Emmitt on the Brink. The premise: Coming off a Super Bowl victory, the Patriots open the 2013 season with a blowout win. Unfortunately, they get into trouble for Spygate II. As punishment, Roger Goodell orders the Patriots to fire Bill Belichick and replace him with Emmitt Smith. Three years later, the Patriots beat the Bears in the Super Bowl, 2-0. After the game, Emmitt announced his retirement. This is a weekly feature that will take a newspaper reporter’s perspective and follow Emmitt through his post-retirement days. THE BATTLE AGAINST FRANKIE AND THE RAT

The two men in the alleyway who ambushed Emmitt and his friends didn’t quite seem like the other rioters. While most people on the streets were more interested in senselessly throwing bricks and torching buildings, this encounter seemed more personal.
“I’m Joey the Rat,” the aptly named rat-faced man said. “And this here is Frankie Stechino. Frankie is, how you say, not very pleased at the moment.”
“Not pleased at all,” Frankie grumbled, cracking his knuckles.
“You see, we have a bit of a problem,” Joey the Rat said. “You’re trying to stop this pandemic from happening, and there are some who, let’s just say, stand to profit from all of this. They like the pandemic, which is what brings us to this pleasant meeting because you seem, let’s say, hellbent on stopping it. It’s not, how you say, very appealing to us that you’re trying to stop the pandemic.”
“I like pandemics,” Frankie growled, cracking his other knuckles.
“So, let’s see if we can resolve our differences,” Joey the Rat continued. “I like pandemics, Frankie here likes pandemics, so maybe all of yous can like pandemics. How about it, huh? If you turn around right now and surrender yourselves to Goodell Bot again, we can avoid the pain and suffering that we can inflict upon yous on this lovely night. Because Frankie here is ready and willing to inflict some pain and suffering.”
“I love pain and suffering,” Frankie growled, cracking his neck.
Emmitt knew he had to say something to quell the situation. He couldn’t exactly reverse course and re-surrender himself to Goodell Bot. It was his destiny, after all, to fight a giant bear with his revived bastard son, Emmitt Snow Jr., in order to stop the pandemic. How Emmitt Snow Jr. would be vivified was still a mystery, however.
“Joey the Rat, it sound like you real angriness right now,” Emmitt said. “But maybe you real angriness because you choosed ugly animal to be your mickname. The only rat who real popular are Mickey the Rat, who happen to be the president of Walt Discus. Maybe you should pick a stronger animal like dog, wolf or hippopotamasaurs.”
“You know, Joey the Hippopotamus has a certain ring to it,” Joey the Rat said. “What do you think, Frankie? Should I be called Joey the Hippopotamus? It sounds great, don’t it?”
“Frankie’s favorite animal is a hippopotamus,” Frankie said, clenching his fists.
“So, that settles it,” Joey the, umm, Hippopotamus said. “Now, I’m Joey the Hippopotamus from now on. But don’t think this changes anything. Frankie is still mad that you’re threatening his pandemics.”
Quinton Dunbar turned to DeAndre Baker and vented his frustration.
“And to think, all of this could’ve been prevented if we just let the Mako reactor blow up,” Dunbar said. “Then that cop Karen Chauvin wouldn’t have killed President Shinra because she wouldn’t have known about the social distancing violation, and these riots never would’ve started.”
“Yeah, we should’ve just did as Tifa Lockhart asked,” Baker lamented.
“Whoa, did you say Tifa Lockhart?” asked Frankie, who suddenly seemed cheerful. “She’s- she’s so beautiful. How do I get her to notice me? Do you think I should read her some of my poetry?”
“Frankie, what are you doin’?” Joey the Hippopotamus asked, suddenly sounding nervous. “Our orders were to stop these punks from ending the pandemic.”
“I like pandemics, but I love Tifa Lockhart,” Frankie said. “What do you guys think about this poem? Roses are red, violets are blue, I think you’re special, Tifa, let’s go get some milkshakes.”
Frankie blushed. He nervously looked at everyone to see if there was any feedback. Emmitt was the first to offer some.
“Frankie, this was one of the best poemtry I ever heard,” he said. “I use to sing poemtry to my girlfriend Marie Russell Marie, and she love it, and none of my poemtry as beautiful as that poemtry you just singed.”
Frankie beamed.
“I’m going to serenade Tifa with this poem,” Frankie declared, turning around. Joey the Hippopotamus ran after him.
“Frankie, wait, I can’t handle these punks by myself!”
A VERY MAD AND HUNGRY BEAR

Governor Andrew Fredo and Pennsylvania health secretary Ragnar Levine held their head in shame as they entered the chambers to meet with the four congressmen, none of whom were very pleased. Fellow governor Gretchen Umbridge was also in the room. She had her arms crossed and sported a satisfactory expression on her face.
“What happened?” growled congressman Aqib Talib. “We thought you and Goodell Bot 2.1 would stop Emmitt from reaching ESPN headquarters.”
Fredo cleared his throat and wiped some sweat off his brow. This was going to be difficult to explain.
“I put my best men on the case,” Fredo said. “We started some riots to distract Emmitt and his friends, and my best men were going to capture them and return them to Goodell Bot’s dungeon, I mean man cave, but Emmitt’s friends mentioned Frankie Stechino’s love interest, Tifa Lockhart, and-”
“Enough!” Talib snarled. “This is ridiculous. You had one job, and you failed. You failed, and now we’re all going to lose our power!”
“Hey, Gretchen, you’re like the only like woman in the group of like governors so I’m like disappointed because you’re like supposed to be like smarter than them and stuff,” congressman Alejandro Octagon-Vortex said.
“My idea was perfect, but the execution was terrible,” Umbridge smiled widely and very creepily at Fredo. “If it were up to me, I would have handled Emmitt and his friends myself. I would not have sent a couple of dimwitted thugs to do my dirty work.”
A chill ran down Fredo’s spine. He knew things would only get worse.
“What I recommend is that you send me to deal with Emmitt and his friends,” Umbridge recommended. “But before I go, I believe Fredo and Levine should be severely punished. They have failed you, and thus cannot be trusted. What if they go to the media? I will be happy to punish them myself before I depart.”
“Make it so,” said congressman Elvis Presley Jr. “And thank you for rectifying their mistake. Thank you very much.”
Some large men in suits and sunglasses grabbed Fredo and Levine before they could escape.
“Wait, I have an idea, how about we send in the rioters into nursing homes!?” Fredo cried out in desperation.
“Yeah, but let me move my mother first!” Lavine wailed.
The large men in suits didn’t pay attention, dragging Fredo and Lavine out of the room as Umbridge followed with a cocky strut.
“My goodness, she gives me the creeps,” Talib said.
The three other congressmen nodded in agreement when Ilya Hatesamerica’s phone rang. She looked at the sceen and quickly answered it upon inspection. She nervously greeted the caller and then proceeded to put the phone on speaker.
“This is more than a giant bother, this is an enormous bother, that Emmitt and his friends to escape,” the caller said. “This is akin to a year’s worth shortage of honey, or perhaps even a rape.”
“We’re sorry,” Hatesamerica said. “We did not expect Emmitt and his friends to outsmart Andrew Fredo’s thugs. We’re now-”
“You sent thugs to stop them, oh bother, oh giant bother, this is quite bad!” the caller yelled. “I’m getting on the next flight to America to stop them myself, golly, I’m very mad!”
“We sent Gretchen Umbridge to take care of them,” Talib chimed in. “She’s our best governor. Nothing will get past her. She’ll capture them and then you won’t have anything to worry about. Your pandemic will spread as planned.”
“Then why wasn’t this the plan in the first place, you incompetent fools?” the caller hissed. “You’re so dumb, I almost think you don’t even know the value of honey, even if you were next to someone who saw honey and drools.”
“I’m sorry, like, umm, like, I think, like,” Octagon-Vortex stammered.
“That’s it, I’ve made up my mind,” the caller said. “I’m taking the next flight to America, so prepare tubs of honey for me in case I leave my collection behind.”
The caller hung up the phone before anyone had a chance to respond.
“This is no good,” Talib said, with the other three congressmen nodding. “Gretchen needs to come through, or we’re all screwed.”
