2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013. Major changes in all 4 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
Eben Britton was benched this past season, and replacement Mike Brewster wasn’t much better. The Jaguars will likely spend a Round 2-4 pick on a replacement.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Matt Barkley, QB

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
Kansas City’s new quarterback will need a new receiver if Dwayne Bowe leaves. I wouldn’t spend the money on Bowe; he’s overrated because he’s inconsistent and piles up most of his stats in garbage time. He was responsible for a ton of turnovers, including both of Matt Cassel’s interceptions against the Ravens.

Pick change; previously DeAndre Hopkins, WR

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State
Chip Kelly said there would be competition at the quarterback position. He probably meant between the signal-caller he just retained, Dennis Dixon and whomever he drafts in Round 2 or 3. As mentioned earlier, I can’t see Nick Foles staying on the roster; he doesn’t fit the offense, and the Eagles can get a third-rounder, at the very worst, for him.

E.J. Manuel is the best fit for Kelly’s offense out of the signal-callers available at this juncture.

  4. Detroit Lions: Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State
Both of Detroit’s starting outside linebackers are set to hit free agency. Help will obviously be needed if either Justin Durant or DeAndre Levy walk away.

Arthur Brown fits the Lions’ “best player available” strategy. I wanted to slot him at the end of the first round but couldn’t find a spot for him.

Pick change; previously Larry Warford, G

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina
BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 100-plus yards in four of the five games prior to Pittsburgh, but that’s mostly just great blocking rather than the Law Firm improving. One of the Bengals’ top priorities is finding a capable running back. Giovani Bernard would complement Green-Ellis very well.

  6. Arizona Cardinals: Mike Glennon, QB, N.C. State
John Skelton just put on one of the worst quarterbacking performances of all time in Seattle, while Kevin Kolb, who is also iffy, cannot stay healthy. Oh, and let’s not forget Ryan Lindley, who might just be even worse than Skelton. They all made Brian Hoyer look like the second coming of Kurt Warner, as Hoyer was actually capable of getting the ball to Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd.

Arizona needs a franchise quarterback, and Fitzgerald, who generally has a say in whom his team drafts, will pull for one in the first two rounds.

Mike Glennon is the best available fit for Bruce Arians’ vertical offense.

Pick change; previously Ryan Nassib, QB

  7. New York Jets: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
The Jets need to take a chance on a young quarterback because Mark Sanchez is awful. They have to give their fans some hope, or they may lose more supporters than just Fireman Ed.

Matt Barkley would be a great fit for Marty Mornhinweg’s offense. Some teams have developed an aversion for USC quarterbacks because those signal-callers are more Hollywood stars than football players, but I don’t think the Jets’ front office is smart enough to avoid making the same mistake.

Pick change; previously Eddie Lacy, RB

  8. Tennessee Titans: Matt Elam, S, Florida
The Titans have major problems at safety. Jordan Babineaux is just a marginal talent, while Michael Griffin has inexplicably dropped off this year. At first, it was believed he was struggling because he was at strong safety instead of free safety, but he continued to play poorly despite moving back to his natural spot.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
The Bills drafted a quarterback in the first round, so they’ll need to find a weapon for him. Steve Johnson is currently the only downfield play-maker on Buffalo’s roster.

  10. Miami Dolphins: Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State
With each passing day, it’s becoming more evident that Jake Long will not be back with the Dolphins next year, as the two teams just can’t seem to agree on a price. If Long leaves, Miami will have to find a new right tackle, as Jonathan Martin will move over permanently to the blind side.

Pick change; previously Barrett Jones, G/C/OT

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Charlie Campbell (@DraftCampbell) has informed me that the Buccaneers will be targeting a tight end early in the 2013 NFL Draft. Dallas Clark is a worn-down free agent, while Luke Stocker has been a disappointment thus far. Josh Freeman needs a consistent intermediate target.

  12. Carolina Panthers: Bennie Logan, DT, LSU
I was told by a reliable source not to mock Fletcher Cox to the Panthers because they were satisfied with their current group of defensive tackles. Based on the rushing yardage they surrendered to Bryce Brown and Jamaal Charles at the end of the year, I highly doubt they’ll feel the same way in April.

Pick change; previously Jesse Williams, NT

  13. San Diego Chargers: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
Both Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason will be free agents in March. The Chargers will have to find some reinforcements at cornerback if they lose either defender. A case could be made that Xavier Rhodes is the best player available.

Pick change; previously Eddie Lacy, RB

  14. St. Louis Rams: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
Lance Kendricks had an issue with drops as a rookie. He may resolve that in 2012, but if he doesn’t, the Rams could be looking for a new tight end. Remember, this regime has no allegiance to Kendricks.

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
The Cowboys hired Monte Kiffin and are moving to a 4-3 defense. Anthony Spencer said he would love to play the defensive end position across from DeMarcus Ware, but that’s probably not going to happen because Dallas doesn’t have the cap space to re-sign him. If Spencer does leave, Dallas may use this selection to find a new complement for Ware. Sam Montgomery makes a ton of sense at this spot.

Pick change; previously Eric Reid, S

  16. Pittsburgh Steelers: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
The Steelers never shy away from a play-maker if one provides good value. That’s the case with DeAndre Hopkins. The butterfingered Mike Wallace could be gone this offseason.

Pick change; previously Datone Jones, DE

  17. New York Giants: Dallas Thomas, OT/G, Tennessee
The offensive tackle position is a mess for the Giants. Will Beatty and Sean Locklear are both free agents, while David Diehl has transformed into a human turnstile recently. This is an area that desperately needs to be addressed to keep Eli Manning from getting too banged up as he advances into his 30s.

Pick change; previously Sam Montgomery, DE

  18. Chicago Bears: Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia
The Bears have revealed that they will be searching for a speed element to their passing game this offseason. If that’s the case, they won’t hesitate selecting Tavon Austin if he’s available at this juncture. Chicago cannot have Devin Hester on the field as a receiver any longer.

Pick change; previously Tavon Austin, WR

  19. Washington Redskins: Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State
Here’s some much-needed help for the Redskins’ secondary, as both safety positions need to be addressed. Brandon Meriweather cannot be relied upon to stay healthy, and it’s not like he was a Pro Bowl talent anyway. Madieu Williams, meanwhile, needs to be upgraded because he’s not any good.

  20. Minnesota Vikings: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
The front office has to add more talent to complement a very inconsistent Christian Ponder. The Vikings need an upgrade across from Percy Harvin, as Jerome Simpson is way too inconsistent to be a No. 2 receiver. Harvin may not even be back with the Vikings next year, so Minnesota may target two wideout upgrades this offseason.

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Eric Reid, S, LSU
The Bengals had a big need at safety, but they didn’t address the position until the fifth round this past April. They’ll put more effort into finding an upgrade the following offseason because they won’t survive with Reggie Nelson and the benched Taylor Mays (or cornerback Nate Clements, an impending free agent who was playing out of position) as their starters.

Pick change; previously Xavier Rhodes, CB

  22. Miami Dolphins: Robert Woods, WR, USC
Brian Hartline didn’t do very much since posting 200-plus yards at Arizona, so it’s clear that he’s not a No. 1. The Dolphins need a top option for the inconsistent Ryan Tannehill.

Pick change; previously Jamar Taylor, CB

  23. Green Bay Packers: Travis Kelce, TE, Cincinnati
Jermichael Finley recently said that his chances of staying with the Packers is 50/50. Jason La Canfora reported that Finley won’t return. If that’s the case, the Packers will be searching for a tight end early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  24. Seattle Seahawks: Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
Another second-day linebacker for Seattle. The Seahawks re-signed Leroy Hill this past offseason, but that was only for a year. He’s not expected back.

Pick change; previously Markus Wheaton, WR

  25. Houston Texans: Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama
I’ve been told that John Jenkins is a strong option for the Texans at No. 27 if they can’t land one of the two SEC linebackers. If Houston wants to upgrade the nose tackle position, perhaps it’ll look at Jesse Williams in Round 2.

Pick change; previously Sylvester Williams, NT

  26. Denver Broncos: Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State
It really bothered me that none of the ESPN shows discussed how unbelievably bad Champ Bailey was against the Ravens. He looked like a member of New Orleans’ secondary. He could be done. Tony Carter, meanwhile, is a free agent. The Broncos suddenly need help at corner.

Pick change; previously Arthur Brown, LB

  27. New England Patriots: Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State
It’s amazing that New England’s offense was incredible (until the Baltimore game) considering that Deion Branch was playing two-thirds of the snaps every game prior to being released. Imagine how explosive the Patriots would be if they added a legitimate threat opposite Brandon Lloyd. They also have to think about a possible future without Wes Welker, who will be a free agent this offseason. New England has shown that it doesn’t value Welker as much, so another team could offer him way more money.

Pick change; previously Robert Woods, WR

  28. Atlanta Falcons: Kyle Long, G/OT, Oregon
Peter Konz could eventually move to center and replace Todd McClure, but the Falcons will still need an upgrade at right guard. Because of Konz’s versatility, they can afford to take the top interior lineman available.

Pick change; previously Dallas Thomas, OT/G

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Datone Jones, DE, UCLA
The 49ers have a fantastic defense, but they’ll need to keep adding to it with some players growing older or heading into free agency. Justin Smith falls under both categories. He’ll be entering his walk year at 34 several months following the 2013 NFL Draft. San Francisco will have to find a successor sometime soon.

Pick change; previously Margus Hunt, DE/DT

  30. Baltimore Ravens: D.J. Swearinger, S, South Carolina
Jason La Canfora recently reported that some of Ed Reed’s teammates believe that he won’t be back with the Ravens next year. Reed’s an impending free agent, so he may move on with Ray Lewis also leaving. If that happens, Baltimore will obviously be looking for a new safety this offseason.
