2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 5

Last update: Wednesday, March 20, 2013. Major changes in all 5 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
Don’t count out the Chiefs using a mid-round pick on a young quarterback to groom behind Alex Smith. If the Redskins could use first- and fourth-rounders on signal-callers, why can’t Kansas City?

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously William Gholston, DE/DT

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Luke Marquardt, OT, Azusa Pacific
The Jaguars have no real right tackle on the roster. They’ll have to find one earlier than this.

Pick change; previously Hugh Thornton, G

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: Nick Kasa, TE, Colorado
The Eagles have shown a ton of interest in Nick Kasa – go here to see the 2013 NFL Draft Prospect Meetings – but that shouldn’t be a surprise, given that Kelly is familiar with Kasa, having coached against him in the Pac-12. Kelly loves utilizing tight ends in his offense, and the Eagles need one even after signing James Casey, given that Brent Celek is in decline.

  4. Detroit Lions: Will Davis, CB, Utah State
The Lions still need cornerback help even after re-signing Chris Houston.

Pick change; previously Jawan Jamison, RB

  5. Seattle Seahawks: Dion Sims, TE, Michigan State
Here’s some more help for Russell Wilson. Despite Zach Miller’s heroic conversion on third-and-long early against Washington, the Seahawks could look into bringing in a new tight end.

  6. Cleveland Browns: Chase Thomas, DE/OLB, Stanford
Michael Lombardi is a fan of having tons of pass-rushers. He could use some more depth.

Pick change; previously Brandon McGee, CB

  7. Arizona Cardinals: Le’Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State
The Cardinals don’t have a proven running back on their roster, so they may spend a mid-round pick on a possible upgrade.

  8. New York Jets: Michael Buchanan, DE/OLB, Illinois
The Jets’ inability to get to the quarterback needs to be fixed. Calvin Pace was recently cut, so a replacement is needed.

Pick change; previously Chris Harper, WR

  9. Tennessee Titans: Jordan Mills, OT, Louisiana Tech
Right tackle David Stewart probably won’t be around much longer, so the Titans may want to find a possible successor in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Devin Taylor, DE

  10. Buffalo Bills: Michael Williams, TE, Alabama
General manager Buddy Nix recently told the media that he plans on upgrading the tight end position. Expect a Round 2-5 selection to be used on this.

Pick change; previously Shawn Williams, S

  11. New Orleans Saints: William Gholston, DE/DT, Michigan State
The Saints need to continue adding personnel for their new 3-4. They’re pretty thin up front.

Pick change; previously Jordan Mills, OT

  12. San Diego Chargers: Trevardo Williams, DE/OLB, Connecticut
Shaun Phillips is a free agent, so San Diego will need a complement for Melvin Ingram if it can’t retain its long-time veteran.

Pick change; previously Chase Thomas, DE/OLB

  13. Miami Dolphins: Gerald Hodges, OLB, Penn State
Something the Dolphins must do this offseason is find some linebacker depth because they’re awfully thin there. They signed two expensive linebackers, but they also cut two in the process.

  14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Josh Johnson, CB, Purdue
The Buccaneers don’t ever shy away from doubling up on positions. They may do so at cornerback, as this was a huge area of need even before the Aqib Talib trade.

Pick change; previously Michael Williams, TE

  15. Carolina Panthers: Earl Wolff, S, N.C. State
Hiro Nakamura could stop time. Haruki Nakamura can’t stop anyone. He has to be upgraded. The Panthers desperately need safety help.

Pick change; previously Shamarko Thomas, S

  16. St. Louis Rams: Sanders Commings, S, Georgia
The Rams already had a need at safety prior to the Quintin Mikell release. Now this hole is even more glaring.

  17. Pittsburgh Steelers: Jawan Jamison, RB, Rutgers
Rashard Mendenhall won’t be back next year and Jonathan Dwyer isn’t viewed as a starter per reports, so the Steelers will need to find a new running back.

Pick change; previously Stepfan Taylor, S

  18. Dallas Cowboys: Josh Boyce, WR, TCU
Miles Austin-Jones will be back next year, but he may not be around much longer after that. The Cowboys will have to find a long-term solution across from Dez Bryant.

  19. New York Giants: Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma
The Giants could be looking for some depth at receiver, given that Ramses Barden won’t be back next year.

  20. Chicago Bears: Brian Winters, G, Kent State
Here’s more offensive line help for the Bears. The front office really needs to shore up Jay Cutler’s protection.

  21. Washington Redskins: Brandon McGee, CB, Miami
The Redskins have to come away from the 2013 NFL Draft with at least two cornerbacks. They’re so thin at the position.

Pick change; previously Luke Marquardt, OT

  22. Minnesota Vikings: Jordan Hill, DT, Penn State
The Vikings could draft two defensive tackles, given that they won’t have anything at the position once Kevin Williams moves on in the near future.

Pick change; previously Johnathan Franklin, RB

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Zac Dysert, QB, Miami of Ohio
The Bengals’ current No. 2 quarterback is Zac Robinson, so they may draft a backup signal-caller in the middle rounds this April.

  24. San Francisco 49ers: Kwame Geathers, NT, Georgia
The 49ers don’t really have a proven, quality nose tackle. They don’t really need one based on the formations they play, but this is a luxury pick they can afford to make because they have so few needs.

  25. Seattle Seahawks: Demetrius McCray, CB, Appalachian State
The Seahawks haven’t drafted a cornerback yet, so here’s one. Demetrius McCray is the type of tall, long corner Pete Carroll loves to have on his defense.

  26. Green Bay Packers: Stansly Maponga, DE/OLB, TCU
Before Erik Walden left, I wrote that the Packers need to make sure Walden wouldn’t be on the field next year. It’s strange that the Colts paid him so much money.

  27. Houston Texans: Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State
The Texans lost Connor Barwin to the Eagles, so they’ll have to find some depth behind Brooks Reed and Whitney Mercilus.

Pick change; previously Oday Aboushi, G/OT

  28. Denver Broncos: Terry Hawthorne, CB, Illinois
The Broncos signed Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but that was for only one year. They have a number of corners with expiring contracts in March 2014.

Pick change; previously Jordan Hill, DT

  29. Washington Redskins: Travis Long, DE/OLB, Washington State
The Redskins lost Lorenzo Alexander to the Cardinals, so they may want to add to their outside linebacker depth.

Pick change; previously Trevardo Williams, DE/OLB

  30. Atlanta Falcons: Akeem Spence, DT, Illinois
More help for the Falcons’ defensive line. Peria Jerry just can’t seem to live up to his potential because of his knee problems.

  31. San Francisco 49ers: Walter Stewart, DE/OLB, Cincinnati
The 49ers are all about drafting high-upside players and redshirting them until they’re ready to play. They could do that with Walter Stewart, who would be a second-round prospect if it weren’t for his injury concerns.

Pick change; previously Kevin Reddick, ILB

  32. Baltimore Ravens: Shawn Williams, S, Georgia
If the Ravens can’t retain Ed Reed, they’ll need to find two new safeties.

Pick change; previously Michael Mauti, ILB

  33. Miami Dolphins: Joseph Fauria, TE, UCLA
The Dolphins signed Dustin Keller, but they need a blocking tight end because they lost Anthony Fasano in free agency.

  34. Green Bay Packers: David Bass, DE/OLB, Missouri Western
Two rush linebackers for the Packers. They really have no depth behind Clay Matthews and Nick Perry, and even Perry is pretty iffy.

  35. Baltimore Ravens: Michael Mauti, ILB, Penn State
The Ravens could double up on both safeties and inside linebackers. They have such huge holes at both positions after losing multiple players at each spot.

Michael Mauti was considered a second-day prospect prior to tearing his ACL. He’s a tremendous leader who could eventually be a starter somewhere.
