2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 3

Last update: Wednesday, March 20, 2013. Major changes in all 5 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: Kiko Alonso, ILB, Oregon
The Chiefs pretty much sent everyone to Oregon’s Pro Day, so Andy Reid had a good look at Kiko Alonso, who could perhaps be Jovan Belcher’s replacement.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Markus Wheaton, WR

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Matt Scott, QB, Arizona
The Jaguars have to spend a pick on a quarterback at some point. New general manager David Caldwell has sounded like a lunatic in his praise for Blaine Gabbert, but he must have a backup plan if/when Gabbert sucks again. Jacksonville has been linked to Matt Scott.

  3. Detroit Lions: Cornelius Washington, DE, Georgia
The Lions need defensive end help with Kyle Vanden Bosch getting cut and Cliff Avril entering free agency. Cornelius Washington, who blew up the Combine, would be a great fit in Detroit’s wide-9 formation.

  4. Oakland Raiders: Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee
There’s some speculation that Carson Palmer won’t agree to a paycut. If so, the Raiders will be looking for a quarterback – quite possibly as high as No. 3 overall with Geno Smith.

Pick change; previously Tyler Wilson, QB

  5. Philadelphia Eagles: Marc Anthony, CB, California
It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Eagles add a corner in Rounds 3-5 despite signing Bradley Fletcher and Cary Williams. Neither is a No. 1 corner, so Philadelphia may want someone who can develop into one.

Pick change; previously John Jenkins, NT

  6. Cleveland Browns: Mike Glennon, QB, N.C. State
New regimes mean new quarterbacks, so unless Michael Lombardi trades for Ryan Mallett, he could spend an early selection on a developmental signal-caller.

Pick change; previously Tyler Bray, QB

  7. Arizona Cardinals: David Bakhtiari, OT/G, Colorado
This is a pretty obvious selection. The Cardinals have pressing offensive line issues that they’ll absolutely need to resolve this offseason. If they want to keep second-rounder Matt Barkley healthy, they’ll need to find multiple upgrades up front.

Pick change; previously Sio Moore, OLB

  8. Tennessee Titans: Vance McDonald, TE, Rice
Jared Cook signed with the Rams, leaving the Titans with a pretty big hole at the tight end position (in terms of one being a pass-catcher).

Pick change; previously Jordan Reed, TE

  9. Buffalo Bills: Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB, Auburn
Last year’s Mark Anderson signing doesnt look too promising, so the Bills will be thinking about bringing in a bookend pass-rusher for Mario Williams in their new hybrid defense.

Pick change; previously Vance McDonald, TE

  10. New York Jets: Christine Michael, RB, Texas A&M
The Jets need to give their next quarterback some weapons to work with. Both the receiver and tight end positions need to be upgraded. Running back must be addressed as well. Shonn Greene signed with the Titans, but he wasn’t very good anyway.

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Robert Alford, CB, Southeastern Louisiana
The Buccaneers failed to land a cornerback in the first round of this mock draft update, so they’ll need to do so on Day 2. Their cornerback corps is an abomination.

Pick change; previously Sam Montgomery, DE

  12. San Francisco 49ers: Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State
Jim Harbaugh loves utilizing multiple tight ends on offense, so Delanie Walker signing with the Titans foiled his plans.

Pick change; previously Jamie Collins, DE/OLB

  13. New Orleans Saints: D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston
The Saints obviously have to upgrade their secondary after sporting one of the worst pass defenses of all time in 2012. Keenan Lewis was added, but another cornerback is needed.

Pick change; previously Robert Alford, CB

  14. San Diego Chargers: Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina
The Chargers signed Danny Woodhead, but he’s obviously not a threat to overtake Ryan Mathews as the lead back. San Diego needs someone to challenge the injury-prone bust.

Pick change; previously Marc Anthony, CB

  15. Miami Dolphins: Knile Davis, RB, Arkansas
The Dolphins don’t seem to like Daniel Thomas very much, so they may consider a mid-round complement for Lamar Miller.

Pick change; previously Gavin Escobar, TE

  16. St. Louis Rams: Robert Woods, WR, USC
The Rams were unable to land Tavon Austin in the first round, so they’ll have to settle for someone like Robert Woods on Day 2 to take over Danny Amendola’s duties.

Pick change; previously David Bakhtiari, OT/G

  17. Pittsburgh Steelers: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
The Steelers never shy away from a play-maker if one provides good value. That’s the case with Terrance Williams. The butterfingered Mike Wallace signed with the Dolphins.

Pick change; previously Aaron Dobson, WR

  18. Dallas Cowboys: Dallas Thomas, G/OT, Tennessee
The interior of Dallas’ offensive line is an abomination. The front office found two downgrades at guard last offseason. Hopefully it finds better players this time around.

Pick change; previously Barrett Jones, G/C/OT

  19. New York Giants: Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
Keith Rivers just signed a 1-year deal, but he’s not the long-term solution because he can never stay healthy. General manager Jerry Reese said that there needs to be better linebacker play next year.

Pick change; previously Travis Frederick, G/C

  20. Miami Dolphins: Tharold Simon, CB, LSU
With Sean Smith gone, the Dolphins will probably be looking to draft two cornerbacks early this April.

Pick change; previously Justin Pugh, G/OT

  21. Minnesota Vikings: Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State
As noted in my Minnesota Vikings NFL Offseason Needs, Harrison Smith deserves Rookie of the Year consideration, but he’s the only talented safety on Minnesota’s roster.

Pick change; previously Ryan Swope, WR

  22. Cincinnati Bengals: Sio Moore, OLB, Connecticut
The Bengals lost Manny Lawson this offseason. They re-signed Rey Maualuga to perhaps play the strongside linebacker spot, but considering how much he has struggled the past two seasons, they’d be crazy not to bring in some competition.

Pick change; previously Jelani Jenkins, OLB

  23. Washington Redskins: Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State
The Redskins have to fix their secondary, but something else they should do is find some help at receiver. I think they’ll do that if they get good value. That’s definitely the case in this scenario.

  24. Indianapolis Colts: Travis Frederick, G/C, Wisconsin
The Colts signed Gosder Cherilus, but they still need to find another upgrade on the interior of their offensive line. The weakest of Andrew Luck’s blockers last year was right guard Mike McGlynn, who was guilty of four sacks in the final four games.

Pick change; previously Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB

  25. Seattle Seahawks: Everett Dawkins, DT, Florida State
Perhaps Seattle’s greatest priority this offseason is finding an interior pass-rushing presence. Having something like that would make the already-awesome secondary much more potent.

  26. Green Bay Packers: Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
Greg Jennings took the money and ran to Minnesota, so the Packers consequently may target a receiver early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Aaron Dobson, WR

  27. Houston Texans: Jon Bostic, ILB, Florida
There’s a ton of uncertainty at inside linebacker for Houston. Brian Cushing is coming off a torn ACL, Bradie James is an impending free agent who isn’t very good, while neither Tim Dobbins nor Darryl Sharpton is worthy of starting.

Pick change; previously D.J. Swearinger, S

  28. Denver Broncos: Montee Ball, RB, Wisconsin
John Fox is not shy about using early selections on running backs. He needs one. Willis McGahee is old, Knowshon Moreno can’t be trusted, and Ronnie Hillman’s just a chance-of-pace back.

Pick change; previously Knile Davis, RB

  29. New England Patriots: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
The Patriots have used a third-round pick on a falling SEC quarterback before. There’s talk that Bill Belichick could trade Ryan Mallett to Michael Lombardi, so if that happens, New England may search for another project at the signal-caller position.

Pick change; previously Marquise Goodwin, WR/KR

  30. Atlanta Falcons: Jelani Jenkins, OLB, Florida
As noted in my Atlanta Falcons Offseason Needs page, the Falcons’ play at linebacker must improve. Stephen Nicholas can’t be on the field on all three downs, while Akeem Dent was a disappointment in his first season as a starter. The team needs to find a linebacker capable of playing all three downs with Sean Weatherspoon.

Pick change; previously Zaviar Gooden, OLB

  31. San Francisco 49ers: Eric Reid, S, LSU
The 49ers could draft two safeties. One has to replace Dashon Goldson, while the other could take over for Donte Whitner in the near future. Whitner will be a free agent next spring.

Pick change; previously Tharold Simon, CB

  32. Baltimore Ravens: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
The Ravens take chances on players like Da’Rick Rogers. If Rogers stays out of trouble, he could be a solid weapon for Joe Flacco. He can be a solid replacement for Anquan Boldin, who was dealt to the 49ers. Check out the 2013 NFL Free Agent Grades page for my grades for Baltimore and San Francisco in that deal.

  33. Houston Texans: J.J. Wilcox, S, Georgia Southern
The Texans have to find safety help in the wake of losing Glover Quin in free agency to the Lions.

  34. Kansas City Chiefs: Ryan Swope, WR, Texas A&M
The Chiefs re-signed Dwayne Bowe and added Donnie Avery, but they could still be looking for receiver help in the middle rounds.

  35. Tennessee Titans: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
No one should be surprised if Sam Montgomery falls to the third round or later. His comments about quitting and betting on football have drawn some serious red flags. However, he’s the best player available and fills a big need for Tennessee.

The Titans have zero depth behind Derrick Morgan and Kamerion Wimbley, and in a division that features Matt Schaub and Andrew Luck, they need all the pass-rushing help they can get.
