2010 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Derrick Caracter


Position: Power Forward

Size: 6-9, 280

School: UTEP, Junior


Strengths:

Uses his big body to bang around down low

Upper body strength allows him to muscle opponents

Establishing position in the paint

Good touch around the basket

Utilizes hook shot in the lane

Mid-range jumper

Active on the glass



Weaknesses:

Character issues dating back to his days at Louisville

Prone to get into foul trouble

Doesn't run the floor really well

Not very explosive as a leaper

Lacks a great motor

Handling double teams

Summary: After figuring out some maturity issues, Caracter returned to Division I college hoops with a bang putting together an impressive season at UTEP. He may have jumped the gun on turning pro though from a draft standpoint as he will likely be a second-round pick, but could possibly go undrafted.

Player Comparison: Glen Davis. From a physical point of view, Davis and Caracter are very similar in that they know how to throw their body around down low while also having above average athleticism for someone their size. Both players have a nice mid-range game and if Caracter could develop into a role player like Davis has in Boston, it would be a pretty impressive accomplishment.
