  • Summary: Over the past three seasons, Overshown was one of the most consistent linebackers in the Big XII. He established himself as a starter for the Longhorns in 2020 with 60 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and seven passes broken up. A year later, Overshown recorded 74 tackles, two passes broken up and two sacks. He could have entered the 2022 NFL Draft, but he was viewed as more of a mid-rounder. Teams felt Overshown needed to get stronger and tougher for taking on blocks because there were plays in 2022 on which he got rocked by offensive linemen. In his final season, Overshown showed improvement in terms of strength and toughness while recording 95 tackles, four sacks and five passes broken up.

The passing-driven NFL game leaves a linebacker with Overshown’s coverage potential in demand, so plenty of teams are hoping to land him. Overshown is a talented zone-coverage linebacker with good instincts that lead him to glide around the field, and he does an excellent job of reading routes while spying the eyes of the quarterback to disrupt passing lanes. Overshown’s background as a safety can be seen with his natural ability to cover in the middle of the field. There is no doubt that Overshown is extremely fast and has sideline-to-sideline speed.

With his length, speed and athleticism, he has man-coverage potential on tight ends. It would be wise to give him some practice reps and coaching before going man-to-man on NFL tight ends, but in time, he could be a useful weapon to help neutralize receiving tight ends.

Overshown also brings added value as a blitzer. He had a burst to eat up ground and can be a hard charger who dodges blockers while flying to the quarterback. Overshown may not blitz a lot in the NFL because of his coverage skills, but when he does blitz, he could be effective at harassing the signal-caller.

As a run defender, Overshown is a solid. He showed an improved ability to take on blocks in 2022 and was stronger. Still, he will need to improve at taking on and shedding blocks for the pro level, but he has the potential to do that. Overshown does a good job of closing ground in pursuit and working his way through trash. His tackling isn’t bad, but he could stand to be coached up in the NFL.

For the next level, Overshown looks looks like a versatile linebacker who could play on the inside of a 3-4 defense. He also would fit well in a 4-3 defense as a Mike – middle – linebacker, or he could play Will – weak side – linebacker.

Team sources say they expect Overshown to go on the second day of the 2023 NFL Draft. They think he could be a second- or third-round pick.

Player Comparison: C.J. Mosley. Overshown and Mosley have slightly different body types, but Overshown’s coverage skills are reminiscent of what Mosley did for Alabama. Mosley (6-2, 250) grew into being a well-rounded defender and got stronger. Overshown could fill out his frame in a pro strength and conditioning program to end up even more similar to Mosely.
