Emmitt on the Brink. The premise: Coming off a Super Bowl victory, the Patriots open the 2013 season with a blowout win. Unfortunately, they get into trouble for Spygate II. As punishment, Roger Goodell orders the Patriots to fire Bill Belichick and replace him with Emmitt Smith. Three years later, the Patriots beat the Bears in the Super Bowl, 2-0. After the game, Emmitt announced his retirement. This is a weekly feature that will take a newspaper reporter’s perspective and follow Emmitt through his post-retirement days. EMMITT WELCOMES BACK FAMILIAR FACE

NFL Commissioner Emmitt had meetings all week at the league headquarters. The subject: How to stop Thornin Yourside, leader of the White Russians, who planned a hostile takeover of the NFL.
Emmitt, also general manager of the Patriots, regretted not interacting with his coaching staff for the upcoming divisional-round battle against the Kansas City Chiefs. Stopping Patrick Mahomes would be an issue, but his quarterback, DeShone Kizer, has been majestic since undergoing surgery to correct his colorblindness.
“They’ll be A-OK,” Emmitt said to himself, while washing his hands in the bathroom. “They gonna be B-OK as well, too, also.”
Emmitt left the restroom and re-joined the meeting with the other league officers. He was quick to notice that they had joyous expressions on their faces; a stark change to their glum attitudes before the 30-minute poop.
“Emmitt, a special person is here to see you,” secretary and translator Melissa Stark beamed.
The door opened, and there he was. It was Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith.
Emmitt didn’t waste any time. He leapt toward his son and embraced him. Tears cascaded out of his eyes.
“Son, I never thought you never gonna comed home,” Emmitt sobbed.
“I’m here, father,” Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith said.
Emmitt was so happy that he almost wanted to ignore that his son was somehow different. He didn’t want that to question it. He couldn’t. Not after losing his other son.
“Do you found out what north of South America?” Emmitt asked a while later.
“Yes, I found the Three-Eyed Baltimore Raven, and now I am the Three-Eyed Baltimore Raven,” Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith said. “That means that I know everything and can see everything.”
Everyone in the room believed Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith because, well, why the hell not? Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith could have shown everyone the past, but there was no time for that. And why would he when everyone blindly trusted him?
“Father, the great enemy has arrived, and I know they are after me,” Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith said. “I believe Thornin Yourside told you that he killed Emmitt Snow Jr. because he knew who he was. That was half the truth. Thornin Yourside visited a seer named Maggy the Toad who told him the relative of Emmitt will be his downfall, so he assumed that was Emmitt Snow Jr.”
“I confuse, very confuse,” Emmitt said. “Do Maggy have a toad, or do she becomed a toad like a man become a weredog?”
“Father, we must make haste,” Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith said. “Thornin Yourside will come after me. You can use me as bait by placing me in the stadium against the White Russians this Sunday.”
“But we do not play the Russian Whites this weekend,” Emmitt said. “We play the Kansas State Chief.”
“I’m aware of what the schedule looks like,” Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith said. “Hold on, let me make the appropriate changes.”
Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith’s eyes went completely white.
“Is he OK!?” Stark gasped.
She had her answer seconds later when Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith’s eyes reverted to normal.
“Father, check NFL bylaw 322, section 13,” Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith said stoically.
Emmitt opened the book to the page, as requested. He saw the rule instantly.
“Bylaw 322, Section 13: The NFL commissioner may reorder the playoff field in any fashion he wishes if a team has prevailed in three consecutive games by the score of 45-0.”
THE LONG FIGHT

The Patriots were supposed to be traveling to Kansas City for a divisional-round battle. Instead, the team gathered in Gillette Stadium, ready to take on the White Russians.
Major preparations were made for the impending battle. Trenches that weren’t quite wide enough were dug around the football field. Trebuchets, placed in front of the trenches for some reason, were ready to hurl projectiles at things that don’t die permanently. Women and children weren’t evacuated for some reason, and they were placed in the crypts where former Patriot greats were buried. This didn’t seem like the best idea, given that White Russian Czar Thornin Yourside is capable of reanimating the deceased, but who were we to argue?
No one said a word, though nervous farts could be heard from the men on the front line. Special teamers, of course.
Suddenly, everyone began seeing their breath. This meant that the White Russians were in the vicinity. Or, because it was January in New England.
“Emmitt’s battle strategy is to have us charge recklessly into complete darkness,” said Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent, serving as Emmitt’s battle commander. “Well, men, this might be it. Let’s kill as many undead football players as possible, even though they can’t die permanently!”
“Wait, Mr. Vincent, isn’t some lady supposed to show up and light our football pads on fire to give us a glimmer of hope that we can survive?” one of the special teamers asked.
“A lady showing up and lighting your football pads on fire?” Vincent asked. “Why would we count on that happening? There’s been no indication that this would ever occur, so I don’t know why you would even speculate about that.”
The special teamer shrugged his shoulders.
“Charge!” Vincent shouted, seconds later.
The special teamers ran full force into the dark void. Their confident roars quickly transformed into agonized wails. Then, there was complete silence once again, save for the footsteps of one man. It was Troy Vincent, who limped back to everyone else. It looked like the undead forces struck him several times, but his thick armor, made of the finest plot in the seven continents, was able to shield its wearer.
“That do not work good,” Emmitt said while sitting upon his magical goose.
“Whoops, I guess I screwed up again despite being the cleverest man in the seven continents,” Darren Sproles said.
“I can see everything, so I could have told you it was a waste of time,” Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith said. “But I let it happen because I’m not particularly fond of special teamers.”
“Well, it time for me to fly around on my goose and burn a lot of thing even though it real dark and I cannot seened very well,” Emmitt said, taking off.
Emmitt wasn’t lying. It was pitch black at Gillette Stadium; Thornin Yourside must have cut off the electricity to give himself a strategic advantage.
Emmitt wasn’t the only one who couldn’t see what he was doing. Everyone else was in the dark as well. Count us in, too. It was difficult to determine what was happening for the most part. We were able to see some insignificant players die, but the main characters survived, even though it seemed like they were swarmed by countless undead football players on several occasions.
The undead football players, accompanied by the White Russians, attempted to cross the trenches.
“Light the trenches!” Vincent yelled, but to no avail. It was predictably too cold for the trenches to be lit. Oh, if only some fire-wielding woman were here to accomplish this task! And if only Emmitt would torch the trenches by commanding his goose to do it.
The trenches were never set ablaze, allowing the White Russians and undead football players to easily cross them. The trebuchets, meanwhile, accomplished nothing.
It didn’t take long for Thornin Yourside to approach Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith, who was seated in the far end zone.
All hope seemed lost. It wasn’t clear who would save him. Emmitt was flying around aimlessly on his goose. Troy Vincent was fighting off the undead to save Melissa Stark. Goodell Bot 2.0 was backed against a wall by undead football players for a half hour, yet somehow hadn’t died. The only person remaining was Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith’s friend, Deion Blacksad, who charged at Thornin Yourside.
“You’re a good man,” Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith said to Deion Blacksad as he was impaled by Thornin Yourside’s spear. “I mean, sure, you burned innocent children earlier in your life, but you’re a good man nonetheless.”
Thornin Yourside wasted no time marching toward Emmitt Smith IV, the III, the V, Sr., the VIII, Jr. Sr. XII Smith. He reached for the boy’s head when a swift wind knocked the furry hat off one of the White Russians.
“AHHHHHH!” a voice shouted.
It was Emma Smith III. Emmitt’s sister. She came to the rescue!
Emma Smith III tried to stab Thornin Yourside with a ketchup-soaked knife, but Thornin Yourside grabbed her by the neck.
He began to squeeze it tightly, but Emma Smith III allowed the knife to drop into her other hand. She quickly thrust the blade into Thornin Yourside’s gut.
Thornn Yourside instantly dissolved into liquid. One by one, the White Russians melted as well. Why? We’re not sure. It just happened.
And just like that, Thornin Yourside and the White Russian threat were gone. It was a ton of buildup for a quick battle in the dark, but it was entertaining and featured a surprise kill by a character who not only had no prior interaction to the main bad guy, but was never mentioned at any point ever. In fact, we aren’t even sure if Emma Smith III even knew what Thornin Yourside looked like, but it was a shocking twist, and that’s what matters most.
