Live 2017 NFL Draft Grades: Round 6

2017 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | NFL Draft Team Grades

  1. Cleveland Browns: Caleb Brantley, DT, Florida: B- Grade
I said I wouldn’t give Millen grades to fifth-rounders, but I didn’t say anything like that about sixth-round choices! This pick is just horrible because Caleb Brantley was charged with knocking a woman unconscious recently, and there’s still an investigation going on. The Browns even said they could cut him if they discover negative details! Brantley is a talented player, but he’s lazy and showed up to pre-draft workouts overweight and out of shape. He’s not worth a draft selection.

Update: I seldom do updated draft grades – there will be re-grades a year from now – but I thought this was necessary, as the charges against Caleb Brantley have been dropped. Thus, my TEACH THE ORANGUTAN TO INSERT KIELBASAS MILLEN Grade turns into a B-.

I’m sure some are expecting something higher than a B-, as Brantley was projected by some to be a second-round choice. However, there are still some glaring issues with Brantley, as he showed up to pre-draft workouts out of shape. There were questions about his work ethic before this, so this has to be a concern for the Browns. Granted, they’re not taking much of a risk because Brantley is a sixth-round pick, but there’s a legitimate chance he could eat himself out of the league before long.

  2. Baltimore Ravens: Chuck Clark, CB/S, Virginia Tech: C Grade
Chuck Clark was a borderline draftable prospect for me who never made an apperance in my mock draft. He’s versatile in that he can play both cornerback, safety and special teams, but he doesn’t have a true position. He’ll just be a backup and special-teamer.

  3. Seattle Seahawks: Mike Tyson, S, Cincinnati: C Grade
The Seahawks are certainly taking a bite out of the safety position in this class, as this is the third such player they’ve selected. I had Mike Tyson going in the seventh round, so this is a tad early for him. I’m just not sure why the Seahawks need so many safeties, but maybe Seattle envisions him as a special-teams star.

  4. New York Jets: Elijah McGuire, RB, Louisiana-Lafayette: A- Grade
The Jets are quietly having a stellar draft, as they’ve traded down a bunch to pick up lots of resources, which they desperately needed. Elijah McGuire is a value selection, as I had him going off the board 50 selections earlier than this. McGuire tested poorly during the pre-draft process, but he’s an effective pass-catching weapon coming out of the backfield.

  5. Los Angeles Rams: Tanzel Smart, DT, Tulane: B- Grade
Tanzel Smart was a productive player for Tulane for several seasons, but tested extremely poorly at the combine. He should still be able to become a decent rotational player for the Rams, but doesn’t have much upside.

  6. Los Angeles Chargers: Sam Tevi, OT, Utah: B Grade
The Chargers needed to continue to bolster Philip Rivers’ protection, and Sam Tevi could do that. Tevi is a lengthy blocker, but lacks athleticism. Still, he could be a decent swing tackle for the Chargers.

  7. Dallas Cowboys: Xavier Woods, S, Louisiana Tech: A Grade
I had the Cowboys selecting Xavier Woods in the fourth round, so I love this value. Woods is an athletic player with great play-making ability, so he could start for Dallas at some point. He’s not a great tackler, but that’s his only real blemish.

  8. Carolina Panthers: Alexander Armah, FB, West Georgia: D Grade
I’m not sure why Alexander Armah was drafted. He wasn’t anywhere close to being on my board, and there were several better fullbacks available.

  9. Cincinnati Bengals: Jordan Evans, LB, Oklahoma: B+ Grade
The Bengals had to find a linebacker, and Jordan Evans is a decent one at this juncture. Evans is very athletic and could be a coverage specialist for the Bengals in sub packages. I don’t see him as an every-down player, but there’s a slight chance he could end up becoming one.

  10. Miami Dolphins: Vincent Taylor, DT, Oklahoma State: B+ Grade
I had Vincent Taylor going off the board 24 picks earlier than this. Taylor is a pass-rushing specialist, as he notched seven sacks in 2016, a solid number for a player at his position. Taylor needs to improve in run support, but he’ll be a rotational player in the meantime.

  11. Buffalo Bills: Tanner Vallejo, LB, Boise State: B+ Grade
I projected Tanner Vallejo to be chosen near the end of the fifth round, so there’s a bit of value here for him. The Bills wanted to add another linebacker, and they found one who is a speedy player. This is a solid pick.

  12. New Orleans Saints: Al-Quadin Muhammad, DE, Miami: D Grade
I get the idea of trying to hit a home run late in the draft, but Al-Quadin Muhammad is a terrible pick. Muhammad had numerous off-the-field incidents in Miami, and then he tested poorly during the pre-draft process. Even if Muhammad makes the roster, there’s no guarantee he’ll be able to stay out of trouble.

  13. New York Jets: Jeremy Clark, CB, Michigan: B+ Grade
Jeremy Clark may have snuck into the second day of the draft had he not sustained a torn ACL in September. Clark dropped all the way to Round 6, but the Jets are getting decent value with him. He has the potential to emerge as a starter in 2018, but the durability concerns are real.

  14. San Francisco 49ers: D.J. Jones, NT, Ole Miss: B- Grade
This pick would’ve made more sense had the 49ers still been running the 3-4. D.J. Jones can stuff the run pretty well, but with poor athleticism, he doesn’t project to becoming a potent pass-rusher. Still, he makes sense in this range as a role player.

  15. Washington Redskins: Chase Roullier, C, Wyoming: C+ Grade
Center makes sense for the Redskins, as Spencer Long is an impending free agent after this season. However, I didn’t think Chase Roullier, a poor athlete, was going to be drafted, making this a bit of a reach. I don’t hate this pick though.

  16. New York Giants: Adam Bisnowaty, OT/G, Pittsburgh: A- Grade
Adam Bisnowaty has a wrestling background, which some teams like in their linemen. Unfortunately, Bisnowaty lacks any sort of athleticism, so he may have to move to guard. Still, Bisnowaty is a smart, powerful lineman, and I thought he would go a round earlier than this. I like this pick, as Bisnowaty potentially fills a need at guard.

  17. Minnesota Vikings: Bucky Hodges, TE, Virginia Tech: A+ Grade
I love this pick in the sixth round, even though the Vikings didn’t need a tight end. Hodges is still learning how to play the position, but he has major potential because of his excellent athleticism. The Vikings are swinging for the fences here, as Hodges could be a solid starter at some point. He could also do nothing, but getting someone who could’ve snuck into the second day this late seems like a great move.

  18. San Francisco 49ers: Pita Taumoepenu, DE, Utah: C- Grade
I didn’t have Pita Taumoepenu being drafted, as he’s an undersized tweener (6-1, 243) who has seven career starts at Utah. If he doesn’t make it on special teams, he’ll be out of the league quickly.

  19. Denver Broncos: De’Angelo Henderson, RB, Coastal Carolina: B Grade
This pick makes sense, as the Broncos needed depth at running back, especially after trading Kapri Bibbs. De’Angelo Henderson was productive at Coastal Carolina, especially as a pass-catcher, and he has some solid athleticism. He could become Denver’s No. 2 running back at some point.

  20. New York Jets: Derrick Jones, CB, Ole Miss: B Grade
The Jets are swinging for the fences here, which is fine. Derrick Jones has elite athleticism, but not very much production. He has starter potential, but could also fail to make the roster.

  21. Detroit Lions: Jeremiah Ledbetter, DE, Arkansas: B- Grade
I didn’t have Jeremiah Ledbetter getting drafted, but I easily could have, as Ledbetter is a long-armed defensive end with solid athleticism. He didn’t have the greatest production at Arkansas, but he has potential.

  22. Los Angeles Rams: Sam Rogers, FB, Virginia Tech: A Grade
Wow, the Rams made a great pick! Sam Rogers was the best fullback in this draft, yet wasn’t the first player taken at his position somehow. Rogers will help Todd Gurley, and he’ll also serve as a Kyle Juszczyk-type pass-catching weapon coming out of the backfield.

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Brandon Wilson, CB, Houston: B Grade
Brandon Wilson wasn’t very productive as a cornerback at Houston, but he has terrific athleticism and return ability. It’s unclear if he’ll see the field much as a defender for the Bengals, but he could definitely make an impact on special teams.

  24. Arizona Cardinals: Johnathan Ford, S, Auburn: B+ Grade
Johnathan Ford is still relatively new to playing safety, as he’s a former running back. However, he performed well at Auburn and then went on to post strong testing numbers. Ford was at his best on special teams in Auburn, so the Cardinals undoubtedly selected him so that he could help them in that regard. I had him off the board 26 selections earlier than this, so there’s some value.

  25. Washington Redskins: Robert Davis, WR, Georgia State: B+ Grade
Robert Davis has the potential to emerge as a starter in the NFL. He was highly productive at Georgia State and then tested extremely well at the combine. He played at a small school, but Davis has great athleticism. He’s a very nice pick for the Redskins, who needed a receiver to replace free agency departures.

  26. Seattle Seahawks: Justin Senior, OT, Mississippi State: C Grade
This is a strange pick by the Seahawks. They typically swing for the fences in the late rounds, but Justin Senior has no upside. He’s a poor athlete, and he struggled at the Senior Bowl as well. It wouldn’t surprise me if he failed to make the roster, but at least Seattle is trying to fill a need.

  27. New England Patriots: Conor McDermott, OT, UCLA: B+ Grade
I had the Patriots selecting Conor McDermott with the 183rd-overall pick. He posted a great 3-cone time at the combine, which had to appeal to them. They’ll need tackle depth if Nate Solder departs, so this pick makes sense and also provides solid value.

  28. Green Bay Packers: Kofi Amichia, G/OT, South Florida: C Grade
With several guards hitting free agency after this season, I thought the Packers would address the position earlier than this. I also thought they’d obtain a better player than Kofi Amichia. I didn’t have Amichia getting drafted, and he wasn’t on my board. He played tackle in South Florida, but will need to learn a new position in Green Bay.

  29. Pittsburgh Steelers: Colin Holba, LS, Louisville: C- Grade
I’m not a fan of selecting a long-snapper in the sixth round. It’s like taking a kicker before the last round of your fantasy league. Long-snappers can be found on the street, so it’s seventh round or UDFA for me.

  30. Philadelphia Eagles: Elijah Qualls, NT, Washington: A Grade
I had Elijah Qualls being chosen much earlier than this, as I slotted him at the end of the fourth round. Qualls was a highly productive player at Washington. He didn’t test well during the pre-draft process, but he projects as a run-stuffing specialist with a bit of pass-rushing ability. The Eagles lost Bennie Logan, so it’s not out of the question that Qualls could take over his spot at some point.

  31. Detroit Lions: Brad Kaaya, QB, Miami: B+ Grade
Brad Kaaya would be the top quarterback prospect in this class if he could play seven-on-sevens with a clean pocket the whole time. Unfortunately for Kaaya, that’s not realistic. He has zero pocket awareness, so he has a lot of work to do if he wants to be a viable quarterback in the NFL. He does have the potential though, so I like the Lions picking him with the idea of trading him if they can develop him.

  32. Dallas Cowboys: Marquez White, CB, Florida State: B+ Grade
I slotted Marquez White at the end of the fifth round, so the Cowboys are getting some value at this spot. It makes sense for them to select yet another cornerback, given their colossal need at the position. White isn’t very athletic, and he’ll struggle in run support, but he had some nice tape at Florida State and has nice size (6-0, 194). This is a solid pick.

  33. Tennnessee Titans: Corey Levin, G, UT-Chattanooga: C Grade
I had Corey Levin as a fringe draftable prospect, so I’m not a fan of taking him at the end of the sixth round. It’s not the worst thing, but Levin will need to translate his skills from 1-AA to the NFL. He could be a decent backup at best.

  34. Kansas City Chiefs: Leon McQuay, S, USC: B Grade
Secondary help is always welcome, especially in the form of an athletic player with upside. Leon McQuay has that, but he’s also going to frustrate with his poor tackling ability. Still, he’s worth a shot here, as he fits the range.
