Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers
Line: Lakers by 7.

The more desperate team continues to win each game in this series. The more desperate team tonight is the Celtics because they lost Kendrick Perkins. Speaking of which, I found it unbelivably ridiculous that everyone on Around the Horn, particularly Bill Plaschke opined that Boston had “no chance” because Perkins is out. Excuse me? When did Perkins become the second coming of Bill Russell? He’s been solid inside, but he’s not nearly as important as Rajon Rondo or Paul Pierce. If either of them were out, Boston wouldn’t have a chance.

The Celtics could easily win this game. They’ve beaten the Lakers in three of their previous four matchups. They won Game 2 in Los Angeles. Why can’t they win Game 7? And don’t tell me because of Los Angeles’ experience, because neither Phil Jackson nor Kobe Bryant has ever coached/played in an NBA Finals Game 7.

I think the Lakers win tonight, but it should be a close one. Seven points is way too much for these evenly matched teams.

NBA Pick: Celtics +7 (1 Unit) — Correct; +$100

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers
Line: Lakers by 6.5.

The more desperate team has won every game in this series. The Lakers fit that description now. With about 65 percent of the money on Boston, I’m taking the host to force a Game 7.

NBA Pick: Lakers -6.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Sunday, June 13, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics
Line: Celtics by 3.

I’m pretty confident the Lakers are going to win the next two games. They didn’t try too hard in Game 4, but they know they have to win this one.

NBA Pick: Lakers +3 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Thursday, June 10, 2010 (1-0, +$50)

Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics
Line: Celtics by 3.5.

I like the Lakers to win Game 5 no matter what happens here, but I’m not really sure who wins tonight. What I can do is look at history. In the two situations I mentioned Tuesday where the Lakers split their first two home games and won Game 3, they lost their next contest by 12 and 19 points. Having said that, the Lakers are the better team and could easily win this one.

NBA Pick: Celtics -3.5 (0.5 Units) — Correct; +$50

Tuesday, June 8, 2010 (1-0, +$100)

Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics
Line: Celtics by 2.5.

I know a fixed game when I see one, and Game 2 of the Lakers-Celtics final was unquestionably fixed. Kobe Bryant sits on the bench for the entire third quarter, and every single call in the fourth quarter goes Boston’s way? More than 70 percent of the action in Vegas was on the Lakers moneyline, so someone paid the officials a good amount of cash to make sure Boston won. David Stern should be embarrassed.

The only way the Celtics win this one is if this game is rigged as well. If everything’s clean, the Lakers should triumph. It’s worth noting that the Lakers are 2-0 the past two times they split two contests at home and then had to go on the road for Game 3.

NBA Pick: Lakers +2.5 (1 Unit) — Correct; +$100

Sunday, June 6, 2010 (0-1, -$110)

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers
Line: Lakers by 6.

Pretty much the same analysis… Kobe Bryant’s covering Rajon Rondo; Ron Artest is shutting down Paul Pierce; and Pau Gasol is debacling Kevin Garnett. I don’t see how the Celtics can score in the 90s.

NBA Pick: Lakers -6 (1 Unit) — Incorrect; -$110

Thursday, June 3, 2010 (1-0, +$50)

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers
Line: Lakers by 5.5.

Not sure how this series is going to play out, but I do have concerns about Boston’s offense. I don’t know how they’re going to score. With Kobe Bryant on Rajon Rondo and Ron Artest on Paul Pierce, the Celtics may struggle to get into the 90s.

NBA Pick: Lakers -5.5 (0.5 Units) — Correct; +$50

Saturday, May 29, 2010 (1-0, +$50)

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns
Line: Suns by 2.

I really don’t like the way the Suns closed out Game 5. Their comeback was amazing, but they lost at the very last second and now have to be emotionally drained because they should have won on Thursday. I don’t know if they’ll be able to muster the same energy tonight.

NBA Pick: Lakers +2 (0.5 Units) — Correct; +$50

Friday, May 28, 2010 (0-1, -$55)

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics
Line: Celtics by 3.5.

Thanks for blowing that 18-point lead, Lakers. I’m getting slaughtered in these conference finals games.

It seems like the Magic have regained all the momentum in this series. I think they’ll pull off the improbable.

NBA Pick: Magic +3.5 (0.5 Units) — Incorrect; -$55

Thursday, May 27, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers
Line: Lakers by 7.5.

I thought the Lakers would win a game in Phoenix, but I was wrong. This seems like it’s a classic home-court domination series. I think Phil Jackson will solve the Les Suns’ zone.

NBA Pick: Lakers -7.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic
Line: Magic by 3.5.

After the Celtics blew the Magic out in Game 3, they didn’t take Orlando seriously on Monday night. They’re still the better team.

NBA Pick: Celtics +3.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns
Line: Lakers by 1.5.

I can’t believe the Magic won last night. Where did that come from? Anyway, I figured the Lakers would win one of these two games in Phoenix.

NBA Pick: Lakers -1.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Monday, May 24, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics
Line: Celtics by 7.

Wow, this line is really high compared to the Game 3 number. But I still like Boston – Orlando looks done to me.

NBA Pick: Celtics -7 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Sunday, May 23, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns
Line: Suns by 2.5.

The Les Suns MAY win one of these games in Phoenix, but I think there’s a better chance the Lakers sweep. They’re just the much better team, and Phoenix simply can’t do anything defensively against them.

NBA Pick: Lakers +2.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Saturday, May 22, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics
Line: Celtics by 3.5.

Orlando absolutely had to have Game 2, yet it came up short. This is just a situation where one team matches up really well against the other.

NBA Pick: Celtics -3.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Wednesday, May 19, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers
Line: Lakers by 7.

I can’t believe the Magic would just bulldoze through the first two rounds without any sort of challenge and just fall flat on their face like this. Game 2 was much more telling than Game 1; last night was a must-win and they couldn’t come through. It looks like Boston will sweep this series.

I was wrong about the Les Suns as well. Maybe their sweep of San Antonio was a mirage.

NBA Pick: Lakers -7 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Tuesday, May 18, 2010 (0-1, -$330)

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic
Line: Magic by 7.

I feel really strongly about this game. Everyone just watched Boston dominate for three quarters. On Around the Horn, Michael Smith insulted Dwight Howard. On PTI, Michael Wilbon predicted that Boston would win this contest. In Vegas, 80 percent of the action is on the Celtics. Yet, despite all of this, Orlando is favored by more in this contest than it was in Game 1. I can’t see this being anything but a Magic blowout.

NBA Pick: Magic -7 (3 Units) — Incorrect; -$330

Monday, May 17, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers
Line: Lakers by 6.

I feel like Phoenix’s sweep over San Antonio was more impressive than the Lakers’ sweep over the Jazz. The Lakers always beat Utah; but Phoenix was finally able to overcome San Antonio. I think the Les Suns take one in Los Angeles.

NBA Pick: Suns +6 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Sunday, May 16, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic
Line: Magic by 6.5.

I don’t know if the Celtics are a good team. They beat a terrible Heat squad and then managed to knock off Zombie LeBron. The Magic, meanwhile, are 14-0 straight up and 13-1 against the spread since April 4. In their past 31 games, Orlando is 28-3 straight up (wow) and 23-7-1 against the spread. The Magic have continuously been undervalued in this postseason.

NBA Pick: Magic -6.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Thursday, May 13, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Cleveland Cavaliers at Boston Celtics
Line: Celtics by 1.5.

Great call by Matt, who joked that like in the movie Celtic Pride LeBron James must have been drugged by two Celtics fans before Game 5, which would explain his poor play. I just can’t see LeBron laying down two games in a row. With everyone calling him a paper MVP, he now has a lot to prove. I say Cleveland wins in Boston tonight.

NBA Pick: Cavaliers +1.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Tuesday, May 11, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers
Line: Cavaliers by 7.5.

This lazy Cavs team plays only when they want to play – as we all saw in the huge disparity in effort between Games 2 and 3. Coming off a loss, they should be motivated.

NBA Pick: Cavaliers -7.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Monday, May 10, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks
Line: Magic by 5.5.

It’s tough to close a team out on the road, but the Hawks are done. Winning this series will mean beating the Magic four times in a row, including twice in Orlando, where they’ve lost by double digits in every meeting there this year. I think Atlanta will put up a fight early on, but will ultimately lose by 9-12 points.

NBA Pick: Magic -5.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Sunday, May 9, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Cleveland Cavaliers at Boston Celtics
Line: Cavaliers by 2.

I’ve really grown to dislike this Cavs team. They only play hard when they want to, and coming off a huge win in Boston, I don’t think we’ll get maximum effort from them in Game 4. With about 80 percent of the action on Cleveland, let’s go with the Celtics.

NBA Pick: Celtics +2 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Saturday, May 8, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks
Line: Magic by 2.5.

The Magic have beaten the Hawks in a blowout and in a close game. I don’t think Atlanta’s going to put together a single win this series; the talent disparity is just too great.

NBA Pick: Magic -2.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Friday, May 7, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs
Line: Spurs by 6.5.

The Le Suns or La Suns, or whatever they call themselves now, are fat and happy, up 2-0 in this series. This is desperation time for the Spurs. If they lose this game, the series is over.

NBA Pick: Spurs -6.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Thursday, May 6, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Atlanta Hawks at Orlando Magic
Line: Magic by 9.5.

When the Hawks were losing by 40-plus in the second half, the players and coaches on the bench didn’t seem pissed. Instead, they hung their heads, stared at the floor and looked completely defeated. They know they can’t beat the Magic. I say this series is already over.

NBA Pick: Magic -9.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

San Antonio Spurs at Phoenix Suns
Line: Suns by 3.

I went into this series thinking the Spurs were going to win one of these two games in Phoenix, but wanted to see what happened on Monday. I still say San Antonio wins one.

NBA Pick: Spurs +3 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Tuesday, May 4, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers
Line: Lakers by 5.5.

The Lakers led by double digits for most of Sunday’s game, but fell apart in the fourth quarter. They were still able to beat the Jazz at home, as they always do. I’ll be surprised if they don’t win Game 2.

NBA Pick: Lakers -5.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Monday, May 3, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers
Line: Cavaliers by 6.

The Cavs won and covered Game 1, but are favored by a point less than they were two days ago? How does that make any sense? The betting action is even, so it’s not like there’s any trickery going on here.

NBA Pick: Cavaliers -6 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Sunday, May 2, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers
Line: Lakers by 7.

The Jazz have a mental block with the Lakers. They’ve played them twice in the postseason the past two years, and here’s how much they lost by each time they visited L.A.: 13, 10, 11, 11, 10 and 7.

NBA Pick: Lakers -7 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Saturday, May 1, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers
Line: Cavaliers by 7.

The only concern here is LeBron’s elbow. If he’s OK, the Cavs win this series in four or five.

NBA Pick: Cavaliers -7 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Friday, April 30, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Denver Nuggets at Utah Jazz
Line: Jazz by 6.

In a desperation Game 5, the Nuggets weren’t able to separate from the Jazz until really late. With that in mind, I can’t see Denver winning this game; Utah is much better at home and knows what it has to win this game to prevent a Game 7 in Denver.

NBA Pick: Jazz -6 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Thursday, April 29, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs
Line: Spurs by 4.5.

I was wrong about this series from the beginning; Dallas had dominated this rivalry going into the playoffs, but the Spurs apparently made the proper adjustments to finally beat their in-state nemesis. The two games in San Antonio haven’t been close despite what the scores say, so I like the Spurs to close this series out here.

By the way, I discovered two cool trends today. The last 21 times the Spurs lost by 20 or more and then played a game at home, they’re 16-5 ATS. This year, the Spurs are 7-3 ATS at home following a road loss.

NBA Pick: Spurs -4.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Wednesday, April 28, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets
Line: Nuggets by 7.

Though the Jazz won Game 2, they’re historically not very good on the road in the playoffs. Denver is in desperation mode here; I think they win this game before going down in six.

NBA Pick: Nuggets -7 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Tuesday, April 27, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers
Line: Cavaliers by 12.5.

This may surprise you because I’ve been taking the Cavaliers this entire series, but I like the Bulls tonight. On two occasions in LeBron James’ career has he been up 3-1 in a series with a fifth game at home. He’s 0-2 against the spread in those Game 5 situations. Chicago has nothing to lose right now, and closing a team out is always a difficult task.

NBA Pick: Bulls +12.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Monday, April 26, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Orlando Magic at Charlotte Bobcats
Line: Magic by 4.

The Bobcats put 110 percent into Game 3 and it looked like Orlando wasn’t trying too hard. In the end though, Orlando won. I think Charlotte’s done.

NBA Pick: Magic -4 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Saturday, April 24, 2010 (1-0, +$300)

Cleveland Cavaliers at Chicago Bulls
Line: Cavaliers by 5.5.

I was doing so well in the regular season, but I’m sucking in the playoffs. If I keep losing, I may just walk away from the NBA with plus units.

NBA Pick: Cavaliers -5.5 (3 Units) — Correct; +$300

Friday, April 23, 2010 (0-2, -$440)

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat
Line: Heat by 4.

How did the Cavs lose to the Bulls? How embarrassing. Maybe that’ll be the wake-up call they need.

This is desperation time for Miami. I think they beat the Celtics tonight, who are fat and happy with their 2-0 series lead.

NBA Pick: Heat -4 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs
Line: Spurs by 3.5.

I still say the Mavericks own the Spurs, having won nine of the past 12 meetings.

NBA Pick: Mavericks +3.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Thursday, April 22, 2010 (0-1, -$330)

Cleveland Cavaliers at Chicago Bulls
Line: Cavaliers by 4.

If you haven’t figured it out, I’m betting on the Cavaliers in every game this series. The talent disparity is just too great.

NBA Pick: Cavaliers -4 (3 Units) — Incorrect; -$330

Wednesday, April 21, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks
Line: Mavericks by 3.5.

The Mavericks have now won nine of the past 11 meetings against the Spurs. It’s complete ownage.

NBA Pick: Mavericks -3.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Tuesday, April 20, 2010 (1-0, +$300)

Portland Blazers at Phoenix Suns
Line: Suns by 8.5.

Three units down the drain because the Cavaliers missed the cover by half a point. Blows. Anyway, I love Phoenix here; I expect a Suns blowout after they lost Game 1.

NBA Pick: Suns -8.5 (3 Units) — Correct; +$300

Monday, April 19, 2010 (0-2, -$550)

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers
Line: Cavaliers by 10.5.

My Monday picks will be the same as my Saturday picks, so might as well use the same analysis. I made a living betting on the Cavs in the first two rounds of last year’s NBA Playoffs. I’m going to do the same thing here. The talent disparity is just too much.

NBA Pick: Cavaliers -10.5 (3 Units) — Incorrect; -$330

Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets
Line: Nuggets by 6.5.

Andrei Kirilenko is out for the Jazz, who are usually pretty inept in road playoff games.

NBA Pick: Nuggets -6.5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Sunday, April 18, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks
Line: Mavericks by 4.5.

What an awful first-round matchup for the Spurs. They’re a good team, but the Mavericks own them. Dallas has taken eight of the past 10 meetings between these two teams, including a 4-1 playoff series victory last year.

NBA Pick: Mavericks -4.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Saturday, April 17, 2010 (2-0, +$500)

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers
Line: Cavaliers by 11.

I made a living betting on the Cavs in the first two rounds of last year’s NBA Playoffs. I’m going to do the same thing here. The talent disparity is just too much.

NBA Pick: Cavaliers -11 (3 Units) — Correct; +$300

Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets

Wednesday, April 14, 2010 (1-1, -$30)

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks
Line: Mavericks by 6.5.

The Spurs are a hot team getting a lot of points. The public has taken note and is pounding them like there’s no tomorrow. I like Dallas here.

NBA Pick: Mavericks -6.5 (3 Units) — Correct; +$300

Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz
Line: Jazz by 6.

Same situation as the one above. The Jazz are great at home and should be able to cover.

NBA Pick: Jazz -6 (3 Units) — Incorrect; -$330

Tuesday, April 13, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls
Line: Bulls by 5.

The Bulls are heavily favored here because they need a win and the Celtics don’t. This has “choke job” written all over it.

NBA Pick: Celtics +5 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Monday, April 12, 2010 (1-1, -$130)

Washington Bullets at New York Knicks
Line: Knicks by 3.5.

The Bullets just played their hearts out against the Hawks. It was tight game throughout, but they fell short in the fourth quarter. I don’t know how they’ll get up for the Knicks.

NBA Pick: Knicks -3.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Minnesota Timberwolves at San Antonio Spurs
Line: Spurs by 14.

This is Minnesota’s final game of the season. Not literally, but their next contest against Detroit doesn’t mean anything. The Timberwolves hate the Spurs with a passion, so this is their Super Bowl. They really want to beat San Antonio. The Spurs, meanwhile, are a really tired team (fifth game in seven days), and are coming off a very big win at Denver. I don’t think they’ll be anywhere near 100 percent against this motivated Minnesota squad.

NBA Pick: Timberwolves +14 (3 Units) — Incorrect; -$330

Sunday, April 11, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Chicago Bulls at Toronto Raptors
Line: Bulls by 2.5.

The Raptors really put a ton of effort into their last game against the Hawks. They led by 11 after one, but just couldn’t sustain the lead. Toronto is running on fumes, and I just don’t know how they can muster the energy to get up for Chicago – even in a must-win game.

NBA Pick: Bulls -2.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Friday, April 9, 2010 (1-0, +$300)

Phoenix Suns at Oklahoma City Thunder
Line: Thunder by 4.

The Suns are hot, while the Thunder have just dropped two important games. Yet, the latter is favored by four points. I like Oklahoma City here; this game means nothing to a Phoenix team that just beat the Spurs. The Thunder have more to prove.

NBA Pick: Thunder -4 (3 Units) — Correct; +$300

Wednesday, April 7, 2010 (1-0, +$300)

San Antonio Spurs at Phoenix Suns
Line: Suns by 6.5.

The Spurs have been winning all of these games and everyone is talking about them as the No. 2 team in the West. Yet, they’re big underdogs at Phoenix with lots of money being bet on them. Publicly backed underdogs don’t cover often. I like the Suns a lot here – I feel like they have something to prove.

NBA Pick: Suns -6.5 (3 Units) — Correct; +$300

Tuesday, April 6, 2010 (1-1, -$20)

Detroit Pistons at Philadelphia 76ers
Line: 76ers by 4.

Detroit just lost a tough game against the Hawks. They seem interested in losing as many games as possible to secure a top-two pick, so I don’t think they’ll get up for the Suxers.

NBA Pick: 76ers -4 (2 Units) — Incorrect; -$220

Houston Rockets at Memphis Grizzlies
Line: Grizzlies by 4.5.

The Grizzlies played a tough game against the Magic. Orlando won by 15, but it was close until the very end. Bringing everything against Houston will be a challenge.

NBA Pick: Rockets +4.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Sunday, April 4, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

New York Knicks at Los Angeles Clippers
Line: Clippers by 1.

The Clippers just suffered a heart-breaking loss to the Nuggets – a game in which they were huge underdogs but led at halftime. I can’t see them getting up for the Knicks.

NBA Pick: Knicks +1 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Saturday, April 3, 2010 (1-0, +$200)

Oklahoma City Thunder at Dallas Mavericks
Line: Mavericks by 3.5.

The Mavericks just lost a tough game to the Magic. It’ll be tough for them to get up for this great Thunder squad.

NBA Pick: Thunder +3.5 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200

Friday, April 2, 2010 (0-2, -$550)

Milwaukee Bucks at Charlotte Bobcats
Line: Bobcats by 3.5.

The Bucks just suffered a heart-breaking loss to the Cavaliers and should be flat here against the irrelevant Bobcats.

NBA Pick: Bobcats -3.5 (3 Units) — Incorrect; -$330

New Orleans Hornets at Memphis Grizzlies
Line: Grizzlies by 3.5.

The Grizzlies had a tough game against the Mavericks, but came up just a bit short. I don’t think they’ll get up for New Orleans.

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 (0-1, -$220)

Sacramento Kings at Minnesota Timberwolves
