2014 Fantasy Football Rankings - Quarterbacks (Aug. 30):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-35

  1. Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers. Bye: 9.
JULY 15: The Packers want to run 75 plays per game this season. As a reference, the Broncos ran the most plays per game in 2013 with 72.1. This move to a much faster-paced offense is great news for Aaron Rodgers and the othe Packer offensive players in terms of fantasy.

Aaron Rodgers played in only eight full contests this past season. If his stats were extrapolated over a 16-game season, they would’ve been 5,072 yards, 34 touchdowns and 12 interceptions (with 240 rushing yards). Rodgers should draw second-round consideration.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,600 passing yards. 37 passing TDs. 10 INTs. 240 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 348.

  2. Peyton Manning, QB, Broncos. Bye: 4.
Those expecting Peyton Manning to duplicate or come close to matching his 2013 numbers will be disappointed. Manning had one of the all-time great years, thanks to an outstanding supporting cast. Eric Decker won’t be around next year, while Wes Welker is slowing down. Emmanuel Sanders was added, so that’s at least something, but an aging Manning will have to battle all of the tough defenses in the NFC West. There won’t be any cupcake NFC East defenses on the slate this time.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,700 passing yards. 44 passing TDs. 11 INTs. 0 rushing yards. 0 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 342.

  3. Drew Brees, QB, Saints. Bye: 6.
Drew Brees has thrown for 5,100 yards or more in the past three seasons. Can he keep it up? Well, an encouraging sign is that he did this despite the team’s improved defense, so he should be able to approach and perhaps exceed the 5,000-yard plateau again, especially with Brandin Cooks on the roster. I wouldn’t expect Brees to repeat his three rushing scores though.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,900 passing yards. 41 passing TDs. 14 INTs. 10 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 339.

  4. Andrew Luck, QB, Colts. Bye: 10.
Andrew Luck matched his touchdown total this past season to his rookie figure, but cut his interceptions in half. This was impressive considering that he was missing Reggie Wayne for half the season. Luck should be able to explode in Year 3 with Hakeem Nicks joining Wayne T.Y. Hilton in what is now a potent receiving corps.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,400 passing yards. 28 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 250 rushing yards. 4 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 311.

  5. Tom Brady, QB, Patriots. Bye: 10.
JULY 24: Tom Brady gets a stock up today because Rob Gronkowski was cleared by doctors. Gronkowski is still a long shot to play all 16 games, but his current availability is terrific news for Brady, who is going too late in fantasy mock drafts.

Tom Brady was certainly the most disappointing fantasy quarterback this past season, as he threw just 25 touchdowns, a figure that dropped by nine from the year before. I previously thought it was a good time to buy low, but Bill Belichick failed to upgrade Brady’s supporting cast. He also spent a second-round pick on Jimmy Garoppolo. Perhaps this will motivate Brady, but he seems too busy sporting blond mohawks and wearing red pants.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,500 passing yards. 33 passing TDs. 12 INTs. 20 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 302.

  6. Matthew Stafford, QB, Lions. Bye: 9.
Matthew Stafford is a turnover machine who has regressed the past few seasons. His mechanics are awful, and the uninspired hire of Jim Caldwell won’t help matters. Stafford will post huge numbers in some games – especially if Eric Ebron develops quickly – but he’s not someone you want to count on come playoff time.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,700 passing yards. 30 passing TDs. 17 INTs. 70 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 289.

  7. Russell Wilson, QB, Seahawks. Bye: 4.
AUG. 17: Russell Wilson was in complete command of the offense versus San Diego. He’s had numerous off-the-field distractions this offseason, but it doesn’t appear as though they’ve bothered him at all. Wilson was a near-perfect 11-of-13 for 121 yards along with 31 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. This doesn’t even include a pass-interference call to Doug Baldwin in the end zone as well as a near-passing touchdown to Baldwin in the second quarter. Baldwin made the grab in the end zone, but couldn’t get two feet inbounds. Wilson, for whatever reason, has been severely underdrafted in fantasy mocks this summer. Make sure you obtain him for great value. He figures to be even better in 2014 with Percy Harvin at his disposal.

Russell Wilson is prone to some stinker fantasy games because his team tends to get way out in front, allowing the coaching staff to take the air out of the ball. However, Wilson bails out his owners more often than not with his rushing yardage. He’ll also have Percy Harvin for the entire season next year (maybe).

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 3,400 passing yards. 26 passing TDs. 15 INTs. 530 rushing yards. 4 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 287.

  8. Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons. Bye: 9.
AUG. 18: Matt Ryan’s stock obviously takes a hit because of Sam Baker’s season-ending injury. It won’t kill his fantasy value or anything, but he’s a bit less appealing. Ryan went 3-of-7 for 37 yards at Houston. He could’ve had a much bigger evening had Julio Jones not dropped a pass down the field along the sideline.

Matt Ryan threw for 4,515 yards in 2013, but committed a career-high 17 interceptions and 21 total turnovers. This past season was just a disaster, with Julio Jones missing 11 games and Roddy White being banged up for half the year. Ryan is an obvious bounce-back candidate, though he won’t have Tony Gonzalez.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,600 passing yards. 29 passing TDs. 14 INTs. 70 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 283.

  9. Tony Romo, QB, Cowboys. Bye: 11.
AUG. 7: Tony Romo has struggled with his deep ball, according to his quarterbacks’ coach. Romo, coming off his second back procedure, may not be 100 percent this year, though he will be throwing quite often because Dallas may have the worst defense in NFL history.

MARCH 10 UPDATE: The Scott Linehan hire is going to increase Tony Romo’s passing volume, so he could have a big statistical year in 2014.

Tony Romo is coming his best touchdown-to-turnover ratio campaign of his career (32:11). He just missed out on 4,000 yards, but only because he was sidelined for the Week 17 loss against the Eagles. He’s unlikely to regress, though there is a bit of concern because he underwent two back procedures this past season.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,550 passing yards. 31 passing TDs. 18 INTs. 40 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 280.

  10. Colin Kaepernick, QB, 49ers. Bye: 8.
AUG. 24: Colin Kaepernick had yet another pedestrian performance against the Chargers, going 6-of-12 for only 59 yards. He also fumbled twice, turning it over once. Kaepernick passed too high for his target on one occasion and struggled with pressure throughout the afternoon. He’s a very risky fantasy pick.

Colin Kaepernick’s fantasy owners had to be very frustrated when they saw the 49er quarterback scramble much more frequently in the NFL playoffs. Kaepernick didn’t do nearly as much running as anticipated in 2013. He later admitted that he’s more likely to scramble in the postseason because it’s a “one and done” situation. That’s smart, but it doesn’t help in terms of winning your fantasy league.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 3,400 passing yards. 23 passing TDs. 14 INTs. 500 rushing yards. 5 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 280.
