2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2013 NFL Mock Draft is loosely based on my 2012 NFL Power Rankings.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
Right tackle Cameron Bradfield has not played well in limited action this year. The Jaguars will want to protect their new quarterback. By the way, if you’re looking for Jake Matthews, I’ve decided to exclude him in this update. It’s not like he needs the money, and I feel like Bruce will want his son to get his degree.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Brennan Williams, OT

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
Kansas City’s new quarterback will need a new receiver if Dwayne Bowe leaves. I wouldn’t spend the money on Bowe; he’s overrated because he’s inconsistent and piles up most of his stats in garbage time. He was responsible for both of Matt Cassel’s interceptions against the Ravens.

  3. Cincinnati Bengals: T.J. McDonald, S, USC
The Bengals had a big need at safety, but they didn’t address the position until the fifth round this past April. They’ll put more effort into finding an upgrade the following offseason because they won’t survive with Reggie Nelson and the recently benched Taylor Mays (for cornerback Nate Clements, who is playing out of position) as their starters.

  4. Carolina Panthers: Carrington Byndom, CB, Texas
The Panthers will need some cornerback help this offseason. Captain Munnerlyn will be a free agent, while rookie Josh Norman has yet to prove that he can be a quality starter in the NFL.

  5. Miami Dolphins: David Amerson, CB, N.C. State
The Dolphins have an extra second-day pick because they dealt Vontae Davis to the Colts, so they should probably use one of them on a replacement. Richard Marshall is not playing well.

  6. Buffalo Bills: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
The Bills drafted a quarterback in the first round, so they’ll need to find a weapon for him. Steve Johnson is currently the only downfield play-maker on Buffalo’s roster.

  7. Tennessee Titans: Dallas Thomas, OT/G, Tennessee
Will the Titans finally upgrade the interior of their offensive line, or are they content with Chris Johnson gaining just 2.9 yards per carry unless he’s playing the Bills?

  8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama
Gerald McCoy is having a fantastic season, but the Buccaneers need help next to him after dismissing Brian Price prior to the beginning of the season.

  9. Cincinnati Bengals: Chase Thomas, DE/OLB, Stanford
Another linebacker. The Bengals were able to upgrade Rey Maualuga in the first round. Chase Thomas would help with Manny Lawson leaves via free agency. He could also rush the passer on third downs if Michael Johnson also moves on.

Pick change; previously C.J. Mosley, ILB

  10. New York Jets: Brennan Williams, OT, North Carolina
The Jets have to find an upgrade at right tackle. Mark Sanchez has no chance behind Austin Howard.

Pick change; previously Tyler Bray, QB

  11. St. Louis Rams: Dion Jordan, DE/OLB, Oregon
Jeff Fisher loves having defensive line depth, but his team is currently lacking that right now. Why not take one of the top players available to fill that void?

Pick change; previously Tank Carradine, DE

  12. Dallas Cowboys: Alex Okafor, DE/OLB, Texas
Anthony Spencer has played well when healthy this year, but he’ll be a free agent this March who will be difficult to retain. If he leaves, the Cowboys will have to find a worthy complement across from DeMarcus Ware.

Pick change; previously Kenny Vaccaro, S

  13. San Diego Chargers: Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State
Both Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason will be free agents following this season. The Chargers will have to find some reinforcements at cornerback if they lose either defender.

Pick change; previously Dion Jordon, DE/OLB

  14. Philadelphia Eagles: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
Kurt Coleman beat out Jaiquwan Jarrett, who was recently waived. Coleman’s not any good, despite his two picks of Brandon Weeden, so the Eagles will have to look for another solution.

Pick change; previously Tony Jefferson, CB

  15. Detroit Lions: Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State
Kyle Vanden Bosch, 34 next month, is having a down year and probably won’t be back next season because he’s due $5 million. The Lions need help at defensive end.

Pick change; previously Jordan Poyer, CB

  16. Arizona Cardinals: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
This is a pretty obvious selection. The Cardinals have pressing offensive line issues that they’ll absolutely need to resolve next spring. If they want to keep Kevin Kolb at quarterback, they’ll need to protect him because he’s so brittle.

  17. Minnesota Vikings: Marquess Wilson, WR, Washington State
The Vikings have to add more talent to complement Christian Ponder. They need an upgrade across from Percy Harvin, as Jerome Simpson is way too inconsistent to be a No. 2 receiver.

  18. Washington Redskins: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
The Redskins are really hurting for cornerback depth, and it’ll only get worse after the 2013 season when Josh Wilson will be a free agent and DeAngelo Hall will be due $9 million in a contract year.

  19. Miami Dolphins: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
I’m not sure if Brian Hartline qualifies as a No. 1 receiver just yet. I can’t really explain the whole thing myself, but he appears to be a starting-caliber wideout despite his zero-catch performance against the Rams. The Dolphins, however, need another one for Ryan Tannehill, who needs a better second option than Davone Bess, who should just be a tertiary slot receiver target.

Pick change; previously Kenny Stills, WR

  20. Baltimore Ravens: Nickell Robey, CB, USC
The Ravens suddenly have glaring issues at cornerback. Lardarius Webb tore an ACL for the second time in his career, while Cary Williams will be a free agent in March.

Pick change; previously Michael Mauti, ILB

  21. Seattle Seahawks: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Adding play-makers for Russell Wilson has to be a priority for the Seahawks this offseason. Help is also needed at tight end.

Pick change; previously Dion Sims, TE

  22. San Francisco 49ers: Khaled Holmes, C, USC
The 49ers could use some help on the offensive line. Khaled Holmes could eventually take over for Jonathan Goodwin, who will be 34 in December.

  23. Pittsburgh Steelers: Sheldon Richardson, DE/DT, Missouri
The Steelers spent first-round picks on Cameron Heyward and Ziggy Hood, but they’ve both been huge disappointments. They really need an upgrade up front.

Pick change; previously Sean Porter, DE/OLB

  24. Denver Broncos: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
The Broncos spent a second-rounder this past April on Derek Wolfe, but he’s playing defensive end and moving inside on nickel situations. That’s why Denver still needs a ton of help at defensive tackle, especially after that pathetic showing against New England’s running game.

  25. Atlanta Falcons: John Simon, DE, Ohio State
John Abraham was re-signed to a team-friendly deal this offseason, which means the Falcons can cut him if he regresses. Ray Edwards, meanwhile, has been a huge disappointment. Defensive end will be a possibility early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Larry Warford, G

  26. Chicago Bears: Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford
Brian Urlacher’s successor. Urlacher will be a 35-year-old free agent this upcoming offseason and he’s struggled in run support this year. His declining play is probably the result of his knee injury, but will Chicago re-sign him if it fears his body is breaking down? Even if the front office does retain him, Shayne Skov can play strongside linebacker and slide into the middle once Urlacher moves on.

  27. New England Patriots: Travis Frederick, G/C, Wisconsin
Bill Belichick loves versatile offensive linemen. Travis Frederick can play all three inside positions. This is key because the Patriots need to do something about the interior of their offensive front. Tom Brady has gotten killed at times because of poor blocking.

  28. Green Bay Packers: Dion Sims, TE, Michigan State
Jermichael Finley will be due close to $8 million in 2013, and Packer fans should be happy about that because Finley is one of the most overrated players in the NFL. He’s terribly inconsistent and doesn’t appear as though he’ll ever live up to expectations.

Pick change; previously Da’Rick Rogers, WR

  29. Houston Texans: Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
The Texans, with very few needs, can afford to take the best player available. Antonio Smith will be a free agent following the 2013 season, so Houston will need someone to step in starting in 2014.

  30. New York Giants: Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
The Giants have issues in the middle of their defense. The safety position is a problem, as is inside linebacker. Chase Blackburn shouldn’t be starting, while Keith Rivers, a free agent in March, can never get healthy.
