  1. New York Jets: Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Cordarrelle Patterson, WR

The Jets have to keep Mark Sanchez on the roster next season because cutting him would result in a $17.1 million cap hit. Giving Sanchez such a contract was a fireable offense, so it’s no surprise that the Jets now have a new general manager.

Fortunately, New York can get out of Sanchez’s nightmare deal following the 2013 campaign, and its fans can finally move on to a real quarterback. Maybe Fireman Ed will even return.

I had Jadeveon Clowney going first overall in one of my previous 2014 NFL Mock Drafts, but I’m dropping him out of the top spot. He’s still the best player projected to be available, but the demand for quarterbacks is too great. Besides, Teddy Bridgewater and Johnny Manziel are much better than the signal-callers entering this April’s draft.

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Dion Jordan, DE/OLB

Anyone who thinks Johnny Manziel is too small to be chosen in the top five is completely mistaken. Manziel currently stands at 6-foot-1, 200. That’s taller than Drew Brees and Russell Wilson. Robert Griffin (6-2, 220) is pretty much the same size as Manziel will be following next season. Manziel also boasts a very good arm and great accuracy. There’s no reason why he can’t be a top-five selection if he continues to play as he did in his Heisman campaign.

You know a team’s quarterback situation is dire when Chad Henne represents some hope. Making matters worse, new general manager David Caldwell believes in building around Blaine Gabbert. That’s an embarrassing statement, as Caldwell clearly hasn’t watched much tape on Gabbert. He’s about to find out how terrible and cowardly he is. Jacksonville isn’t going anywhere until it addresses the quarterback position.

  3. Oakland Raiders: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Sharrif Floyd, DT

The Raiders are terrible for many reasons, one of which is their inability to put pressure on the quarterback. Only the Jaguars finished with fewer sacks this past season.

Jadeveon Clowney is the obvious pick with the two top quarterbacks off the board. Left end Lamarr Houston will be a free agent after this upcoming season, and he could prove to be too expensive for the cap-strapped Raiders. Also, Clowney is the best player available by a wide margin. Oakland simply cannot pass on him.

  4. Tennessee Titans: Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Chance Warmack, G

It’s no surprise that Jake Matthews returned to school, given that his father, Hall-of-Famer Bruce Matthews, wanted his son to earn his degree. Plus, it’s not like Jake needed the money.

The Titans are fine at offensive tackle right now, but Michael Roos and David Stewart will be free agents in 2015 and 2014, respectively (the latter has a voidable year after this upcoming season). They’ll need to retool at the position if they don’t re-sign either of the two.

  5. Kansas City Chiefs: Marqise Lee, WR, USC
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Luke Joeckel, OT

The Chiefs could consider David Fales here to be their new franchise quarterback, but considering they gave up so much for Alex Smith, they may give the former 49er signal-caller two seasons to prove himself. Andy Reid’s a stubborn guy, so he may blame Smith’s predictable struggles on a lacking receiving corps.

Marqise Lee has enjoyed a terrific 2012 campaign and is currently projected to be a top-five pick despite the recent USC wideout failures.

  6. Philadelphia Eagles: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Sheldon Richardson, DE/DT

I have the Eagles picking E.J. Manuel in the second round of my 2013 NFL Mock Draft, but factoring in two rounds’ worth of selections a year in advance would be way too complicated.

The bottom line is that the quarterback position is Philadelphia’s greatest need – something that will be even more prevalent next spring once the current signal-caller is dumped after another season of countless turnovers.

It’s early, but Tajh Boyd will likely garner top-10 consideration – especially from a team like the Eagles. Boyd would be a perfect fir in Chip Kelly’s offense. The 6-foot-1 Clemson product is not just a runner; he completed 67.2 percent of his passes last year while maintaining a 9.1 YPA and a 36-to-13 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

  7. Cleveland Browns: David Fales, QB, San Jose State
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Ezekiel Ansah, DE/OLB

This class is rich in quarterback prospects, which includes David Fales, who is coming off a tremendous season for San Jose State. The Browns desperately need a franchise quarterback, but they may have to wait until the 2014 NFL Draft to get one. Michael Lombardi has made it known that he doesn’t like Brandon Weeden, so he’ll be frantically searching for an upgrade.

  8. Arizona Cardinals: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Eric Fisher, OT

The poor Cardinals just barely miss out on a quarterback. In this scenario, they’ll just take the best player available who makes sense for them, and that could be Bradley Roby, who would fill a big need for them across from Patrick Peterson.

Roby considered declaring for the 2013 NFL Draft. If he had, he’d be probably be the second corner off the board. He had a ridiculous 17 pass break-ups as a redshirt sophomore.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Geno Smith, QB

Bills general manager Buddy Nix stated that he wants to update the quarterback and receiver positions this offseason. If he can’t address the latter this spring, he could make an effort to acquire a No. 1 wideout in the 2014 NFL Draft. Buffalo has to find a worthy complement for Stevie Johnson.

  10. San Diego Chargers: Anthony Barr, DE/OLB, UCLA
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Lane Johnson, OT

The Chargers spent a first-round pick on rush linebacker Melvin Ingram in the 2012 NFL Draft, but they may need to double dip at the position because Shaun Phillips is heading for free agency this offseason. Someone like Barkevious Mingo makes sense for San Diego at No. 11 this April. If the Chargers go with Lane Johnson instead, they’ll consider Anthony Barr.

A former running back, Barr played defense for the first time this past season and made an instant impact, recording 13 sacks. The sky’s the limit for him, as he’ll only get better at his new position.

  11. St. Louis Rams: Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Jonathan Cooper, G and Alec Ogletree, LB

The Rams have to find weapons and protection for Sam Bradford because he barely has anything to work with. They need a left tackle, but unless they can sign Jake Long, they’ll probably have to wait until next offseason to obtain one.

No. 11 overall is probably where Taylor Lewan would go had he declared for the 2013 NFL Draft, but a year is a long time and a lot can happen. He took an enormous risk with virutally no upside by deciding to return to Michigan.

  12. Minnesota Vikings: Stephon Tuitt, DT, Notre Dame
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Keenan Allen, WR

The Vikings currently need a defensive tackle next to Kevin Williams, but they also have to find a successor for the long-time Minnesota Pro Bowler, who will be 34 a few months after the 2014 NFL Draft. Stephon Tuitt would be the perfect replacement, given that he’s a force in all aspects (11 sacks in 2013).

  13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Aaron Lynch, DE, South Florida
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Desmond Trufant, CB

The Buccaneers have issues all over on defense, one of which is at the end position if they can’t re-sign Michael Bennett. If Bennett leaves and Da’Quan Bowers doesn’t prove himself as a worthy complement for Adrian Clayborn, Tampa Bay could target local product Aaron Lynch.

  14. Dallas Cowboys: Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Kenny Vaccaro, S

There’s a good chance Doug Free will be released this year. If not, he’s definitely gone next season if his play doesn’t improve. The Cowboys have to protect Tony Romo or whomever their quarterback will be beginning in 2014.

  15. St. Louis Rams: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): Jonathan Cooper, G and Alec Ogletree, LB

The Rams have to keep adding pieces around Sam Bradford. It’s obvious that the team needs to acquire a No. 1 wideout and fix the offensive line, but the tight end position should also be addressed.

It’s not usual to see a tight end go this high, but Austin Seferian-Jenkins is an absolute stud. He’ll be a matchup nightmare, much like Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham.

  16. Indianapolis Colts: Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB, BYU
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/27): D.J. Fluker, OT

Indianapolis’ defense is a mess. It needs help on every level, so it might as well start in the front seven with the best player available. The pass rush must be upgraded, as Dwight Freeney was a poor fit in the team’s new 3-4 scheme.

Kyle Van Noy logged 13 sacks in 2012. He was espcially hot down the stretch, recording 5.5 sacks in his final three games.
