2010 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Daryl Washington

Strengths:
  • Freakishly long arms (33 3/4)
  • Ideal closing speed
  • Covers a ton of space in coverage
  • Sideline-to-sideline range
  • Quick twitch athlete
  • Very instinctive and anticipates
  • Aggressive with a mean streak
  • Quick hips – smooth athlete
  • Highly productive on special teams – 4 career punt blocks
  • Very good footwork and technique
  • Doesn’t miss many tackles
  • Stepped up as a leader
  • Voted team captain
  • Will lay the wood
  • Good ball skills
  • Very talented with significant upside

    Weaknesses:
  • Tends to avoid taking on blocks
  • Struggles to stack and shed
  • Needs to bulk up and get stronger
  • Only 15 career starts – lacks some experience
  • Won’t fit every scheme
  • Needs to work on gap responsibilities

Summary: Washington is a highly talented player who is athletic and makes plays all over the field. Teams such as Minnesota, Indianapolis, Philadelphia and St. Louis are likely to have Washington rated higher on their boards than most teams because they either play a lot of zone and value speed. He projects strictly as a WILL linebacker in the 4-3 defense with versatility on special teams – I think he is a little too small at the moment to play inside. Washington is projected to go off the board in the top 75 picks.

Player Comparison: Geno Hayes. Hayes is an athletic WILL who has outstanding athleticism and range. He’s very good on special teams for Tampa.
