My Thoughts on the 2019 NFL Draft – Live on Draft Day!

What is this? I’ll be posting my thoughts on the 2019 NFL Draft here. That will include everything from the actual picks, to the TV personalities, to the commercials, etc. Anything goes. This page will be updated every five minutes or so, so I hope you join me for the 2019 NFL Draft!

By the way, I’ll be posting live 2019 NFL Draft Grades for individual picks. Overall 2019 NFL Draft Grades will be posted all day Sunday. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

6:25: Might as well start this now! I thought I’d post two props I’m betting on. I’m 5-1 over the past three seasons in betting props, losing only with “Corey Davis Over 17.5 +120.”

This year, I like:

Greedy Williams Over 21.5 -125
Jawaan Taylor Over 7.5 +110

Both of these are on BetUS, and both have $100 limits, unfortunately. Williams has been getting second-round grades, so top 20 seems unlikely. Meanwhile, teams are concerned about Jawaan Taylor’s knee, so he could fall into the 20s.

6:28: DeAngelo Williams and Vince Wilfork were dressed like Batman villains on the red carpet. “We didn’t have the red carpet when we were drafted,” Williams said. Ah, good times. Life was so much better without this stupid pre-draft red carpet.

6:31: I like that Daniel Jones drawing. His first goal was “I want to win a prize for good sportsmanship in football.” High character traits!

6:34: That interview with Jones and Drew Lock made me remember Ryan Tannehill being interviewed prior to his rookie year when it became evident that he didn’t know which division any of the teams were in.

6:37: D.K. Mamula just said that he wants to go to a team in the U.S. I suppose he’s ruled out playing in the CFL once he busts in the NFL.

6:40: While we’re in commercial break, check out my final 2019 NFL Mock Draft. Also, I’ll be posted live 2019 NFL Draft Grades, minutes after each pick. I already graded Kyler Murray to the Cardinals. I wrote up Joey Bosa to San Francisco as well, but that’s not posted there yet.

6:41: My wife got me a standing desk for Christmas. I just tried standing, but my back started hurting after two minutes. I think there might be something physically wrong with me.

6:44: Connor Hughes just reported the Jets and Raiders are discussing a trade where they’d swap the third and fourth picks. This makes so much sense, as Oakland would hate it if Quinnen Williams off the board because the agent who represents Ed Oliver and Josh Allen is the same guy who represents Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper.

6:45: Maybe I’m off base here, but this McGraw guy with the hat is too old to be a draft prospect.

6:48: Nice job by the NFL Network host making fun of Kyler Murray’s suit. These suits are ridiculous. Who the hell even wears suits anymore? If I were being drafted, I’d show up in a t-shirt and gym shorts.

6:51: As a heads up, you have one hour left to enter the mock draft contest (link on the home page.) Enter for free, and win some of my money!

6:54: I’ll be asked this, so I’ll just say that this is Thursday-only. The picks come in too quickly on Friday and Saturday, and I have to grade them. In fact, I often fall behind with the grades, which is the worst part of draft weekend!

6:57: Does anyone else see that Verizon commerical where a guy with a hat and beard rants and raves about Justin Timberlake. Get a life, dude. You’re a grown man. Stop idolizing other grown men. You sound like such a tool.

6:59: I like these Ryan Reynolds commercials. Only because my wife got me addicted to Candy Crush Saga, so I know the feeling. I’m up to Level 1574. I have to say that Level 1573 was absolute horse s**t. I had to use five boosters to beat it.

7:03: Kyler Murray is basically Jon Snow at this point. He knows nothing. I remember the good ole days when we used to know the picks in advance. In fact, if you’re young and don’t know, teams would often have contracts in place with the top choices! The NFL Draft has become a different animal.

7:05: I’m slightly disappointed that the NFL Network didn’t bring in another draft analyst to replace Mike Mayock. Daniel Jeremiah is the best, but Kurt Warner seems like an odd substitute for Mayock. I actually like Warner’s NFL analysis, but the fit here for the draft doesn’t seem right.

7:08: What if the Giants don’t take a quarterback this weekend and instead give an extension to Eli Manning?

7:09: “Eli Manning is getting older.” – Steve Smith. Can’t you say that about everyone? Is anyone getting younger? If so, I’d like to find this person.

7:12: With Dabo Swinney being on TV, it reminded me to tell you all that we’ll be covering college recruiting heavily going forward. I feel like that was the one element of football we were missing, but that’s no longer the case.

7:14: Isn’t it a little awkward for David Shaw that the NFL Network brought in Swinney as an expert guest? It’s like, “David, you’re pretty mediocre at your job; let’s get someone better to talk.”

7:15: Forty-five minutes to go! I’m nervous about my mock draft being screwed up by countless trades. I had the most accurate mock last year, but the 2019 mock could implode with crazy deals and dumb picks.

7:18: Enjoy your sixth night of Zika mosquito stings free at Jamaica!

7:20: I’d say Patrick Mahomes could endure the Madden Curse this year, but maybe he got his bad luck out of the way already when Dee Ford was an inch offside and his team lost the coin toss in overtime.

7:23: I still can’t believe Kliff Kingsbury couldn’t have great success with Mahomes at Texas Tech. That just blows my mind.

7:26: Almost a half hour to go. It feels like an eternity since I wrote that there were 45 minutes remaining. Can’t we just start this thing already?

7:29: If I’m the Cardinals, I just troll the NFL and send out texts to every single prospect, telling them that they’re still in the mix. Hey, Trace McSorley, you’re still in the mix to go No. 1!

7:31: I love Quinnen Williams’ outfit. No joke. It’s all gray; not other color. No tie. Just gray. He looks like he’s traveled back from the year 2153.

7:32: Quinnen Williams just said “God bless you” to himself after sneezing. He truly is from the future.

7:39: Sorry, I had to check if James Holzhaur won Jeopardy again. He did, with $90,000. I’ve never seen anything like it. And to think, he’s a fellow degenerate gambler like me.

7:40: I’m so glad that we didn’t have to endure everyone’s introduction on stage. All of this just seems so unnecessary. Just start the damn draft at 7 p.m., West Coasters be damned.

7:45: Fifteen minutes to go. Just took my last bathroom break before the draft. Hopefully I can make it through the entire night without having to pee again. That’s my goal.

7:49: On an unfortunate, serious note, there’s an audio clip released of Tyreek Hill threatening his fiancee. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Chiefs cut him this weekend.

7:51: “When Eli retires.” Doesn’t it feel like Eli has retired already? He’s still playing, but I think he retired a couple of years ago.

7:52: Ah, I miss Mike Mayock on TV. I was sad when he took the Raiders job.

7:53: Rich Eisen questioning the Lonesome Loser song choice. At least it’s not the Lannister theme song. Though the draft picks getting murdered would make for interesting TV.

7:56: Daniel Jeremiah makes an interesting point that the Cardinals are gift-wrapping a defensive stud to a divisional opponent, but San Francisco was going to get one either way with Nick Bosa or Quinnen Williams. You might as well get a quarterback who actually likes football.

8:00: It’s finally 8 p.m. Enjoy the draft!

8:03: We once had a cold-weather Super Bowl. What if we have a cold-weather draft in the future, where the draft is held outside in Green Bay in February?

8:08: So many people in this crowd. It’s nuts. Remember when the NFL Draft would start on a Saturday afternoon, and barely anyone cared?

8:09: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

8:10: Poor Roger Goodell needed to bring Marcus Mariota with him to stop the booing.

8:11: Oh wow, Jason Whitlock is one of the three finalists.

8:12: Jason Whitlock won NFL tickets for the next 100 years! Yay!

8:13: Is there a consolation prize for the other two contestants? Maybe NFL tickets for the next 75 years?

8:14: The Arizona Cardinals are on the clock!

8:15: For a team being on the clock, the Cardinals sure aren’t doing very much.

8:17: If the Cardinals claim that they didn’t know whom they took today, that video clip of their war room is proof they were lying. They literally weren’t doing anything!

8:19: The Arizona people still aren’t doing anything! You can see one of them playing Candy Crush!

8:20: Kyler Murray looking as bored as the people in Arizona’s draft room.

8:22: Time’s running out, Arizona. Call a timeout to stop the clock!

8:23: The pick is in. Phew!

With the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Cardinals select QB Kyler Murray

8:25: I got a pick right! Yes YES YESSSS!!!

8:25: I wonder what the reporters who thought the Cardinals would pass on Murray have to say about this.

8:26: Assuming Nick Bosa is No. 2, the draft really starts in one more pick.

8:28: The Cardinals tried to call Josh Rosen to explain things, but his safe space didn’t have good reception.

8:29: The pick is in. I’ll be shocked if this isn’t Bosa.

With the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the 49ers select DE Nick Bosa

8:31: The Jets are on the clock. Come on, Raiders! Trade up to get Quinnen Williams!

8:33: If the Jets end up taking Williams, it won’t make much sense to me. It’ll be a good pick, but a confusing one in that their defensive coordinator wanted a different defensive player.

8:35: Adam Schefter said the Jets are desperately trying to trade out.

8:41: Ugh. That was disappointing. What will the Raiders do now? Ed Oliver and Josh Allen are represented by Joel Segal, who happens to be Khalil Mack’s agent.

8:42: We were promised a surprise pick by the Raiders. Maybe this is why. What if it’s someone like Clelin Ferrell or Brian Burns?

8:50: BUHAHAHAHAHAH I CALLED THIS BUT I WAS KIDDING! I WAS ONLY KIDDING!!!

8:54: It’s a good thing the Raiders sent their scouts home, or they couldn’t have made a great pick like this.

With the No. 5 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Buccaneers select LB Devin White

9:00: Blegh. This is going too fast now. I can’t keep up!

With the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Giants select QB Daniel Jones

9:04: Well, I screwed up the Jets’ pick, but I’m 4-for-6 right now, so I guess I’ll take it. Take Jonah Williams, Jags!

9:06: Noooo, the seventh pick is already in. Slow down, people!

With the No. 7 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Jaguars select DE/OLB Josh Allen

9:10: Ugh. I was really hoping Josh Allen would last to the Lions, which is where I had him in my mock. Instead, the Lions can pick Ed Oliver, if they want him, but they’ve drafted nothing but team captains, so I suspect this could be Devin Bush or Brian Burns.

9:15: Ugh again! Stupid Jaguars, why couldn’t you let Josh Allen fall to the Lions!?

9:16: “The Lions have become the Patriots midwest.” I don’t recall Bill Belichick using a top-10 pick on a tight end!

9:17: Congratulations, Bills. You won the draft. You got Ed Oliver.

9:18: Where are all the trades, by the way!? I thought the Jets and Lions were supposed to move down!

9:22: The Bills are used to losing, so this is odd. I can’t believe they got Oliver at No. 9 when they talked about trading up to No. 3 for him!

9:24: “What are the Broncos doing in the war room right now?” Nothing. They’re just sitting there.

9:25: The Broncos are trading back, per reports. Not my reports. Just reports.

9:26: The Steelers have traded up! But I thought they weren’t going to move up, La Canfora!

9:32: Falling behind again. Hopefully this pick is Andre Dillard for my sanity.

9:37: Sigh. Still only four picks correct. If only the Jaguars picked Jonah Williams over Josh Allen. If only…

9:38: Packers pick is in. I wonder if they’ll take Jeff Simmons.

With the No. 12 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Packers select DE/DT Rashan Gary

9:42: What a weird draft. The Jets picked a defensive player their defensive coordinator didn’t want. The Raiders chose a mid-first-round player at No. 4. The Lions, trying to pretend to be the Patriots, went with a tight end in the top eight, and now we have this. I didn’t think the Packers would take a guy who was such a slacker in college.

9:43: Come on, Dolphins, use more of the clock so I can write more dumb things!

9:49: I saw that the Falcons had five minutes remaining, and I got excited because it would give me a chance to write some stuff. So much for that!

9:54: The 2019 NFL Draft should hereby be known as the Inspector Gadget NFL Draft because there are some go-go Gadget reaches so far.

9:55: Time for Dwayne Haskins? I’d love to get a sixth pick correct. Do it for me, Daniel Snyder!

10:02: It happened again! The Panthers had five minutes left, yet they submitted their pick. Hey a**hole teams, wait for me to catch up!

10:03: Go Brian Burns, make it seven correct!

10:07: The Giants have four minutes remaining for me to catch up, so I hope they use all their time!

10:08: I think the Giants want to take an edge rusher, but how do they pass on Andre Dillard to protect Daniel Jones? They almost have to select Dillard, right?

10:13: I’ve had Garrett Bradbury going to the Vikings for a long time now, but how do they pass on Andre Dillard?

10:18: Yay, Bradbury! That’s eight picks correct. Unfortunately, I can’t get my next three picks right, due to other selections and trades.

10:19: I had Dexter Lawrence here. The Titans wanted him. If I were to guess now, I’d say it’s Erik McCoy, but we’ll see.

With the No. 20 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Broncos select TE Noah Fant

10:31: I’ll have to give credit where credit is due. Woody Paige had this. He said the Broncos would trade down for Noah Fant. Woody Paige hates me – he once called me a mushroom living in dank darness (or maybe dark dankness?) – but I’ll give him props for nailing this.

10:33: The Seahawks are trading back. This is not a surprise. They have no second-round pick. However, the Packers are moving up. Maybe for Andre Dillard?

10:41: Eagles move up! Please be for Marquise Brown!

10:47: Am I crazy in thinking that Jordan Mailata is better than Andre Dillard? This pick makes no sense!

10:48: I have a feeling I’m going to be wheeled off into a mental ward at some point, mumbling “Mailata … Mailata … Mailata.”

10:54: I saw someone on Twitter say the Texans would be taking Cody Ford, so they just ruined my night. I will salt their lands and burn their homes for upsetting me.

11:00: I am soooo shocked the Raiders picked Josh Jacobs, woooowww.

11:01: Nice conversation…

Deion: What did your father mean to you?

11:02: Will the Ravens select Ser Elgton!?

11:08: The Redskins have moved all the way up to No. 26! It has to be for a receiver, right? They have nothing at the position. Perhaps it’s Parris Campbell.

11:09: The Colts got a second-round pick next year for this trade! Crazy.

11:16: The poor Raiders missed out on two players they wanted: Quinnen Williams and Montez Sweat. Mike Mayock needs to stop being so stingy with his picks. Trade up, Mike!

11:22: The Chargers are on the clock. Do you think they believed they’d have their choice of Cody Ford or Jawaan Taylor when the night began?

11:24: I just realized I hit both of my prop bets. Yay, I won $200!

With the No. 28 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Chargers select DT Jerry Tillery

11:29: Man, I thought the Chargers would go with Jawaan Taylor if he fell to them. If you’re wondering, Taylor has dropped because teams are concerned about his knee.

11:30: I hope the Seahawks use all 20 minutes here. Maybe they’re reading my draft blog and are hoping for some more nonsensical thoughts from yours truly.

11:32: So, I have nine picks correct. I haven’t checked, but I think Charlie Campbell has a billion picks correct. It seems like he nailed everything. Charlie has proven that he’s the best, but everyone reading this already knew that.

11:33: There’s the Seatte war room. It doesn’t look like anyone is reading my live blog. Damn it, Seahawks personnel, read my live blog!

11:34: My guesses here if the Seahawks don’t move down: N’Keal Harry and Nasir Adderley.

11:35: What if the Seahawks’ 30th pick leap frogs the Seahawks’ 29th pick!?

11:36: See what sort of brilliant and cunning analysis you’re getting if teams would wait? This is awesome!

11:38: Josh Rosen doesn’t need to be dealt tonight, or even this weekend. If I’m the Cardinals, I want a 2020 NFL Draft pick. That class is much better.

12:01: Thank you for reading my incoherent thoughts tonight! And sorry for not being present for chunks of this draft, as the picks came in quickly for the most part. I wish the NFL would start the draft an hour earlier to allow for more coverage, but I don’t know if they’ll make any sort of changes.

12:03: As I said earlier, I can’t do this tomorrow because the picks will come in too quickly. But I’ll continue to post my NFL Draft Grades here tomorrow and Saturday, and I’ll have my team grades throughout Sunday.
