2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
Regardless of whether Gene Smith is fired or not – it’ll be shocking if he keeps his job – the Jaguars will spend one of their first two picks on a quarterback. Blaine Gabbert is done starting for Jacksonville. He’s absolutely terrible.

I never imagined that Matt Barkley could fall to Round 2, but it’s definitely a strong possibility now. He really cost himself by going back to school.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
Kansas City’s new quarterback will need a new receiver if Dwayne Bowe leaves. I wouldn’t spend the money on Bowe; he’s overrated because he’s inconsistent and piles up most of his stats in garbage time. He was responsible for both of Matt Cassel’s interceptions against the Ravens.

Pick change; previously DeAndre Hopkins, WR

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
Even if Cullen Jenkins is back next year – he’s due a $1 million roster bonus in March – it’ll likely be his last season in Philadelphia because he’s set to make $4.5 million (with a $2 million roster bonus) in 2014. The Eagles will need someone to play alongside Fletcher Cox.

  4. Detroit Lions: Barrett Jones, G/C/OT, Alabama
Barrett Jones can play virtually any position on the offensive line, including center. Detroit’s current center, the declining Dominic Raiola, will be due $4.05 million in a 2013 walk year. Help is needed at guard as well.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina
BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 100-plus yards in four of the five games prior to Pittsburgh, but that’s mostly just great blocking rather than the Law Firm improving. One of the Bengals’ top priorities is finding a capable running back. Giovani Bernard would complement Green-Ellis very well.

  6. Tennessee Titans: Dallas Thomas, OT/G, Tennessee
Chris Johnson has finally regained CJ2K form in recent weeks, but that doesn’t mean the Titans can’t use an upgrade or two on the offensive line. Help is needed on the interior, and Dallas Thomas can play multiple positions up front.

  7. Arizona Cardinals: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
John Skelton just put on one of the worst quarterbacking performances of all time in Seattle, while Kevin Kolb, who is also iffy, cannot stay healthy. Oh, and let’s not forget Ryan Lindley, who might just be even worse than Skelton. They’ve all made Brian Hoyer look like the second coming of Kurt Warner, as Hoyer was actually capable of getting the ball to Larry Fitzgerald.

Arizona needs a franchise quarterback, and Fitzgerald, who generally has a say in whom his team drafts, will pull for one in the first two rounds.

Pick change; previously Mike Glennon, QB

  8. Buffalo Bills: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
The Bills drafted a quarterback in the first round, so they’ll need to find a weapon for him. Steve Johnson is currently the only downfield play-maker on Buffalo’s roster.

Pick change; previously Cobi Hamilton, WR

  9. New York Jets: Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
The Jets need to take a chance on a young quarterback because Mark Sanchez is awful. They have to give their fans some hope, or they may lose more supporters than just Fireman Ed.

  10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
The Buccaneers don’t ever shy away from doubling up on positions. They may do so at cornerback, as this was a huge area of need even before the Aqib Talib trade.

  11. Carolina Panthers: Matt Elam, S, Florida
I think we can all confirm that the real Hiro Nakamura can’t stop time. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have made so many terrible plays this year. The Panthers desperately need safety help, and Matt Elam is one of the top prospects available.

Pick change; previously Xavier Rhodes, CB

  12. San Diego Chargers: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
The Chargers almost have to make this pick. Philip Rivers appears to be regressing, but it’s impossible to tell if that’s the case because he’s getting slaughtered behind a pathetic offensive line. San Diego cannot, under any circumstances, enter the 2013 season with Jared Gaither as its starting left tackle. He’s just way too injury-prone and unreliable.

Pick change; previously Alex Okafor, DE/OLB

  13. Miami Dolphins: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
Stud defensive tackle Randy Starks will be a free agent in March. If the Dolphins can’t retain him, they’ll have to find a replacement this offseason.

  14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Eric Reid, S, LSU
Troy Polamalu can’t seem to get healthy, while Ryan Clark, who just turned 33, will be entering his contract year. The Steelers need to get younger at safety.

  15. St. Louis Rams: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Here’s a weapon for Sam Bradford. The Rams don’t have anything at tight end, as Lance Kendricks has been a huge disappointment.

  16. New York Giants: Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
Giant fans know that general manager Jerry Reese loves drafting pass-rushers. With Osi Umenyiora entering free agency this March and Justin Tuck having a down year, Reese may select a defensive end in the early rounds. Margus Hunt had a monstrous bowl game and will be considered as a first-round prospect if he dominates at the Combine and at his Pro Day.

Pick change; previously Khaseem Greene, LB

  17. Dallas Cowboys: Johnathan Jenkins, NT, Georgia
The Cowboys had the option of picking J.J. Watt at No. 9 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. They went with Tyron Smith, who was great in his rookie campaign, but they were hurting at the defensive end position as a consequence. In this scenario, they’d be able to move Jay Ratliff outside. It’s something they were thinking about when they were seriously considering taking Dontari Poe in April.

I had Johnathan Jenkins going way too early in my previous mock drafts. I think this is the right spot for him.

Pick change; previously Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB

  18. Chicago Bears: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
If you’ve watched the Bears struggle to score over the past few weeks, you know that they need to find multiple upgrades for their struggling offensive line.

  19. Washington Redskins: Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State
DeAngelo Hall, who has underperformed this year, is due $7.5 million in 2013, but none of it is guaranteed. The Redskins can easily cut him and move on. Regardless of whether they do this or not, they have to find some help at the cornerback position.

  20. Minnesota Vikings: Cobi Hamilton, WR, Arkansas
The Vikings have to add more talent to complement Christian Ponder. They currently need an upgrade across from Percy Harvin, as Jerome Simpson is way too inconsistent to be a No. 2 receiver. Harvin may not even be back with the Vikings next year, so Minnesota may target two wideout upgrades this offseason.

Pick change; previously Sylvester Williams, DT

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: T.J. McDonald, S, USC
The Bengals had a big need at safety, but they didn’t address the position until the fifth round this past April. They’ll put more effort into finding an upgrade the following offseason because they won’t survive with Reggie Nelson and the benched Taylor Mays (or cornerback Nate Clements, who is playing out of position) as their starters.

  22. Miami Dolphins: Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia
Brian Hartline hasn’t done very much since posting 200-plus yards at Arizona, so it’s clear that he’s not a No. 1. The Dolphins need a top option for the inconsistent Ryan Tannehill.

  23. Seattle Seahawks: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
Seattle’s defense is dominant, but one thing the unit is lacking is a consistent interior pass-rushing presence. Perhaps Sylvester Williams and his six sacks this year can fix that.

Pick change; previously Lane Johnson, OT

  24. Baltimore Ravens: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
The Ravens take chances on players like Da’Rick Rogers. If Rogers stays out of trouble, he could be a solid weapon for Joe Flacco. The declining Anquan Boldin will be entering his contract year and will have to be replaced soon.

  25. San Francisco 49ers: Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB, Auburn
The 49ers have a fantastic defense, but they have a serious lack of depth at rush linebacker. With so few needs, they can afford to take the best player available to address that problem.

Pick change; previously Chase Thomas, DE/OLB

  26. New England Patriots: David Amerson, CB/S, N.C. State
Despite Steve Gregory’s performance against the pathetic Jets, New England still has issues at safety it’ll need to address this offseason. David Amerson may have to move to safety in the NFL, but I’m sure Bill Belichick will love his versatility.

  27. Green Bay Packers: Joseph Randle, RB, Oklahoma State
James Starks has yet to prove that he can stay healthy, while Alex Green has shown nothing in several starts. Cedric Benson is obviously not a long-term answer, so the Packers may address the running back position early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  28. Denver Broncos: Everett Dawkins, DT, Florida State
The Broncos spent a second-rounder this past April on Derek Wolfe, but he’s playing defensive end and moving inside on nickel situations. That’s why Denver still needs a ton of help at defensive tackle.

  29. Houston Texans: Oday Aboushi, OT, Virginia
The Texans were interested in bringing in a right tackle early in the 2012 NFL Draft, but they never got the chance. Well, here’s their opportunity. The position will have to be addressed if the currently injured Rashad Butler can’t properly fill in for Eric Winston.

  30. Atlanta Falcons: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
Peter Konz could eventually move to center and replace Todd McClure, but the Falcons will still need an upgrade at right guard. Because of Konz’s versatility, they can afford to take the top interior lineman available.
