2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1 – Picks 17-32

  1. St. Louis Rams: Chance Warmack, G, Alabama
    Guards seldom have a chance to go in the top 15, but Chance Warmack has a shot because he’s a special talent. Besides, he’s the top prospect available who makes sense for St. Louis.

    The Rams desperately need to upgrade their offensive front. Jeff Fisher played against the Texans twice per year when he was with Tennessee, and he watched Houston completely ruin David Carr’s career by not building a competent offensive line around him. He won’t want to make the same mistake with Sam Bradford.

  2. Dallas Cowboys: Johnathan Jenkins, NT, Georgia
    The Cowboys had the option of picking J.J. Watt at No. 9 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. They went with Tyron Smith, who was great in his rookie campaign, but they were hurting at the defensive end position as a consequence. In this scenario, they’d be able to move Jay Ratliff outside. It’s something they were thinking about when they were seriously considering taking Dontari Poe in April.

  3. Minnesota Vikings: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
    For years, the Vikings have watched in envy as the Bears possessed one of the top middle linebackers in the NFL. Perhaps now it’ll be Minnesota’s opportunity to turn the tables and secure a stud middle linebacker of their own. Alec Ogletree just had a monstrous season for Georgia and has shot himself up into top-20 consideration. He’s the top player on the board and would offer the Vikings a huge upgrade over the anemic Jasper Brinkley.

  4. Cincinnati Bengals: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
    Geno Atkins is a monster in the interior, but the Bengals have to find pass-rushing help on the outside, especially with Michael Johnson set to hit free agency. Sam Montgomery is arguably the top player available, so Cincinnati can fill a big need with the top prospect on the board.



  5. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alex Okafor, DE/OLB, Texas
    James Harrison may not be back next year. He’ll be due $6.6 million as a 35-year-old who is having trouble staying healthy. The Steelers may spend an early pick on a rush linebacker.

  6. Seattle Seahawks: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
    The Seahawks’ receiving corps really needs to be upgraded. Sidney Rice is constantly laboring through injuries and has struggled to get any sort of separation for most of the season. Braylon Edwards is done, while Golden Tate is way too inconsistent, though he’s been better lately. Russell Wilson keeps improving every week, so Pete Carroll needs to bolster his wideout corps.

    This is a bit high for Terrance Williams, but the Seahawks don’t fear taking anyone who is deemed a reach. Pete Carroll will likely fall in love with Williams’ size and straight-line speed.

  7. New York Giants: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
    Giant fans know that general manager Jerry Reese loves drafting pass-rushers. With Osi Umenyiora entering free agency this March and Justin Tuck having a down year, Reese may select a defensive end at the end of the first round. Ezekiel Ansah doesn’t have much experience, but he’s a highly athletic pass-rusher who has tremendous upside. Remind you of anyone?

  8. Indianapolis Colts: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
    Winston Justice has actually played surprisingly well this year at right tackle, but I asked recently if that could continue over 16 games? Well, Justice has struggled a bit lately and cannot seem to stay healthy. The Colts need to improve Andrew Luck’s pass protection.



  9. Chicago Bears: Jonathan Cooper, G/C, North Carolina
    If you watched the Bears struggle to score against the Texans, you know that they need to find multiple upgrades for their struggling offensive line. Jonathan Cooper can play multiple positions up front.

  10. Green Bay Packers: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
    Jermichael Finley will be due close to $8 million in 2013, and Packer fans should be happy about that because Finley is one of the most overrated players in the NFL. He’s terribly inconsistent and doesn’t appear as though he’ll ever live up to expectations.

  11. Denver Broncos: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
    Denver’s young corners have played well alongside Champ Bailey, but safety help is needed because Michael Adams isn’t very good. He’s going to be a 32-year-old entering his contract season anyway.

    Kenny Vaccaro has been outstanding this season and should now be the top safety prospect – though I wouldn’t count out Matt Elam.

  12. Baltimore Ravens: C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
    The Ravens wanted Dont’a Hightower, but the Patriots moved ahead of them and stole him. Maybe Ozzie Newsome will select another SEC linebacker as a successor for Ray Lewis in April. Lewis was thought to be out for the year with torn triceps. His career could be over very soon.



  13. San Francisco 49ers: Matt Elam, S, Florida
    Donte Whitner hasn’t been very good this year. Dashon Goldson, meanwhile, was slapped with a franchise tag this prior offseason. The 49ers will need a replacement if they can’t sign him to a long-term deal.

  14. New England Patriots: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
    It’s amazing that New England’s offense has been this incredible considering that Deion Branch was playing two-thirds of the snaps every game prior to being released. Imagine how explosive the Patriots would be if they added a legitimate threat opposite Brandon Lloyd. They also have to think about a possible future without Wes Welker, who will be a free agent this offseason. New England has shown that it doesn’t value Welker as much, so another team could offer him way more money.

  15. Atlanta Falcons: Barrett Jones, G/C/OT, Alabama
    Peter Konz could eventually move to center and replace Todd McClure, but the Falcons will still need an upgrade at right guard (or center if they decide to keep Konz where he is right now). They’ll also have to find help at right tackle if Tyson Clabo continues to struggle. Barrett Jones can play four positions up front.

  16. Houston Texans: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
    The Texans have needed a No. 2 receiver for years, but now that Andre Johnson is into his 30s, it won’t be long before they have to secure a new No. 1 wideout for Matt Schaub. Justin Hunter provides great value at the bottom of the first round.
