While the majority of the NFL media and fans have been focused on the new head coaching hires, the scouting community has been very interested in the front office changes as two general manager jobs are open and there could be more movement of franchise architects. League sources tell me one top candidate to keep an eye on is Buffalo Bills director of player personnel Dan Morgan. A former Pro Bowl and All-Pro linebacker, Morgan could become a hot general manager candidate in the immediate future.

Currently, Washington and Cleveland have openings at general manager after Bruce Allen and John Dorsey left those teams respectively. In league circles, there are steady whispers new Redskins head coach Ron Rivera might try to hire away Panthers general manager Marty Hurney, which could open up a spot with Morgan’s old team.

Morgan was a first-round pick by Carolina – 11th overall – in the 2001 NFL Draft after a stellar collegiate carer at Miami. After his Pro Bowl career helped the Panthers reach their first Super Bowl, Morgan started out in the Seahawks’ scouting department, working his way up from pro scout to assistant director of pro personnel and to then director of pro personnel.

New Bills general manager Brandon Beane brought Morgan to Buffalo, and the Bills have become one of the most talented young teams in the NFL. Sources say Morgan has been an essential component in the good drafts and free agency acquisitions that have built a strong core, leading the Bills to a 10-win season and playoff appearance with second-year quarterback Josh Allen. The team put together by this front office should have the Bills playing in many more January games in the years to come.

With only one more head coaching position open, the front office dominoes will start falling in place and Morgan could be one of the top general manager candidates in short order.
