2011 NFL Mock Draft: Round Five

Last update: Thursday, April 28, 2011, 3:30 PM. Final update.
Next update: Thurs evening. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

This 2011 NFL Mock Draft order is based on the official 2011 NFL Draft Order.

  1. Carolina Panthers: Julius Thomas, TE, Portland State
The Panthers just signed Jeremy Shockey, but they need a long-term answer at the position. The Saints drafted a basketball player to groom behind Shockey, and I’d say that worked out pretty well.

    MISSING

  2. Buffalo Bills: D.J. Williams, TE, Arkansas
Shawn Nelson has been a big disappointment at tight end. Buffalo needs to give Andy Dalton an intermediate weapon to work with.

  3. Cincinnati Bengals: Robert Sands, S, West Virginia
The Bengals could stand to upgrade the safety position. Robert Sands is a great fit for Mike Zimmer’s scheme.

  4. Kansas City Chiefs: Delone Carter, RB, Syracuse
Kansas City acquired this selection from Tampa Bay for Alex Magee.

Thomas Jones, 33 in August, is owed $3 million in 2011. He wasn’t very effective this past season, so even though the Chiefs said they plan on bringing him back, that could be a smokescreen of some sort. If so, Delone Carter would be a very cheap alternative. Carter has drawn some comparisons to Maurice Jones-Drew.

  5. Arizona Cardinals: Mario Harvey, ILB, Marshall
The Cardinals can use an upgrade at the inside linebacker position. Daryl Washington just had a great year, but all Arizona has next to him is a soon-to-be 34-year-old Paris Lenon.

  6. Cleveland Browns: Pernell McPhee, DE, Mississippi State
If the Browns pass on Robert Quinn at No. 6, they’ll be looking for help at defensive end. They really need 4-3 personnel; their top end option is Matt Roth. That’s not good news because he’s only started nine games in a 4-3 as a pro.

  7. Houston Texans: Chris Conte, S, California
The Texans will be moving Glover Quin to free safety. They’ll need an alternative option just in case that doesn’t pan out.

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Niles Paul, WR, Nebraska
If Sidney Rice leaves Minnesota via free agency, the team will obviously need to find a new starter across from Percy Harvin.

  9. Kansas City Chiefs: Ian Williams, NT, Notre Dame
Scott Pioli needs his Vince Wilfork. If he doesn’t take Phil Taylor at No. 21, he’ll have to somehow secure a nose tackle in Rounds 2-5.

  10. San Francisco 49ers: Owen Marecic, FB, Stanford
The 49ers are definitely looking for help at the fullback position this offseason. Jim Harbaugh brings over his guy from Stanford.

  11. Tennessee Titans: Kris O’Dowd, C, USC
The Titans need to upgrade left guard and center. Unfortunately, the center class is very thin this year.

  12. Dallas Cowboys: Marcus Cannon, G, TCU
The Cowboys reportedly like Marcus Cannon. Or at least they did prior to the unfortunate biopsy. Cannon is now a late-round prospect who will have to sit out a year. Let’s hope he can make a comeback and thrive in 2012.

  13. Washington Redskins: Cecil Shorts, WR, Mount Union
As noted in the first round, Sanatana Moss is a free agent. Anthony Armstrong cannot be the No. 1 receiver next year.

  14. St. Louis Rams: Ugo Chinasa, DE, Oklahoma State
Chris Long had an incredible season, but the Rams need a pass-rusher on the other side of the line of scrimmage. James Hall is also coming off a great year, but he just turned 34. St. Louis will need to find a long-term successor soon.

  15. Miami Dolphins: Bilal Powell, RB, Louisville
It sounds as if the Dolphins will be going after DeAngelo Williams in free agency. If that’s the case, they’ll still look for a running back late in the 2011 NFL Draft.

  16. Jacksonville Jaguars: Tyrod Taylor, QB, Virginia Tech
The Jaguars are expected to select a quarterback relatively early in the 2011 NFL Draft; they need a long-term solution at the position because David Garrard is too inconsistent.

Tyrod Taylor is the type of high-character, blue-collar, multi-year starter that Gene Smith covets.

  17. Oakland Raiders: Derek Newton, OT, Arkansas State
Langston Walker will be a free agent this offseason. The Raiders need to upgrade an offensive line that surrendered six sacks to the Steelers.

  18. Philadelphia Eagles: Alex Green, RB, Hawaii
The Eagles acquired this selection from the Chargers for the Cam Thomas pick.

Jerome Harrison is a free agent, so the Eagles could be in the market for a replacement. Philadelphia has shown interest in Alex Green.

  19. Minnesota Vikings: DeAndre McDaniel, S, Clemson
The Vikings need to upgrade both safety positions this offseason. DeAndre McDaniel is one of the top talents available.

  20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Dion Lewis, RB, Pittsburgh
If the Buccaneers don’t retain Cadillac Williams, they’ll need a new third-down, change-of-pace back behind LeGarrette Blount. Tampa likes Dion Lewis.

    MISSING

  21. Indianapolis Colts: Kendric Burney, CB, North Carolina
When you’re battling the Patriots, Chargers and Steelers every year, you can always use as many talented corners as possible.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Henry Hynoski, FB, Pittsburgh
It’s really a shame that Leonard Weaver tore his ACL and PCL, and suffered nerve damage in his knee. If the Eagles don’t think Owen Schmitt can replace him, they may look for a fullback in the middle rounds this April.

  23. Detroit Lions: Jake Kirkpatrick, C, TCU
Detroit desperately needs to upgrade its offensive line this offseason to keep Matthew Stafford healthy. Jake Kirkpatrick would fill a huge void at the center position.

  24. Washington Redskins: Rashad Carmichael, CB, Virginia Tech
Washington acquired this pick from the Saints in the Jammal Brown trade.

Carlos Rogers and Phillip Buchanon are both free agents. Replacements are needed here if either one walks.

  25. Seattle Seahawks: Da’Norris Searcy, S, North Carolina
Pete Carroll watched Greg Olsen torch Lawyer Milloy in the playoffs, so I’m sure he’ll want better safety play in 2011.

  26. Seattle Seahawks: Stephen Burton, WR, West Texas A&M
The Seahawks acquired this selection from the Ravens for Josh Wilson.

Mike Williams, Golden Tate and Deon Butler are nice targets, but none of them are No. 1 receivers. The Seahawks need to find a reliable top option. Stephen Burton has immense upside, so maybe be could evolve into Seattle’s No. 1 wideout.

  27. Atlanta Falcons: Dwayne Harris, WR/KR, East Carolina
The Falcons might double dip at receiver. They need to find as many weapons as possible for Matt Ryan.

  28. New England Patriots: Buster Skrine, CB, UT-Chattanooga
The Patriots can’t have guys like Kyle Arrington and the disappointing Darius Butler seeing a ton of action at corner. I know Leigh Bodden is due back next year, but he’s a 30-year-old injury-prone player.

New England has shown interest in Buster Skrine.

  29. Chicago Bears: DeMarcus Love, OT/G, Arkansas
The Bears need as many upgrades on the offensive line as possible. If they lead the NFL in sacks allowed again, Jay Cutler probably won’t make it through another season.

  30. New York Jets: Joseph Barksdale, OT, LSU
Vladimir Ducasse will be moving over to right tackle. There’s no guarantee that’ll pan out, so here’s some competition for him.

Pick change; previously Lawrence Guy, DE/DT

  31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Zach Hurd, G, Connecticut
Another offensive line upgrade for the Steelers. They can’t afford to have Ben Roethlisberger knocked around on every play once again.

  32. Green Bay Packers: Stephen Schilling, G, Michigan
Daryn Colledge is a free agent, but needs to be upgraded anyway. Stephen Schilling fits the scheme and appearance the Packers like from their offensive linemen.

  33. Baltimore Ravens: Chris Hairston, OT, Clemson
Jared Gaither missed the 2010 season with back injuries. Depending on what happens with the CBA, Gaither will probably be a free agent. If the Ravens don’t retain him, they’ll need a replacement.

  34. Baltimore Ravens: Rick Elmore, DE/OLB, Arizona
The Ravens have met with a bunch of rush linebacker prospects this offseason, including Rick Elmore, which might indicate that they’re not happy with their depth behind Terrell Suggs and Jarret Johnson.
