How does that nullify anything? Really fast arpeggios take technique, but don't make a good band. Metallica has the whole package that's why they're in this discussion.
Since I already explained why I disagree why don't you explain why they are better song writers?

Well the more I think about it, the more I think it is too hard to say, which is why I am quoting SPF. The Beatles have more good songs (pretty much all of their songs, which is why I side with them), and could have written many more if not for certain circumstances (and lots of their songs are different and include other influences, listen to Sgt. Peppers). But on the other hand Metallica's songs are definitely harder to write. That probably wasn't a very good answer, and now I'm confused. I can't explain it right now.

I'm surprised no one has brought up Led Zeppelin
Probably would have been a better comparison, but you said Metallica is the best band, and the Beatles came up because Leo Fender thinks The Beatles are the best, and then it just went from there. You could certainly argue any of the three.
Off the top of my head I can think of songs Metallica has written in the keys of E, F#, G, A, B, C, D, and their favorite is E minor (probably more, but once again that's off the top of my head). That's a lot for any band, and more than the Beatles wrote in to my knowledge.
If you don't think Metallica harmonizes then I can't believe you've ever heard them in all honesty because that's just to absurd to even address.
Who cares if all 4 Beatles sang songs? That doesn't make them a better band. That's like saying Yves Carbonne is a better bassist than Jaco Passtorious or Les Claypool, Flea - whoever - just because he uses a 12 string bass.
After reading this I went looked at the tabs at their middle latest stuff and you're 100 percent correct on keys. I remember mostly then in E, A and Bm from their first 2 albums.
As for the harmonies, their songs are mostly one voice without backing vocals. Yes, I've heard them and no their not my favourite band. I respect their work immensely, but they were so highly over-hyped, I never fully got into them.
