Why Undrafted?: Reggie White Jr.

Why Undrafted?: Reggie White Jr., WR, Monmouth
By Charlie Campbell, @draftcampbell

Five years ago, we started a series of articles on why certain prospects went undrafted. In that series, I reach out to sources with NFL teams to find out why their organizations passed on drafting a given player, and/or, what were the reasons for other teams to pass on that prospect. We got a lot of positive reader feedback about the series, so we decided to expand in the genre to investigate why some prospects slid in the draft. Three years ago, we started the Why the Slide? series, and this year it is back. Feel free to email me requests for Why the Slide? and Why Undrafted? at [email protected]. I can’t promise to get to all of them, but I will do my best and definitely will respond to the email.

During the leadup to the 2019 NFL Draft, Reggie White Jr. became a prospect who enjoyed some media buzz to go along with some pre-draft visits with NFL teams. White shares a name with one of the greatest players in NFL history, but he is not related to the late great Reggie White, who was one of the best defensive ends to ever play the game. Former Monmouth wide receiver Reggie White Jr. is the son of a former NFL player who played four years with the Patriots, Jets and Chargers. Reggie White Jr. set records at Monmouth, and many thought he would get selected on the final day of the 2019 NFL Draft, but White went undrafted.

The reason White went unselected accoring to sources from multiple teams was that White did not grade out as a draft-able player. They had him graded as a priority undrafted free agent, so they felt it was appropriate that he was not selected in the 2019 NFL Draft.

After going undrafted, White signed with the New York Giants, and that was a good landing spot for him. They are looking for play-makers to help replace Odell Beckham Jr., so there should be an open competition at wide receiver. Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate are the only established receivers on the roster. Corey Coleman and Cody Latimer were big busts for the teams that drafted them. White will compete with them and Bennie Fowler for a roster spot. If White can show a quick rapport with rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, that would be huge for White to earn a roster spot. The Giants were a good choice for White to sign with as he has a wide open opportunity to make it in the NFL with them.
