2016 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of July 18

July 25

Devontae Booker, RB, Broncos
Devontae Booker flashed as a receiver in OTAs, per Jeff Legwold, ESPN. It sounds like Booker should be able to lock up third-down duties pretty quickly. He’s a legitimate sleeper, especially given C.J. Anderson’s habit of beginning seasons slowly.

Josh Gordon, WR, Browns
Josh Gordon will be reinstated in the NFL after he serves a four-game suspension. Gordon should consider himself lucky, and hopefully he stays out of trouble going forward. Gordon is one of the more talented receivers in the NFL and could post WR1-type numbers beginning in Week 5. Since he’ll miss the first four games, however, he should be drafted as a low-end WR2, high WR3.

Dennis Pitta, TE, Ravens
Dennis Pitta has avoided the active/PUP list. This is quite the surprise, given what Pitta has been through. Though the injuries might have sapped Pitta’s talent, he’ll at least have an opportunity to claim playing time. I wouldn’t recommend him for fantasy, but he’s worth monitoring at least.

July 24

Victor Cruz, WR, Giants
While the Giants are optimistic about Victor Cruz, they should buy it at their own risk, according to Ralph Vacchiano, New York Daily News. We heard the same optimism last offseason. Players seldom come back from patellar tendons. Don’t count on him doing anything.

Steve Smith, WR, Ravens
Steve Smith has opened on the active/PUP list. While Smith can come off any time, it’s a reminder that he’s a 37-year-old who sustained a torn Achilles in November. He shouldn’t be counted on to be a big contributor.

July 23

Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Cowboys
Ezekiel Elliott has been accused as domestic violence. Elliott claims to have evidence proving that the woman in question is trying to set him up, and the 9-1-1 call doesn’t sound all too convincing. This probably won’t affect Elliott’s status at all, but I thought I’d at least mention it.

DeAndre Washington, RB, Raiders
The Raiders are hoping DeAndre Washington finds a role in training camp. The coaching staff has expressed frustration with Latavius Murray, so it’s possible that the fifth-round rookie could eventually be the team’s starter.

July 22

Le’Veon Bell, RB, Steelers
Le’Veon Bell has been suspended for four games for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. Again. If there’s a silver lining, it’ll allow Bell to have more time to return from his torn PCL and MCL, but he’s now a late-first, early-seconder instead of a top-three selection.

Josh Gordon, WR, Browns
Josh Gordon met with Roger Goodell this week to discuss his possible return to the NFL. Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer wrote that this wouldn’t have happened if Gordon didn’t have a legitimate chance to be reinstated. We’ll find out Gordon’s fate on Aug. 1, but it sounds promising for now.

Adrian Peterson, RB, Vikings
The Vikings want to run more shotgun formations in 2016, which could hurt Adrian Peterson, according to Matt Vensel, Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Peterson averaged less than two yards per carry out of the shotgun last year, and has never done well in that formation throughout his career. Clearly on the decline, Peterson is someone to shy away from this season.

DeAngelo Williams, RB, Steelers
DeAngelo Williams gets an obvious stock up in the wake of the Le’Veon Bell suspension. However, I don’t think Williams is a slam-dunk fantasy pick. Williams turned 33 this offseason, so he’s bound to regress and may not be the same player he was last year. Plus, he’ll have two extremely difficult matchups in the first four weeks (Bengals, Chiefs).

July 21

Brandin Cooks, WR, Saints
Brandin Cooks “looks ready to explode,” according to beat writer Mike Triplett. Cooks eclipsed the 100-yard barrier in three of his final five games this past season, so it would make sense to believe that Cooks’ production will continue to increase.

Will Fuller, WR, Texans
Will Fuller likely won’t be in the opening lineup come Week 1, per ESPN. Fuller may eventually claim a starting job, but Jaelen Strong has been more impressive this offseason.

Jeff Janis, WR, Packers
The Packers have downgraded Jeff Janis because of “straight-line athleticism, tendency to body catch and average ability to adjust,” according to Bob McGinn, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. So much for one of my top sleepers. Janis was dynamic in the team’s loss to Arizona in the playoffs, but it appears as though the coaching staff is less optimistic.

Ryan Mathews, RB, Chargers
Ryan Mathews is not a good fit for Doug Pederson’s offense, per Jimmy Kempski, Philly Voice. Kempski writes that Pederson wants to move his running backs around to create mismatches in the passing game. Mathews doesn’t do that well, so he should be downgraded.

Kevin White, WR, Bears
Kevin White has been very impressive at training camp, according to ESPN reports. White has been putting on a show, apparently, and seems to be the real deal. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of in-game chemistry he’ll have with Jay Cutler in the preseason.

July 20

Josh Gordon, WR, Browns
The Browns could welcome back Josh Gordon if he’s reinstated in early August. We’ll see if Gordon can stay out of trouble for once. He’ll have a better chance if he stops hanging out with alcoholic losers. Gordon would almost instantly emerge as a WR2, albeit with some risk, if he’s welcomed back.

T.J. Jones, WR, Lions
T.J. Jones is reportedly in the lead for the third receiver job in Detroit. In fact, beat writer Tim Twentyman wrote to “watch out” for Jones this year. Jones is definitely a late-round sleeper, as the Lions will have to throw often this year.

Donte Moncrief, WR, Colts
Beat writer Mike Wells believes that Donte Moncrief will lead the Colts in receptions this year. That could happen, as Moncrief was close to T.Y. Hilton in targets last year. Moncrief is definitely worth drafting at his current 6.10 price tag.

July 19

Jay Ajayi, RB, Dolphins
Jay Ajayi wasn’t going to be the starting running back on the Dolphins for very long because he’s a poor fit for Adam Gase’s offense. The Arian Foster signing hurts those in the know, unfortunately, given that clueless drafts won’t be selecting Ajayi in the fifth round now.

Kenyan Drake, RB, Dolphins
I still like Kenyan Drake as a Fantasy Football Sleeper, though he’ll now have to wait to be the starter. Still, Drake will be in the opening lineup at some point because of Arian Foster’s poor durability.

Arian Foster, RB, Dolphins
The Dolphins have signed Arian Foster. The former Texan will be the starter to open up the season, but there’s no reason to think that he’ll more durable in his new home. It would be nice if someone in Miami slipped some meat into Foster’s meals; otherwise, there’s no hope.

David Johnson, RB, Cardinals
Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com is reporting that David Johnson is the unquestionable starter for the Cardinals this season. There was a report earlier in the summer that Chris Johnson would be given the job, but that has proven to be false story, which is what many thought was the case at the time.

July 18

Arian Foster, RB, TBA
The Dolphins are expected to consider signing Arian Foster if he shows well in tryouts on Monday. The Dolphins are desperate for a running back, as the favorite for the gig is third-round rookie Kenyan Drake. Foster would be a temporary upgrade until he sustains yet another injury.

Tim Hightower, RB, Saints
Tim Hightower is the favorite to be Mark Ingram’s backup. What about C.J. Spiller? Well, according to Nick Underhill of the New Orleans Advocate, Spiller is actually on the roster bubble. I wouldn’t draft Tim Hightower until extremely late, but he’s worth monitoring on the waiver wire.

C.J. Spiller, RB, Saints
C.J. Spiller is on the roster bubble, according to Nick Underhill of the New Orleans Advocate. This can’t be a shock to anyone. Spiller is undraftable in all leagues.
