it is time to round out my starting group with the likes of Matt Hasselbeck. Some concerns are there about the strength in his non-throwing arm, but that should be corrected by the start training camp and he should enjoy a prolific 2007 over his disappointing 2006. Not to mention that I have him ranked 5th among quarterbacks.

  5. FFJungle.com selects Ravens Defense
Baltimore finished as a top-ten scorer in this scoring system last season. They tallied 20-plus points on nine occasions, including two weeks with over 30 points. There weren't many third receivers, running backs, or starting tight ends that chipped in fantasy points as consistently. The Ravens should be one of the best defenses again this year. Losing Adelius Thomas may hurt, but the Ravens should plug another great player in his place as they have done with previous defections. Baltimore's potential to be a powerful asset makes them a reasonable selection at #65.

  6. SportsGrumblings.com selects Bears Defense
    No comment available.

  7. RotoWorld.com selects Vernon Davis, TE, 49ers
    No comment available.

  8. FantasyIndex.com selects Santana Moss, WR, Redskins
Moss was my 2nd choice a round ago, and I was so worried I'd lose him before this pick I tried to trade up. I view him as -- potentially -- the last of the top-20 wideouts in the draft, and I'm pretty pleased to get him here.

  9. RotoTimes.com selects Mark Clayton, WR, Ravens
    No comment available.

  10. FantasyFootballXtreme.com selects Vince Young, QB, Titans
Great value this late, IMO. Even with a weak WR crew, Young is capable of 10+ rushing TDs and Michael Vick-type rushing yards in 2007. I think the QB will finish inside the top 5-7 for fantasy QBs at week 16's end.

  11. FantasySportsCentral.com selects Laveranues Coles, WR, Jets
    No comment available.

  12. MonsterDraft.com selects Julius Jones, RB, Cowboys
    No comment available.
