The New York Giants became the first team to fire their general manager because of the 2017 season. Along with Jerry Reese, head coach Ben McAdoo was also fired, so the new general manager will have an immediate critical hire to make for the Giants. WalterFootball.com reached out to sources around the NFL to do a survey on whom the Giants should hire to be their next general manager. This included multiple general managers, college scouting directors, and some team presidents.

  • Houston Texans director of college scouting Jon Carr
  • Houston Texans assistant director of college scouting Mike Martin
  • Green Bay Packers director-football operations Eliot Wolf
  • Green Bay Packers senior personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith
  • Atlanta Falcons assistant general manager Scott Pioli
  • Former Tennessee Titans director of college scouting Blake Beddingfield
  • Los Angeles Rams director of college scouting Brad Holmes
  • Pittsburgh Steelers pro personnel coordinator Brandon Hunt
  • Philadelphia Eagles assistant director of college scouting Tre Brown
  • Seattle Seahawks co-director of player personnel Trent Kirchner

According to the league sources, the common characteristic for all of the evaluators listed above was an eye for talent. Carr and Martin have been instrumental in building up the Texans to have three winning seasons with two division titles before injuries wrecked the 2017 season. Wolf and Highsmith have been vital to the Packers’ string of playoff teams. Pioli helped rebuild the Falcons from picking in the top 10 to almost winning the Super Bowl last year. Beddingfield helped build up the Titans’ roster to Tennessee being in position to make the playoffs this year. Holmes and Brown did the same thing in Los Angeles and Philadelphia respectively. Kirchner has been critical to the sustained success for Seattle this decade.

The Giants have a critical decision to make as the new general manager will be the in charge of rebuilding a team and finding the next franchise quarterback for New York. Another common link of the teams above is they all have a good franchise quarterback, so these evaluators have shown a history of success and come widely recommended from around the league.
