Live 2020 NFL Draft Grades: Round 5

These Live 2020 NFL Draft Grades will be posted minutes after each pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2020 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | NFL Draft Team Grades

  1. Cincinnati Bengals: Khaleed Kareem, DE, Notre Dame – B Grade
This is a solid pick by the Bengals to open Round 5. They needed another edge rusher, and they’re getting a player who was productive and has nice upside.

  2. Seattle Seahawks: Alton Robinson, DE, Syracuse – C Grade
This is a bit of a reach, as I had Alton Robinson in the seventh round. He’s just a middling talent who has a lot of work to do to make an NFL roster. Seattle could’ve done better, but at least this might fill a need.

  3. Indianapolis Colts: Danny Pinter, G, Ball State – A Grade
The Colts have a great offensive line, and they just added to it in the fifth round. Danny Pinter generated some buzz right before the draft. He’s an athletic player who could become a starter at some point.

  4. New York Giants: Shane Lemieux, G, Oregon – A+ Grade
What a steal from the Giants. Shane Lemieux was a second-round prospect who happened to fall for reasons unknown. I look forward to hearing about why in Charlie Campbell’s Why the Slide, but there’s no doubt that the Giants improved their offensive line with this pick.

  5. Los Angeles Chargers: Joe Reed, KR, Virginia – C- Grade
Joe Reed is a kick returner only. I can’t see him playing on offense, but he should be able to help on special teams. The Chargers could have drafted him a round later though.

  6. Carolina Panthers: Kenny Robnson, CB/S, XFL – A+ Grade
This may not mean much, but Kenny Robinson shut down the best receiver in the XFL when that league was happening. Robinson was once considered a first-round prospect, but decided to play in the XFL. The Panthers are potentially getting a great steal.

  7. San Francisco 49ers: Colton McKivitz, OT, West Virginia – B- Grade
Here’s more tackle help in the wake of Joe Staley’s retirement. Colton McKivitz, however, is a right tackle only. He’s pretty stiff and seems like he doesn’t have much upside, but he could end up being a solid backup.

  8. Miami Dolphins: Jason Strowbridge, DE/DT, North Carolina – B Grade
I’m not sure about Jason Strowbridge’s fit into a 4-3, but he’s a talented player who should have been chosen in the fourth round, or maybe even at the end of the third frame. I like his potential, but I’m not sure about the fit.

  9. Chicago Bears: Trevis Gipson, DE, Tulsa – B+ Grade
Thank goodness Ryan Pace didn’t draft another tight end. Trevis Gipson was a highly productive player from Tulsa who possesses good athleticism. He has nice potential, and there’s a chance he could become a starter across from Khalil Mack once the Robert Quinn experiment fails.

  10. Washington Redskins: Keith Ismael, C/G, San Diego State – C- Grade
Keith Ismael is someone I had in and out of my mock draft once I released my sixth and seventh rounds. He’s versatile, as he can play both guard and center, but he’s not ready for the NFL. His strength is lacking, but the athleticism is there for him to potentially make the roster eventually.

  11. Jacksonville Jaguars: Daniel Thomas, S, Auburn – D Grade
Daniel Thomas was not someone I expected to be drafted. He should be a good special-teamer, but it’ll be difficult for him to contribute well on defense.

  12. New York Jets: Bryce Hall, CB, Virginia – A+ Grade
Bryce Hall would have been chosen in the third or even second round if it wasn’t for some major injury concerns. Hall may not make it because of poor durability, but he’s very much well worth the gamble here in the fifth round. He could end up starting for the Jets if he can stay healthy.

  13. New England Patriots: Justin Rohrwasser, K, Marshall – BELICHICK’S DOG Grade
What… If you’re going to draft a kicker in the fifth round, which is too early for a kicker, why not select the best kicker? And why pick a kicker over a potential starting quarterback. This is horrible. Bad dog! Bad!

  14. Cleveland Browns: Nick Harris, C, Washington – A Grade
Nick Harris lacks length, but most interior offensive linemen do, so that’s not a huge deal. Harris is a solid player I thought could’ve gone in the third round, so the Browns are getting solid value at this spot.

  15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Tyler Johnson, WR, Minnesota – B+ Grade
Tyler Johnson seems like the sort of receiver Tom Brady likes playing with. Johnson is a solid route runner who should be able to eventually take over as the third receiver, replacing Breshad Perriman.

  16. Washington Redskins: Khaleke Hudson, LB/S, Michigan – B Grade
Will Khaleke Hudson play linebacker or safety? Ask one team, and they may tell you something different than the next. Hudson is a good player, but he’s a tweener. Still, he’s a fine pick in the fifth round.

  17. Chicago Bears: Kindle Vildor, CB, Georgia Southern – B Grade
Kindle Vildor helped himself with a strong combine, and I had him slotted in this range. Chicago’s secondary wasn’t as good as it was in 2018 because of Bryce Hall’s departure, and there’s a chance Vildor could end up starting in the slot.

  18. Miami Dolphins: Curtis Weaver, DE/OLB, Boise State – B Grade
Curtis Weaver is one of those players who is highly productive in college, but can’t get it done in the NFL because of skill limitations. I’ll be rooting for him, but he’s not a steal as some people would deem him. I had him in the fifth round, so I’m fine with this selection.

  19. Jacksonville Jaguars: Collin Johnson, WR, Texas – C+ Grade
Collin Johnson was a player I had in the second round of my mock draft long ago, but he kept dropping and dropping because of concerns of lacking athleticism and separation ability. It’ll be tough for Johnson to stick in the NFL, but he has good size at least. I don’t hate this pick, but it could’ve been better.

  20. Detroit Lions: Quintez Cephus, WR, Wisconsin – D Grade
Speaking of receivers who can’t separate, Quintez Cephus is not a player I had mocked in most of my updates. I think I had him undrafted most of April. He was productive at Wisconsin, but he doesn’t look like an NFL player to me.

  21. Buffalo Bills: Jake Fromm, QB, Georgia – B Grade
Wow, Jake Fromm went to an AFC East team, but it wasn’t the Patriots. The Bills needed competition behind Josh Allen for the No. 2 spot, and Fromm could end up being the backup. Fromm, who was the worst quarterback at the combine except for Shea Patterson, possesses no upside, but he’s smart and has a high floor as a reserve.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: John Hightower, WR, Boise State – B Grade
The Eagles picked Jalen Reagor and traded for Marquise Goodwin, but they’re still adding speed to their offense. John Hightower is a speed threat, but will struggle to come down with contested catches until he gets stronger. He was considered a fifth-round prospect, so this is a decent pick.

  23. Minnesota Vikings: Harrison Hand, CB, Temple – D- Grade
I never placed Harrison Hand into any mock draft I ever published. He’s a physical corner, but is too slow for the NFL. I don’t see him making the 53-man roster.

  24. Baltimore Ravens: Broderick Washington, DT, Texas Tech – B- Grade
This isn’t an exciting pick, as Broderick Washington is just a two-down run stuffer who provides nothing as a pass rusher. It makes sense to take him in the middle of Day 3.

  25. Houston Texans: Isaiah Coulter, WR, Rhode Island – B Grade
Isaiah Coulter made a big mistake by declaring for the 2020 NFL Draft, though he couldn’t have known that he wouldn’t be able to help himself because of the pandemic. Coulter is very raw, but has some good athleticism and speed. He’s a project, but he could pay off for the Texans.

  26. Detroit Lions: Jason Huntley, RB, New Mexico State – D- Grade
Jason Huntley wasn’t on my radar as a draftable prospect. He was productive at New Mexico State, but that’s not going to translate to the pros. Huntley is too small (5-9, 193).

  27. Chicago Bears: Darnell Mooney, WR, Tulane – C Grade
I don’t know why the Bears traded up for Darnell Mooney. He’s someone I rarely had in my mock. He has potential, however, as a potentially potent downfield threat. Still, it didn’t seem necessary to give up a resource for him.

  28. Tennessee Titans: Larrell Murchison, DT, N.C. State – B+ Grade
It can’t be a surprise that Mike Vrabel drafted someone who will help him bully other teams around in the trenches. Murchison can get to the quarterback well, so he’ll be able to play passing downs for the Titans. I had him a bit earlier than this, so I like this pick.

  29. Green Bay Packers: Kamal Martin, LB, Minnesota – C- Grade
The Packers needed linebacker help, but they could’ve done better than this. I’ve had Kamal Martin in the seventh round as a special-teamer. His instincts as a linebacker are terrible, so he’ll have to play on fourth down only unless he really takes to coaching.

  30. Minnesota Vikings: K.J. Osborn, WR, Miami – D Grade
K.J. Osborn isn’t someone I ever had in my mock draft. His athletic ability is a huge question mark, so despite some decent route-running ability, he may have to just stick on special teams.

  31. Kansas City Chiefs: Mike Danna, DE, Michigan – D- Grade
I didn’t think Mike Danna would be drafted. He spent one year at Michigan, where he logged three sacks. Danna is someone who could’ve been acquired as a UDFA.

  32. Denver Broncos: Justin Strnad, LB, Wake Forest – D Grade
I didn’t have Justin Strnad in my mock draft. There are some injury issues, and his instincts aren’t very good. The Broncos could’ve drafted a better player.

  33. Dallas Cowboys: Bradlee Anae, DE, Utah – A+ Grade
What a steal at the end of Round 5! Bradlee Anae dominated the Senior Bowl, showing some promising pass-rushing ability. He should’ve been chosen much earlier than this.
