2020 NFL Scouting Combine Team Thoughts on Workouts

Jake Fromm, QB, Georgia 
Jake Fromm got off to a bad start at the combine, as his 8 7/8-inch hands were the second-smallest among all quarterbacks, beating out only Kevin Davidson’s from Princeton. That wasn’t enough to sink his status, and Fromm certainly had a boost from his positive interviews. However, Fromm struggled in the passing drills. He looked like he had the weakest arm of all the quarterbacks at the combine. Fromm seems destined for the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon 
Justin Herbert had such an excellent combine that some are discussing the possibility that he has passed Tua Tagovailoa. I wouldn’t go that far, but there’s no doubt that Herbert was terrific in the passing drills.
Jordan Love, QB, Utah State Jordan Love is getting tons of hype. He was terrific in the passing drills during the Thursday portion of the combine, delivering precise deep throws to his receivers. Daniel Jeremiah spoke about the potential of Love being chosen in the top 10 of the 2020 NFL Draft. Again, I wouldn’t necessarily buy into the hype; NFL team sources called Jordan Love the most overrated prospect in this class. The NFL combine tends to be a dog-and-pony show for quarterbacks, and Love’s weaknesses – his inability to make reads and his poor pocket awareness – wouldn’t be prevalent in the drills. Still, there’s no doubt that Love looked great as a pure passer.
Steven Montez, QB, Colorado Steven Montez struggled mightily at the Senior Bowl, so he really needed to rebound in Indianapolis. He did so, as he passed very well in the drills. As with Jordan Love, however, Montez’s weaknesses weren’t going to be exposed at the combine. Still, it was nice to see Montez’s draft stock move in a positive direction.
James Morgan, QB, Florida International James Morgan was the best quarterback at the East-West Shrine Game by a mile, and his positive momentum continued at the combine. He showed good accuracy in the drills, and he was also one of the standouts in the formal interviews. NFL teams came away very impressed with Morgan, who now has a chance to sneak into the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Shea Patterson, QB, Michigan The NFL combine is made to help quarterback prospects; otherwise, many of them wouldn’t participate. Thus, it’s rare to see someone struggle as badly as Shea Patterson did on Thursday. Patterson was the worst passer at the 2020 NFL Combine. He repeatedly threw behind his targets or overshot his receivers. I’d be shocked if any team drafted him at this point.
Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama Tua Tagovailoa wasn’t able to participate in the physical portion of the combine because of his injury. However, Tagovailoa’s medical was very positive, indicating that he’s well ahead of schedule in his recovery. Tagovailoa also aced the team interviews, which was not a surprise.
