Andrew Luck vs. Notre Dame

Here are the notes I took when scouting the game tape of Andrew Luck vs. Notre Dame on 11-28-09. I don’t notate every play; only the ones that I feel stand out.

1st QTR (time not noted – my bad)
Out route – ball is overthrown out of catch radius to sideline – inaccurate ball

2nd QTR (5:24)
Slant route – thrown nearly into dirt – inaccurate throw.

2nd QTR (4:17)
Quick out – Good job getting throw off (back foot) – stayed in pocket and took hit – nice accuracy

2nd Qtr (1:33)
Displays good arm strength on the post route – poor timing – ball should have come out a second earlier – needs to improve coverage read should have immediately thrown ball by reading the MIKE.

3rd Qtr (8:56)
Good decision to not force ball in coverage – decides to run and picks up 20-yard gain. Impressive pocket manuverability and solid athleticism.

Footote: Luck isn’t asked to do much though he is just a redshirt freshman, Luck hands the ball off very often and isn’t heavily relied upon in the passing game.

3rd Qtr (5:13)
Very impressive mobility and clearly is a fluid athlete, but don’t confuse Luck for Michael Vick or Jake Locker.

3rd Qtr (4:01)
Flea flicker – good mechanics (footwork, release) – average touch on the football – solid arm – accurate pass to a wide open receiver

3rd Qtr (2:14)
Nice mechanics – great touch to tight end on out quick slant out – very good footwork and drives off back foot

Footnote: Luck gets a ton of experience under center in an NFL offense – should have a smooth transition to the NFL in this area unlike 95 percent of college quarterbacks.

4th Qtr (3:14)
7-step drop – footwork got sloppy – lost balance a bit – touch on the football is still a little wobbly – good accuracy over the middle in the stride on the hook route
