2015 Senior Bowl: Denzel Perryman Interview

Last year a record number of juniors entered the 2014 NFL Draft and many of them made a regrettable decision as over half of them went undrafted. One prospect who didn’t make that mistake and decided to wait on the NFL while improving their draft stock with another season of college football was Miami linebacker Denzel Perryman. After a quality sophomore year, Perryman was improved as a junior. In his senior year he was even better as he became a well-rounded player for the Hurricanes. As a result, Perryman is one of the top inside linebacker prospects for the 2015 draft. Walter Football caught up with him at the Senior Bowl.
Who are some of the teams you’ve met with thus far at the Senior Bowl?
“The Raiders, Packers, Broncos, Chiefs, Falcons, Browns, I talked to Tampa Bay. I met with Chip Kelly (Eagles head coach).”
Are there any teams that you feel have shown more interest in you than others?
“I’ve been hearing I’m big on Oakland’s board and on Denver’s board. Also Green Bay and the Dolphins.”
In speaking with scouts at end of your senior year, they told me they saw you as a potential late first round or second-round pick. How does that compare to what you heard last year when you sought the advice of the NFL Draft Advisory Board?
“Last year, they were saying late second or early third. I don’t know what round I’ll go in and I hear a lot of things, but I pretty much don’t give it much attention.”
What do you see as your strengths entering the NFL?
“I feel like my tackling ability. My recognition of the run fits. I feel like my run game and tackling.”
I think you improved your pass defense a lot as a senior. Is that something you’re working to answer any doubts for the next level?
“Before I came up here, I was doing workouts with a strength and conditioning coach and other skill work. They had Takeo Spikes come and work with us on all that. We worked that a lot here and I’m working it non-stop.”
At Miami, you guys played a lot of 3-4 this year after employing a 4-3 a year earlier. How do you feel about the schemes and your fit in the NFL?
“Like you said, I played both in college and I feel like I can do both in the NFL. Either scheme is good for me and I’m happy with either one.”
You have some offensive teammates that should go in the early rounds of the draft in left tackle Ereck Flowers and running back Duke Johnson. How was it going against them in practice?
“Again, like you said, they’re some of the best in the country at their position. Every day we got better going against them. Either trying to get by or off a block from Flowers or trying to tackle Duke, so they really made me better. I think they would say the same thing about me.”
