2009 NBA Mock Re-Draft
Updated: May 22, 2013.
Team needs and outstanding trades have been taken into account with this mock draft.
-
Cleveland Cavaliers: Otto Porter, SF, Georgetown, 6-8, Soph.
I don't get the fascination with handing Nerlens Noel the No. 1 spot. Does Cleveland need another offensively challenged frontcourt player? No. They Cavaliers are lacking a true small forward and Otto Porter would be the perfect fit here. His all-around ability would be a terrific young piece to add to the talented young backcourt of Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters. The only scenario I could see Cleveland taking Noel is if the team is ready to trade Anderson Varejao - which is a possible scenario. -
Orlando Magic: Nerlens Noel, PF, Kentucky, 7-0, Fr.
The re-building Magic could use improved talent all across the board and adding an athletic shot blocker like Noel would be a nice piece to add alongside the promising Nikola Vucevic. If Noel does go No. 1, look for Orlando to target Trey Burke or Ben McLemore. -
Washington Wizards: Anthony Bennett, PF, UNLV, 6-8, Fr.
With their backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal set for the foreseeable future, the Wizards pass on Burke and McLemore, and turn their attention to Anthony Bennett who would provide a needed spark at power forward. If Cleveland ends up picking Noel, Porter won't fall past this pick. -
Charlotte Hornets: Ben McLemore, SG, Kansas, 6-5, Fr.
Neither Ben Gordon nor Gerald Henderson appear to be the long-term answer at shooting guard for the Hornets, so Ben McLemore gives the team a needed scorer and shooter on the wing to go alongside Kemba Walker and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. -
Phoenix Suns: Victor Oladipo, SG, Indiana, 6-4, Jr.
The Suns sorely need and upgrade of talent on the wing and should target someone like Ben McLemore or Victor Oladipo. With McLemore off the board at this point, Victor Oladipo is the selection. -
New Orleans Pelicans: Trey Burke, PG, Michigan, 6-1, Soph.
Greivis Vasquez had a breakout season for the Hornets, but Trey Burke played himself into a top pick in the 2013 NBA Draft during the NCAA Tournament and is the best option here for the young Pelicans.
Sacramento Kings: Alex Len, C, Maryland, 7-1, Soph.
The Kings are in a "best available player" position and Alex Len is a skilled seven-footer with a lot of potential. A small forward like Shabazz Muhammad would also be an option.-
Detroit Pistons: Shabazz Muhammad, G/F, UCLA, 6-6, Fr.
With a young frontcourt of Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond intact, the Pistons should focus on improving their wing play. Shabazz Muhammad is dropping on big boards and fits a need, but Detroit might be better served selecting a big like Alex Len to build depth up front. -
Minnesota Timberwolves: C.J. McCollum, SG, Lehigh, 6-3, Sr.
The Timberwolves have been searching for a true a shooting guard, but could also use some depth at center since Nikola Pekovic is a restricted free agent. McCollum missed a good chunk of this past season due to injury and is a bit undersized, but can score the basketball. -
Portland Trail Blazers: Dario Saric, F, Croatia, 6-10, 1994
The Trail Blazers need depth all across the board, and Dario Saric is a prototypical, versatile European prospect with great fundamentals for his size. He could provide Portland with a versatile scoring option off the bench. -
Philadelphia 76ers: Cody Zeller, C, Indiana, 7-0, So.
Though I think Zeller is a massively overrated NBA prospect due to a lack of physicality, the 76ers could use some size inside. Another option for Philadelphia would be adding depth on the wing. -
Oklahoma City Thunder: Rudy Gobert, C, France, 7-2, 1992
This is a luxury pick for the Thunder, so the team can take a chance on an athletic big with a huge wingspan (7-9) and allow him time to develop.
Oklahoma City owns the Raptors' pick (via the Houston/Kyle Lowry) from the James Harden trade. Go here to see all of the outstanding 2013 NBA Draft Trades. -
Dallas Mavericks: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG, Georgia, 6-5, Soph.
With O.J. Mayo already saying he will opt out of his contract, the Mavericks need a shooting guard. A point guard could also be an option since since Darren Collison is a restricted free agent. -
Utah Jazz: Michael Carter-Williams, PG, Syracuse, 6-6, Soph.
With no point guard under contract for next season, the Jazz will likely use one of its first round picks on a floor general. Michael Carter-Williams is one of the top pure point guards in college basketball. -
Milwaukee Bucks: Allen Crabbe, SG, California, 6-6, Jr.
The Bucks will be looking for backcourt depth, specifically at shooting guard, since Monta Ellis has a player option on the final year of his deal and J.J. Redick is an unrestricted free agent.

Those who are saying the Cavs could trade down to 4 or 5 and get him, you're out of your minds. Le Wizerables would shank everyone in the building to get him at 3. The biggest need on the roster is a long term SF followed by a young big (6'7" Bennett doesn't fit either role).
A trio of Wall/Beal/Porter would simply need two solid rebounders/rim protectors to be a perrenial playoff team.

First of all, Jamaal Franklin will be gone no later than 22. I've seen him as high as 18 at this point, he is killing the workouts. But as far as this mock goes, no way in hell does he make it past both the Nuggets and the Spurs.
The Nets and Hawks would also take long looks at him, and the Grizzlies would love to have him, but unfortunately don't have the pick.

@jason if Cavs trade back won't be able to get Porter. Wizards would run up to the Podium if he fell to them

I can only see Lebron returning to Cleveland, if Miami does not win the championship again. if they win again, he stays in Miami.

The no.1 pick could be anyone at this point. While Porter looks like the favorite since they need a SF. However there is speculation that Lebron ops out after next year and makes his triumphent return to Cleveland so this could be anyone at this point. They like Waiters at SG and Irving is a all star PG. Thomphson is the PF and Zeller is the C. The most likely scenario is a trade right now. If they are confident Lebron wants to return then they should ship this pick away to acquire a couple 1st rounders and build depth. Someone will fall in love and will be willing to deal players or multiple picks to move up.

It's not about where Noels is now. It's about where he is going to be 2-3 years from now. He has the highest ceiling of the top players in this draft. The Cavs can get a SF with there 2nd 1st round draft pick.

As usual Walters inability to work at his trade or just to copy someone else's mock in the NFL shows up here as well in the NBA. Muhammad is a head case. he wont play defense he isnt fast or quick enough or care enough to learn it. He is a one demensional player a jump shooter. He says he is a scorer but is he really at UCLA he averaged less then 17 points a game and his shooting percentage was trash. If Dumars picks him he should be fired...he will be anyway but sooner then later..Their isnt alot of talent but their are some players still on Walters board that if he knew anything about them or the team he would put them in the right spot. McCollum, Pope, adn Crabbe are much better players and prospects then Muhammad.

No way Franklin falls all the way to 29. As a Thunder fan i would love that but Franklin is a for sure top 20 pick. People might think he is a reach at 12 but I would consider taking him there if I was the Thunder. At 29 I would go Glen Rice Jr an in the 2nd I would take a shot at Pelle. I have watched several videos of Pelle and he def has potential.
