2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
Regardless of whether Gene Smith is fired or not – it’ll be shocking if he keeps his job – the Jaguars will spend one of their first two picks on a quarterback. Blaine Gabbert is done starting for Jacksonville. He’s absolutely terrible.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
Kansas City’s new quarterback will need a new receiver if Dwayne Bowe leaves. I wouldn’t spend the money on Bowe; he’s overrated because he’s inconsistent and piles up most of his stats in garbage time. He was responsible for both of Matt Cassel’s interceptions against the Ravens.

By the way, I’m slotting DeAndre Hopkins into this mock and kicking Robert Woods out. Woods’ stock has dropped so much that he may decide to come back for another year.

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
Even if Cullen Jenkins is back next year – he’s due a $1 million roster bonus in March – it’ll likely be his last season in Philadelphia because he’s set to make $4.5 million (with a $2 million roster bonus) in 2014. The Eagles will need someone to play alongside Fletcher Cox.

  4. Carolina Panthers: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
The Panthers will need some cornerback help this offseason. Captain Munnerlyn will be a free agent, while rookie Josh Norman has yet to prove that he can be a quality starter in the NFL.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina
BenJarvus Green-Ellis has fumbled several times this year, which is terrible news for him because ball security was his only positive trait. One of the Bengals’ top priorities is finding a capable running back.

  6. Tennessee Titans: Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State
Cornerback Alterraun Verner will be entering his contract year in 2013, so Tennessee will need a new starter if it can’t retain him. Besides, the Titans need to fix their 27th-ranked pass defense.

  7. Arizona Cardinals: Dallas Thomas, OT/G, Tennessee
This is an obvious pick. The Cardinals drafted a quarterback in Round 1, so they cannot allow him to go through what Skelekolbdley has to endure right now. The offensive line absolutely must be addressed ASAP.

Pick change; previously Lane Johnson, OT

  8. Detroit Lions: Eric Reid, S, LSU
It’s no secret that Detroit has major holes in its secondary. Amari Spievey desperately needs to be upgraded, while Louis Delmas can’t seem to stay healthy.

  9. San Diego Chargers: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
There’s no explanation needed here if you’ve watched various teams pummel Philip Rivers the entire season. The Chargers must do something about the tackle position.

Pick change; previously Dallas Thomas, OT/G

  10. Miami Dolphins: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
Brian Hartline is a starting-caliber wideout, but in the wake of his two-catch, 17-yard performance against the Seahawks, it’s clear that he’s not a No. 1. The Dolphins need a top option for the inconsistent Ryan Tannehill.

  11. New York Jets: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
The Jets have dire issues at right tackle that need to be addressed. Mark Sanchez stinks, but he doesn’t even have a chance with Austin Howard blocking for him.

  12. Buffalo Bills: Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
Here’s the franchise quarterback that Buddy Nix was referring to. It’s a shame that the Bills are opting to address this position in such a weak class, but that’s the price they’re paying for drafting Aaron Williams over Andy Dalton and Colin Kaepernick in 2011.

  13. St. Louis Rams: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Here’s another weapon for Sam Bradford. The Rams don’t have anything at tight end, as Lance Kendricks has been a huge disappointment.

  14. Washington Redskins: David Amerson, CB, N.C. State
DeAngelo Hall, who has underperformed this year, is due $7.5 million in 2013, but none of it is guaranteed. The Redskins can easily cut him and move on. Regardless of whether they do this or not, they have to find some help at the cornerback position.

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB, Auburn
Anthony Spencer has played well when healthy this year, but he’ll be a free agent this March who will be difficult to retain. If he leaves, the Cowboys will have to find a worthy complement across from DeMarcus Ware.

  16. Minnesota Vikings: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
The Vikings can address one of their biggest needs with arguably the best player available. Defensive tackle is a big issue right now; Kevin Williams will turn 33 in August, and there’s no one of note playing next to him. Letroy Guion is a decent rotational guy but should not be a starter.

  17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
The Buccaneers don’t ever shy away from doubling up on positions. They may do so at cornerback, as this was a huge area of need even before the Aqib Talib trade.

  18. Cincinnati Bengals: Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford
The Bengals have major problems at linebacker. They lost Keith Rivers this past offseason, Manny Lawson will be a free agent in the spring, and Rey Maualuga is arguably one of the worst defensive starters in the NFL. I don’t know if he’s hurt or what, but he’s been awful this season.

  19. Seattle Seahawks: Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama
The Seahawks are having difficulty stopping the run right now, which is unusual for them. They need an upgrade on the interior, and Alan Branch happens to be a free agent in March anyway.

Pick change; previously Oday Aboushi, OT

  20. New York Giants: Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
The Giants have issues in the middle of their defense. The safety position is a problem, as is inside linebacker. Chase Blackburn shouldn’t be starting, while Keith Rivers, a free agent in March, can never get healthy.

  21. Pittsburgh Steelers: T.J. McDonald, S, USC
Troy Polamalu can’t seem to get healthy, while Ryan Clark, who just turned 33, will be entering his contract year. The Steelers need to get younger at safety.

  22. Miami Dolphins: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
Stud defensive tackle Randy Starks will be a free agent in March. If the Dolphins can’t retain him, they’ll have to find a replacement this offseason.

  23. Green Bay Packers: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
James Starks has yet to prove that he can stay healthy, while Alex Green has shown nothing in several starts. Cedric Benson is obviously not a long-term answer, so the Packers may address the running back position early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Andre Ellington, RB

  24. Chicago Bears: Nickell Robey, CB, USC
Every single corner on the Bears’ roster is entering either free agency or their contract year, including Charles Tillman, who will be owed $8.5 million in 2013. Depth will be needed.

  25. Baltimore Ravens: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
The Ravens take chances on players like Da’Rick Rogers. If Rogers stays out of trouble, he could be a solid weapon for Joe Flacco. The declining Anquan Boldin will be entering his contract year and will have to be replaced soon.

  26. Denver Broncos: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
The Broncos need an upgrade on the offensive line. Right guard Manuel Ramirez was not getting the job done for the suddenly injury-prone Chris Kuper. Zane Beadles isn’t good on the other side either. They can easily be upgraded with a second-day pick.

Pick change; previously Jesse Williams, NT

  27. San Francisco 49ers: Chase Thomas, DE/OLB, Stanford
The 49ers have a fantastic defense, but they have a serious lack of depth at rush linebacker. With so few needs, they can afford to take the best player available to address that problem.

Pick change; previously Carrington Byndom, CB

  28. New England Patriots: Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
Chandler Jones has had a monstrous rookie campaign thus far, but the Patriots need someone across from him to get to the quarterback, as Jermaine Cunningham has been a disappointment.

  29. Atlanta Falcons: John Simon, DE, Ohio State
The overpaid Ray Edwards was recently cut. Meanwhile, John Abraham was re-signed to a team-friendly deal last offseason, which means the Falcons can release him if he regresses. Defensive end will be a priority early in the 2013 NFL Draft, and the Falcons may even double dip at the position in the first few rounds.

  30. Houston Texans: Oday Aboushi, OT, Virginia
The Texans were interested in bringing in a right tackle early in the 2012 NFL Draft, but they never got the chance. Well, here’s their opportunity. The position will have to be addressed if the currently injured Rashad Butler can’t properly fill in for Eric Winston.

Pick change; previously Cobi Hamilton, WR
