2020 Senior Bowl: Wednesday’s North Team Practice Report

By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

The second practice of the North team in the Senior Bowl was held in Mobile, Alabama in Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The players practicing in full pads. The North team is being coached by the Detroit Lions coaching staff.

  • Utah State quarterback Jordan Love is the top trigger man on the North team, but he had another uneven practice on Wednesday. Love showed off he has a strong arm and is able to loft in passes downfield with some good placement at times, but he definitely needs refinement for the NFL.

Love had some rough moments in the team scrimmage, including plays where he didn’t see the field well. On one play, he stared down a receiver running across the field and threw too high for an incompletion that would have been a dangerous throw for a potential interception in a normal NFL setting. Throughout the team scrimmage, Love was throwing the ball a second late and holding on to it a bit long when he had his receiver already open. His anticipation definitely needs to get faster to deliver the ball more quickly to help his pro offensive line. Holding on to the ball like that will lead to sacks at the next level.

While Love had those issues, he also threw some ropes into tight windows including a slant to Michael Pittman Jr. against Oregon’s Troy Dye. He had an accurate pass up high for a completion to Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mimis downfield along the sideline. He had another well-placed pass for a completion to Ohio State wide receiver K.J. Hill.

There is no doubt that Love has a very good skill set with special arm talent, but his field vision is a crushing weakness at this time. He is going to need developmental time in the NFL and should not be forced into the starting lineup immediately.

  • USC wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. had a mixed practice. He was better in the team scrimmage, but in the early going did not impress. Pittman needs to improve his ability to get off jams in the NFL. As a pro, he is a big possessional receiver who does not have game breaking speed, so getting physical and winning the fight at the line of scrimmage is critical for him to become a starter at the next level.

  • Ohio State wide receiver K.J. Hill is a polished route-runner with good hands, quickness and quality size. Hill does the little things well and looks like he could make a quick contribution in the NFL. Hill is able to generate separation from feet with sharp cuts and some twitch out of the break. While Hill may not be a first-round pick, this analyst thinks he could be a steal on Day 2.

  • Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson struggled on Tuesday and had another rough practice on Wednesday. He had a number of balls batted, his placement was off at times, and he struggled to see the field. This week has illustrated that Patterson is probably more of a priority free agent rather than being a late-round pick.

  • There was an interesting play in the team scrimmage where Liberty wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden got open running deep along the sideline with a step on Wake Forest cornerback Essang Bassey, but Gandy-Golden let a well-thrown pass from Patterson bounce off his hands for an incompletion. While it was bad that he dropped ball, it looked for Gandy-Golden that he was quick enough to get separation from Bassey. Speed is the big question for the giant wideout, so that play helps him to a degree. Gandy-Golden has to run well at the combine and in pre-draft workouts to rise.

  • Oklahoma defensive tackle Neville Gallimore had another good practice. Gallimore is a quick interior rusher who can get upfield and give interior blockers problems in pass protection. Gallimore could be a good fit as a three technique in a 4-3 defense with the potential to be a steal on Day 2 of the draft. He could be the next Grady Jarrett.
