A year ago, WalterFootball.com was first to report that the Houston Texans would be receiving a third-round compensation pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. This year, WalterFootball.com has heard from multiple sources that the Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins will be receiving third-round compensation picks for the 2019 NFL Draft. There could be others teams receiving that level of compensatory pick as well, but at this time, Carolina and Washington are the ones that sources have said are receiving those picks.
The Redskins receiving a compensation pick was expected around the league after they lost starting quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency almost a year ago. Cousins got a huge contract from Minnesota, and the Redskins did not sign enough free agents to offset that. Carolina also lost a starter to a big contract, and that was guard Andrew Norwell who signed with Jacksonville.
Both the Redskins and Panthers had promising 2018 seasons derailed by injuries to their starting quarterbacks and along offensive lines. According to league sources, each team will now have an extra third-round pick to help address their depths.
