2011 Fantasy Football Rankings - Tight Ends (Sept. 5):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-40
-
Antonio Gates, TE, Chargers. Bye: 6.
Fifty catches, 782 yards and 10 touchdowns is a great season for any tight end. Antonio Gates did this in 10 games last year. It's no surprise Gates' touchdown total was so high; LaDainian Tomlinson left for New York, while Vincent Jackson was holding out.
Gates will once again dominate in 2011. You can wait on a tight end because there are so many of them, but Gates is the one guy I would consider drafting early (fourth round in a 12-team league).
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 75 catches. 1,110 yards. 12 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 183.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 258.
-
Jermichael Finley, TE, Packers. Bye: 8.
AUG. 27 UPDATE: There's no doubt that Jermichael Finley is completely healthy. Finley caught four of his five targets for 41 yards and a touchdown against the Colts. I had some concern with Finley coming off an injury, but that's no longer the case.
Jermichael Finley is coming off a knee injury that forced him to miss 11 games in 2010. He should be ready for training camp, assuming there is training camp.
Finley is unbelievably talented, but I'm always bearish about players who recently had knee surgery. There are so many good tight ends that you can afford to wait on one.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 79 catches. 1,010 yards. 8 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 149.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 228.
-
Vernon Davis, TE, 49ers. Bye: 7.
Vernon Davis didn't come close to matching the 13 touchdowns he scored in 2009, but he still put together a solid 2010 campaign, catching 56 balls for 914 yards and seven touchdowns. Davis' production should rise in 2011, as Jim Harbaugh should provide a spark to San Francisco's stagnant offense.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 68 catches. 975 yards. 8 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 145.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 213.
-
Owen Daniels, TE, Texans. Bye: 11.
AUG. 28 UPDATE: Owen Daniels paced the team in targets at San Francisco with eight, catching six balls for 57 yards and a touchdown. Now completely healthy, Daniels is poised for a huge season.
Most of the 2010 season was a waste for Owen Daniels. But not the last four games - he posted 271 yards and two touchdowns in those contests. Can he stay healthy though? Well, the Texans apparently think so because they gave him a 4-year, $22 million contract in March. Daniels is going to be WAY undervalued in your fantasy drafts this summer.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 78 catches. 990 yards. 7 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 141.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 219.
-
Jimmy Graham, TE, Saints. Bye: 11.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: Jimmy Graham received nine targets from Drew Brees in just three drives against the Raiders, catching five balls for 73 yards. He won't normally receive this many targets per possession (Lance Moore was out), but he's a stud. Drew Brees toyed with the Oakland defense, moving his talented tight end around and creating mismatches. Graham could easily finish as a top-three tight end this year. Make sure you get him in your fantasy draft because he's being selected too late.
Jimmy Graham would be an obvious fantasy sleeper if everyone didn't know about him already. The former Miami basketball player hauled in 31 receptions for 356 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie in 2010. With Jeremy Shockey gone, the job is all Graham's. He's going to score a ton of touchdowns in New Orleans' high-octane offense.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 69 catches. 860 yards. 9 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 140.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 209.
-
Jason Witten, TE, Cowboys. Bye: 5.
One player who was not hurt by Tony Romo's injury was Jason Witten. He logged 94 receptions for 1,002 yards and nine touchdowns last season. I don't expect Witten to notch nine scores again (a career-high outlier) but he should once again eclipse the 1,000-yard plateau and provide his PPR owners with a plethora of fantasy points.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 92 catches. 1,010 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 137.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 229.
-
Kellen Winslow Jr., TE, Buccaneers. Bye: 8.
AUG. 28 UPDATE: Kellen Winslow Jr. was leading the Buccaneers in targets (4) when he left the Miami game with an ankle injury. It's reportedly not serious, so Winslow deserves a stock up. He's finally healthy, so he figures to be a big part of Tampa's offense.
AUG. 10 UPDATE: Kellen Winslow has reportedly looked great in training camp. Considering that he's not coming off surgery for the first time in half a decade, that shouldn't be a surprise.
The Buccaneers spent an early pick in the 2011 NFL Draft on tight end Luke Stocker because they don't trust Kellen Winslow Jr. to stay healthy. You can't really blame them, since Winslow has endured six knee surgeries in the past six years. Winslow is healthy for the moment, but that could change pretty quickly.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 76 catches. 880 yards. 7 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 130.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 206.
-
Dallas Clark, TE, Colts. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 8 UPDATE: Yet another downgrade for Dallas Clark because Peyton Manning could have a third neck surgery soon.
SEPT. 5 UPDATE: It sounds like Peyton Manning could be out 4-5 games. Downgrade.
AUG. 25 UPDATE: Indianapolis signed Kerry Collins, and Adam Schefter later reported that the Colts don't believe Peyton Manning will be ready for the opener. Dallas Clark's numbers obviously have to drop a bit.
AUG. 8 UPDATE: Doing some housekeeping here. About a week ago, I decreased Peyton Manning's stats just a bit because of his neck injury. Dallas Clark's numbers have to drop just a bit too.
Dallas Clark went berserk two years ago, catching 100 passes for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns. He scored thrice in five full games in 2010 before suffering a season-ending wrist injury. There's no reason Clark can't revert back to 2009 form.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 72 catches. 810 yards. 7 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 123.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 195.
-
Rob Gronkowski, TE, Patriots. Bye: 7.
AUG. 28 UPDATE: Rob Gronkowski saw just two targets and caught only one ball against the Lions. Gronkowski will continue to serve as a red-zone weapon, but Aaron Hernandez will continue to steal receptions.
Rob Gronkowski had just one reception in five of his first seven games, but really gained momentum after that. He ultimately became Tom Brady's primary end zone target, finishing with 10 touchdowns. I see no reason why he can't notch double-digit scores once again.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 55 catches. 700 yards. 8 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 118.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 173.
-
Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Lions. Bye: 9.
I didn't like Brandon Pettigrew last year because he was coming off a torn ACL. Whoops. Pettigrew had a great second season, catching 71 balls for 722 yards and four touchdowns. If Matthew Stafford can stay healthy - I know, a big if - Pettigrew could have a monstrous 2011 fantasy campaign.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 71 catches. 760 yards. 7 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 118.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 189.

A big reason why John Carlson's numbers were down last year was because the Seahawks lost their FB, Michael Robinson, for around a third of the season. Since they didn't have a backup FB on the roster, they were forced to put Carlson in at the FB spot during a lot of plays where he would otherwise act as a receiving TE. Assuming they have a healthy FB next year, I expect his numbers to jump up a bit at least to what they were in 2008.
