Jerks of the Week: Hospital for Childbirth, Part 1
I’d like to thank everyone for congratulating me on the birth of my son, Conrad. I posted that my wife was pregnant on the picks page back in September just to alert everyone that there would be one week, presumably around Christmas, that would be slow for me because that’s when we were expecting. Conrad was due on Christmas, but like his father, he was late to an important occasion. He was eventually born on New Year’s Eve. Aside from us and family, no one was happier about this than my accountant, who messaged me that evening, “You’re getting the child tax credit! Congratulations!”
I won’t go into the private details of this amazing event, but I would like to discuss some of the jerks I encountered during our five-day, four-night stay at the hospital.
We drove to the hospital the Wednesday after Christmas where they would begin the induction. We had to call in advance to see if there was a bed available. Luckily, there was one, so we didn’t have to try this at home. The woman on the phone gave instructions to my wife on how to get to the maternity ward.
“Go in through the normal entrance of the hospital and go behind the desk and follow the Yellow Brick Road,” she said.
The “Yellow Brick Road,” eh? I expected to see pictures of The Wizard of Oz or actual yellow tiles on the ground, but when we arrived, there were no such things. I asked the man at the front desk how we could get to maternity.
“Just go behind the desk and follow the Rainbow Road,” he said.
Why can’t there just be a sign that says, “Go here to get to the maternity ward?” Why does there have to be a Yellow Brick Road or a Rainbow Road? And if the latter was the path we were destined to follow, should we have been concerned about dodging Koopa Troopa’s green shells trying to knock us over the edge?
It turns out there was a rainbow painted on the floor, which we followed to the elevators. Once we rode up to the fourth floor, we sat down with the secretary overseeing the maternity ward. As my wife was giving her information to the secretary, I noticed a sign on the glass:
“Have you traveled abroad? If so, please keep everyone safe and wear a mask!”
My wife and I were both wearing masks because we thought it was required for the hospital, but this made me believe otherwise. I immediately took off my face diaper and pointed the sign out to my wife, who didn’t know what to make of it. She continued to wear her mask until we got to our room.
It’s still mind-boggling to me that some places are enforcing mask wearing. I’ve shown this to you many times, but the warnings on the mask boxes specify that they don’t block the Fauci virus:
If, however, you are forced into wearing a mask by an agent of the state, I’d suggest two strategies beyond just leaving:
1. Tell them that you’re wearing a mask that you haven’t washed in “about a year.” Make the authoritarian goon feel as uncomfortable as possible.
2. Whenever you need to breathe, lift the mask below your nose and mouth, take a deep breath and then exhale before pulling your mask back to where it was. If the agent of the state tells you to stop doing this, say, “I’m wearing my mask, you f**king piece of s**t, and if you have a problem with how I’m breathing, I’ll rip your throat out and feed it to the pigs.” Make sure you shout this with your mask down at your chin as you spit into their eyes.
Fortunately, the nurses didn’t really enforce any sort of mask-wearing at the hospital for the most part. I had to wear a mask in the operating room, but that made sense. There were a couple of nurses who said, “I personally don’t care, but there are some nurses here who will want you to wear a mask.” They must have been referring to a blubbery beast of a nurse who, on our third night at the hospital, walked into the room and announced that we had to wear our masks. I did not listen, but my wife did. The nurse then handed her some medicine, so my wife took off her mask and popped the pills into her mouth.
I couldn’t help but laugh. The fat nurse made such a big deal about her wearing a mask, and yet my wife took off the mask five seconds after putting it on to ingest the medicine. It made no sense. It’s like these dumb restaurants that ask you to wear a mask before you sit down at the table. Apparently, the Fauci virus has an aversion to restaurant tables, which is why it hovers at an elevated height, but only in restaurants.
Speaking of the Fauci virus, the nurses gave my wife a Fauci virus test as soon as she got to her room. I was expecting to take one as well for the first time, but they didn’t administer one to me. Perhaps this was an oversight, but I was confused about why they would test my wife and not me. If my wife were positive for Fauci’s sniffles, they would still have to deliver the baby, but would obviously do so in a secluded area. If I were positive, however, they would send me home and require another support person come to aid my wife, like her mom or her sister. And yet, they didn’t check if I was positive!
I had mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I was relieved not to get kicked out of the hospital because I was already on thin ice with my mask policy. On the other hand, if this was an oversight, what else would these nurses miss? Besides, I’ve seen all of those cool people line up for hours to get tested for the Fauci virus. I’m not dumb enough to live in a big city, so I haven’t been able to experience this. I wanted to know what it would feel like if I had to wait for hours to get tested for the sniffles if I didn’t have any symptoms. Yet, these nurses wouldn’t even give me that pleasure. As you can tell, our stay at the hospital was not off to a good start.
I thought about it, and I came to realize that I wasn’t given the Fauci virus test because of what my friend Body Burner told me. Body Burner’s daughter was born in September, and he told me, “They treat the husbands like second-class citizens at the hospital. You’ll have to fend for yourself. You won’t be given a comfortable place to sleep, and you’ll have to find your own food.”
When my wife and I packed a hospital bag, I asked her if I could bring a gun with us so that I could go out and hunt game during the day for food. She told me I was being ridiculous, but I wasn’t so sure. I planned on secretly stashing the gun in the bag, but forgot about it, unfortunately.
I ate heavily before we went to the hospital, so I wasn’t hungry that night. Sleeping proved to be a problem, as Body Burner stated. There was a reclining chair by my wife’s bed, so when she fell asleep, I extended the legs. The problem was that there was no logical place to put my head, save for the armrests, so I would have to contort my body like a candy cane in order to sleep.
It’s safe to say that I did not get enough rest. I think I dozed off for a half hour each time, but was constantly awakened because of neck pain. By morning, I could hardly move my neck at all. It was tough to consume the Pop Tart I brought with me.
With the induction process ongoing, my wife and I did nothing the second day at the hospital except watch reruns of mindless sitcoms like Big Bang Theory, The George Lopez Show and Family Matters. The latter reminded me of something from my past. I told my wife that nearly two decades ago, I used to write a comic strip called Family Matters 2000, which included nonsensical plot lines like Carl Winslow opening up a Red Lobster chain but eating all the food before opening, and Carl Winslow banishing little Richie into the woods for eating his special doughnut. It was at this point that my wife asked for something for the pain. I didn’t know if it was related to the pregnancy or my Family Matters 2000 comic strip.
My wife passed out shortly after the injection, and I dozed off again as well. I slept longer this time because by the time I awakened, it was dark outside. I was starving. We had some chips packed with us, but I wanted real food. I checked for the gun, but immediately kicked myself for forgetting it. There wasn’t anything I could create a weapon with either, so I couldn’t MacGyver anything into a bow and arrow, a boomerang or a bomb. Thus, I would not be eating any animals on this night.
I wandered out into the hallway and stopped by the front desk. I asked the lady there if there was a cafeteria, but she said it had closed an hour ago. I asked if there was any way I could find some food, and she directed me to the vending machines. I decided on some beef jerky, Doritos and cookies. Thus, I’d have all the food groups except for fruits and vegetables.
Despite the healthy choices, it was gross eating that stuff for dinner, and after I woke up again after dozing off once more, I felt malnourished. I finally knew what malnourished kids from third-world countries felt like.
At any rate, nurses were eventually in our room as the birthing time would soon arrive. One of them pulled me aside and said, “You should eat now so you have something in your stomach.” I assume she said this because she felt as though I was one of these pansy husbands who passes out during childbirth.
I replied, “OK, I’ll go to the vending machine and get more beef jerky, Doritos and cookies.”
She looked at me like I was an idiot.
“You do know that three meals are included with your stay, right?” she asked. “You can just call down and they’ll bring you anything you’d like.”
I was blown away, and even more so when she handed me a menu. I looked at all the breakfast choices. They had French toast, pancakes, bagels, bacon, ham, cheese omelets and more. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
“So I don’t have to go foraging for food here?” I asked. She laughed and shook her head.
I couldn’t even decide what I wanted. That’s how overwhelmed I was. I thought about ordering one of everything. It was all free, after all!
Again, my mind was blown. Going into the hospital, I thought I would be subjected to tests, forced to wear a mask, get pushed off the Rainbow Road by Koopa Troopa, and even starve to death. Instead, I had complete freedom from tests and masks, and I was able to order all the delicious free food I wanted while watching TV.
This all begs the question: Why would anyone ever want to leave this magical place?
