2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 5

Last update: Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013. Round 5 added plus Alex Smith update.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: John Simon, DE/OLB, Ohio State
The Chiefs don’t have much depth behind Tamba Hali and Justin Houston – as they discovered in the Week 1 loss to Atlanta – so they could spend a mid-rounder on a rush linebacker.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Brian Winters, G, Kent State
Eben Britton was benched this past season, and replacement Mike Brewster wasn’t much better. The Jaguars will likely spend a Round 2-5 pick on a replacement.

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: Nick Kasa, TE, Colorado
The Eagles have shown a ton of interest in Nick Kasa – go here to see the 2013 NFL Draft Prospect Meetings – but that shouldn’t be a surprise, given that Kelly is familiar with Kasa, having coached against him in the Pac-12. Kelly loves utilizing tight ends in his offense, and the Eagles need one with Brent Celek in decline.

  4. Detroit Lions: Jordan Mills, OT, Louisiana Tech
The Lions are expected to move Riley Reiff inside, so with Gosder Cherilus being a free agent, there’s a big hole at right tackle. A future left tackle is needed as well.

  5. Seattle Seahawks: Travis Kelce, TE, Cincinnati
Here’s some more help for Russell Wilson. Despite Zach Miller’s heroic conversion on third-and-long early against Washington, the Seahawks could look into bringing in a new tight end. Travis Kelce falls because of character concerns.

  6. Cleveland Browns: Brandon McGee, CB, Miami
Sheldon Brown is not expected back with the Browns, so Michael Lombardi will have to find a starter across from Joe Haden.

  7. Arizona Cardinals: Stepfan Taylor, RB, Stanford
The Cardinals don’t have a proven running back on their roster, so they may spend a mid-round pick on a possible upgrade.

  8. New York Jets: Trevardo Williams, DE/OLB, Connecticut
The Jets’ inability to get to the quarterback needs to be fixed. Calvin Pace was recently cut, so a replacement is needed.

  9. Tennessee Titans: Devin Taylor, DE, South Carolina
The Titans have zero depth behind Derrick Morgan and Kamerion Wimbley, and in a division that features Matt Schaub and Andrew Luck, they need all the pass-rushing help they can get.

  10. Buffalo Bills: Cornelius Washington, DE, Georgia
The Bills spent tons of money on Mario Williams and Mark Anderson last offseason, but while the former has picked up his play after the bye, the latter was dreadful whenever he was on the field. Buffalo needs to put as much pressure on the quarterback if it wants to unseat the Patriots in the division. Cornelius Washington will be listed higher in my next update after a sterling Combine.

  11. New Orleans Saints: Marc Anthony, CB, California
The Saints obviously have to upgrade their secondary after sporting one of the worst pass defenses of all time in 2012. Marc Anthony is another prospect who is going to rise next week.

  12. San Diego Chargers: Josh Boyce, WR, TCU
The Chargers may want to add to their receiving depth after Robert Meachem flopped. I doubt they want to start Seyi Ajirotutu in the wake of injuries again.

  13. Miami Dolphins: Michael Williams, TE, Alabama
The Dolphins spent a third-round pick on a tight end last year, but it’s unlikely that Michael Egnew will be on the roster in September. Ryan Tannehill needs a real intermediate option.

  14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Luke Marquardt, OT, Azusa Pacific
Donald Penn struggled to close out the year, while Demar Dotson isn’t very good. The Buccaneers will be looking to bring in another tackle.

  15. Carolina Panthers: Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma
The Panthers are interested in Mike Wallace. If they can’t bring in him or another highly regarded free agent receiver, they’ll probably draft a wideout at some point.

  16. St. Louis Rams: Akeem Spence, DT, Illinois
The Rams have zero depth at defensive tackle. That’ll have to change via free agency or a mid-round pick.

  17. Pittsburgh Steelers: Shawn Williams, S, Georgia
Troy Polamalu can’t seem to get healthy, while Ryan Clark, who just turned 33, will be entering his contract year. The Steelers need to get younger at safety.

  18. Dallas Cowboys: Zac Stacy, RB, Vanderbilt
The Cowboys are expected to use a mid-round pick on a running back. Jerry Jones recently said that none of DeMarco Murray’s current backups are considered No. 2 runners.

  19. New York Giants: Michael Mauti, ILB, Penn State
More linebacker help for the Giants. Michael Mauti was considered a second-day prospect prior to tearing his ACL. He’s a tremendous leader who could eventually be a big upgrade in the middle of New York’s defense.

  20. Chicago Bears: Reid Fragel, OT, Ohio State
Here’s more offensive line help for the Bears. The front office really needs to shore up Jay Cutler’s protection.

  21. Washington Redskins: Kevin Reddick, ILB, North Carolina
When asked if he’s returning in 2013, London Fletcher said he’ll come back if he can “get myself healthy enough to play.” The Redskins will need help at inside linebacker if he retires.

  22. Minnesota Vikings: Jawan Jamison, RB, Rutgers
Toby Gerhart is entering his contract year and could be traded. The Vikings will need a No. 2 back in 2014 and beyond.

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Zac Dysert, QB, Miami of Ohio
The Bengals’ current No. 2 quarterback is Zac Robinson, so they may draft a backup signal-caller in the middle rounds this April.

  24. San Francisco 49ers: Kwame Geathers, NT, Georgia
The 49ers don’t really have a quality nose tackle. They don’t really need one based on the formations they play, but this is a luxury pick they can afford to make because they have so few needs.

  25. Seattle Seahawks: Demetrius McCray, CB, Appalachian State
The Seahawks haven’t drafted a cornerback yet, so here’s one. Demetrius McCray is the type of tall, long corner Pete Carroll loves to have on his defense.

  26. Green Bay Packers: Chase Thomas, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Packers need to make sure Erik Walden isn’t on the field next year. He is terrible. He’s a free agent anyway.

  27. Houston Texans: Stansly Maponga, DE/OLB, TCU
The Texans won’t have much depth at rush linebacker if they don’t retain Connor Barwin.

  28. Denver Broncos: Sanders Commings, S, Georgia
Denver’s young corners have played well alongside Champ Bailey, but safety help is needed because Michael Adams isn’t very good. He’s going to be a 32-year-old entering his contract season anyway.

  29. Washington Redskins: Vinston Painter, OT, Virginia Tech
As written in my Washington Redskins NFL Offseason Needs, the biggest hole on Washington’s front is easily right tackle. Jammal Brown is always hurt, while backup Tyler Polumbus performed miserably in his absence.

  30. Atlanta Falcons: Gerald Hodges, OLB, Penn State
I wrote this in my Atlanta Falcons Offseason Needs page: The Falcons’ play at linebacker must improve. Stephen Nicholas can’t be on the field on all three downs, while Akeem Dent was a disappointment in his first season as a starter. The team needs to find a linebacker capable of playing all three downs with Sean Weatherspoon.

  31. San Francisco 49ers: Nico Johnson, ILB, Alabama
The 49ers obviously have two outstanding inside linebackers in Patrick Willis and Navorro Bowman, but with Larry Grant hitting free agency, there’s very little depth at that position.

  32. Baltimore Ravens: Walter Stewart, DE/OLB, Cincinnati
The Ravens seem like the type of team to take a chance on someone like Walter Stewart – a possible first-round talent who has major back-related issues that nearly forced him into retirement.
