Super Bowl Loser Jinx 2006

If the Seahawks reach the playoffs a year after they lost in the Super Bowl, they will become the first team to accomplish that feat this decade.

A few months ago, Seattle’s greatest concern was the manner in which its football team was gypped in Super Bowl XL. Sean Locklear’s phantom holding call that negated a touchdown and a rare instance when Jerramy Stevens actually caught a pass; Ben Roethlisberger’s inexplicable long arms that somehow got the football into the end zone; Darrell Jackson’s mysterious offensive pass interference; Matt Hasselbeck’s extraordinary ability to cut block a ball carrier; and Mick Jagger’s chicken dance during the halftime show – all of which were elements of the most botched Super Bowl in NFL history.

Mike Holmgren made his feelings known in front of thousands of fans at Qwest Field.

“We knew it was going to be tough going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers,” he said. “I didn’t know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well.”

Although that’s old news by now, Seahawks fans will never forget the gold-and-black-striped zebras at Ford Field. But more significantly, it’s extremely important that everyone on Seattle’s roster forgets how the team was cheated. If they don’t, they’ll be doomed in 2006. They must concentrate on evading the dreaded Super Bowl Loser Jinx.

If you’re not familiar with the Super Bowl Loser Jinx, every team that has been defeated in the Super Bowl this decade has failed to qualify for the playoffs the following season. The New York Giants finished 7-9 after losing to the Baltimore Ravens; the St. Louis Rams also went 7-9 and lost Kurt Warner to a crucial thumb injury after being upset by the New England Patriots; The Oakland Raiders were 4-12 following a humiliating loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; the Carolina Panthers started 1-7 in 2004 despite nearly beating the Patriots; and the Philadelphia Eagles were the latest victims, finishing in last place in the NFC East at 6-10.

What do all of these second-place finishers have in common? They all came up with excuses as to why they weren’t hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. Donovan McNabb defined the phrase “choke job” as he puked all over the field when Andy Reid unearthed his brand-new six-minute offense. If only McNabb wasn’t sick during the fourth quarter. … Panthers kicker John Kasay gave Tom Brady a game-winning drive on a silver platter by kicking the ball out of bounds. If only Carolina could have taken New England to overtime. … Raiders center Barrett Robbins went MIA hours before the Super Bowl and consequently was responsible for Rich Gannon’s collapse in San Diego. If only Robbins didn’t disappear into thin air. … Mike Martz refused to run the ball with Marshall Faulk, playing into the hands of Bill Belichick. If only Martz didn’t forget the running portion of his playbook in his hotel room.

If only the Seahawks weren’t cheated in the Super Bowl. Catch my drift?

To Seattle’s credit, general manager Tim Ruskell took every precaution in preventing a Super Bowl hangover. He signed Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson away from San Francisco; vehemently snagged Nate Burleson from the Vikings, who stole Steve Hutchinson in a similar manner; added lineman Tom Ashworth, cornerback Kelly Jennings and defensive tackle Russell Davis to the roster; and managed to re-sign Shaun Alexander, Rocky Bernard and Mack Strong. Hutchinson was the team’s only key loss, but I’m confident that either Pork Chop Womack or Ashworth can replace the All Pro guard.

However, none of that will matter if the Seahawks lament over the officiating. If crying over spilled milk is a substitute for working as hard as other teams in the offseason, Seattle will become the latest squad to fail to reach the postseason after losing in the Super Bowl.

And I’ll be writing yet another column on the Super Bowl Loser Jinx in the summer of 2007.
