2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jonathan Cooper, G/C, North Carolina
    Jonathan Cooper can play both guard and center, which has to appeal to the Jaguars because they need both. Left guard Eben Britton, a free agent in March, has been benched twice this season. Center Brad Meester, whose contract also expires after this year, will turn 36 soon.

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
    Kansas City’s new quarterback will need a new receiver if Dwayne Bowe leaves. I wouldn’t spend the money on Bowe; he’s overrated because he’s inconsistent and piles up most of his stats in garbage time. He was responsible for both of Matt Cassel’s interceptions against the Ravens.

  3. Carolina Panthers: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
    The Panthers will need some cornerback help this offseason. Captain Munnerlyn will be a free agent, while rookie Josh Norman has yet to prove that he can be a quality starter in the NFL.



  4. Buffalo Bills: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
    The Bills drafted a quarterback in the first round, so they’ll need to find a weapon for him. Steve Johnson is currently the only downfield play-maker on Buffalo’s roster.

  5. Philadelphia Eagles: Matt Elam, S, Florida
    Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman have more missed tackles this season (21) than any other safety tandem in the NFL, save for the Saints and Titans. The Eagles must find at least one upgrade at the position. Matt Elam has been a stud for Florida this year.

  6. Washington Redskins: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
    The Redskins absolutely need to do something about the safety position. Eli Manning just needed two plays to score the game-winning touchdown several weeks ago. Even Armanti Edwards looked great against them.

  7. New York Jets: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
    The Jets have dire issues at right tackle that need to be addressed. Mark Sanchez stinks, but he doesn’t even have a chance with Austin Howard blocking for him.

  8. Cincinnati Bengals: T.J. McDonald, S, USC
    The Bengals had a big need at safety, but they didn’t address the position until the fifth round this past April. They’ll put more effort into finding an upgrade the following offseason because they won’t survive with Reggie Nelson and the recently benched Taylor Mays (or cornerback Nate Clements, who is playing out of position) as their starters.

  9. St. Louis Rams: Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State
    Jeff Fisher loves having defensive line depth, but his team is currently lacking that right now. Why not take one of the top players available to fill that void?

  10. Tennessee Titans: Barrett Jones, G/C/OT, Alabama
    Chris Johnson has finally regained CJ2K form in recent weeks, but that doesn’t mean the Titans can’t use an upgrade or two on the offensive line. Help is needed on the interior, and Barrett Jones can play every position there.

  11. San Diego Chargers: Alex Okafor, DE/OLB, Texas
    The Chargers just spent an early pick on a rush linebacker (Melvin Ingram), so why would they do that again? Well, Shaun Phillips will be a 32-year-old free agent next March, so San Diego will need a complement for Ingram.

  12. Miami Dolphins: Carrington Byndom, CB, Texas
    The Dolphins have an extra second-day pick because they dealt Vontae Davis to the Colts, so they should probably use one of them on a replacement. Richard Marshall is not playing well.

  13. Dallas Cowboys: Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB, Auburn
    Anthony Spencer has played well when healthy this year, but he’ll be a free agent this March who will be difficult to retain. If he leaves, the Cowboys will have to find a worthy complement across from DeMarcus Ware.

  14. Arizona Cardinals: E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State
    The Cardinals have to do something about the quarterback position. Kevin Kolb can’t ever stay healthy, while John Skelton has shown no signs of improvement thus far. In fact, he looks like he’s regressed. Is it too late to ask Kurt Warner to come back?

  15. Detroit Lions: David Amerson, CB, N.C. State
    It’s no secret that Detroit has major holes in its secondary. The Lions spent an early pick on Bullet Bill Bentley has been a bit of a disappointment thus far. Unfortunately, Detroit won’t be able to see what he can do for the rest of the year because he’s on injured reserve.

  16. Cincinnati Bengals: Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford
    The Bengals have major problems at linebacker. They lost Keith Rivers this past offseason, Manny Lawson will be a free agent in the spring, and Rey Maualuga is arguably one of the worst defensive starters in the NFL. I don’t know if he’s hurt or what, but he’s been awful this season.

  17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
    The Buccaneers don’t ever shy away from doubling up on positions. They may do so at cornerback, as this was a huge area of need even before the Aqib Talib trade.

  18. Minnesota Vikings: Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama
    The Vikings can address one of their biggest needs with arguably the best player available. Defensive tackle is a big issue right now; Kevin Williams will turn 33 in August, and there’s no one of note playing next to him. Letroy Guion is a decent rotational guy but should not be a starter.

  19. New York Giants: Oday Aboushi, OT, Virginia
    It’s hard to criticize Tom Coughlin because he’s had so much success over the years, but benching Sean Locklear in favor of the anemic David Diehl was one of the all-time bone-headed coaching moves in NFL history. Coughlin clearly doesn’t like Locklear, who will be a free agent in March.

  20. Seattle Seahawks: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
    Adding play-makers for Russell Wilson has to be a priority for the Seahawks this offseason. Help is also needed at tight end.

  21. Miami Dolphins: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
    Stud defensive tackle Randy Starks will be a free agent in March. If the Dolphins can’t retain him, they’ll have to find a replacement this offseason.

  22. Pittsburgh Steelers: Chase Thomas, DE/OLB, Stanford
    James Harrison may not be back next year. He’ll be due $6.6 million as a 35-year-old who is having trouble staying healthy. The Steelers may spend an early pick on a rush linebacker.

  23. New England Patriots: Cobi Hamilton, WR, Arkansas
    It’s amazing that New England’s offense has been this incredible considering that Deion Branch is playing two-thirds of the snaps every game. Imagine how explosive the Patriots would be if they added a legitimate threat opposite Brandon Lloyd.

  24. Green Bay Packers: Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma
    Greg Jennings will be a free agent in March. He’s proven to be unreliable in terms of staying healthy, so the Packers may choose not to re-sign him. If so, they may target a receiver early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  25. Denver Broncos: Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
    Is Keith Brooking really a major contributor for the Broncos at middle linebacker? How have teams not exposed this yet? Denver needs a long-term solution at the position.

  26. San Francisco 49ers: Nickell Robey, CB, USC
    Teams are always looking for cornerback depth, especially if they have extra picks. Besides, Carlos Rogers isn’t playing as well this season.

  27. Chicago Bears: Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State
    Every single corner on the Bears’ roster is entering either free agency or their contract year, including Charles Tillman, who will be owed $8.5 million in 2013. Depth will be needed.

  28. Baltimore Ravens: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
    The Ravens take chances on players like Da’Rick Rogers. If Rogers stays out of trouble, he could be a solid weapon for Joe Flacco. The declining Anquan Boldin will be entering his contract year and will have to be replaced soon.

  29. Houston Texans: Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
    The Texans, with very few needs, can afford to take the best player available. Antonio Smith will be a free agent following the 2013 season, so Houston will need someone to step in starting in 2014.

  30. Atlanta Falcons: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
    Peter Konz will eventually move to center and replace Todd McClure, but the Falcons will still need an upgrade at right guard.
