2011 NFL Mock Re-Draft: Round Two

Last update: Friday, April 29, 2011, 3:20 PM.
This is a 2011 NFL Mock Re-Draft of Rounds 2 and 3 for Friday evening’s NFL Draft coverage. With all of the trades that will go down, I don’t expect to get many of these right; in fact, I’ll be thrilled if I nail one or two correctly. But it’s still fun to speculate where the top prospects will go on Day 2 of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

  1. New England Patriots: Jabaal Sheard, DE/OLB, Pittsburgh
Knowing the Patriots, they’ll probably trade this pick and acquire their third 2012 first-rounder. Bill Belichick is a genius.

I had Akeem Ayers here Friday morning, but I’m changing this selection to Jabaal Sheard three hours prior to the second round. I’m hearing the pick might be Sheard if New England stays put.

    MISSING

  2. Buffalo Bills: Andy Dalton, QB, TCU
The Bills are seemingly interested in a quarterback. Think back to the infamous Andre Reed Tweet-gate. Or the fact that Christian Ponder tweeted “Buffalo” on Wednesday. The best quarterback available is Andy Dalton, and the Bills have shown interest in him. Chan Gailey coached Dalton in the Senior Bowl.

  3. Cincinnati Bengals: Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
The Bengals have missed out on all the West Coast quarterbacks, but that’s fine; Mike Brown wants Carson Palmer back, and passing on signal-callers can be some sort of an olive branch.

Da’Quan Bowers was once a popular projection to Cincinnati prior to the Combine. The Bengals have shown interest in him, so maybe they’ll take a chance on his questionable knees.

  4. Denver Broncos: Stephen Paea, NT, Oregon State
The idea behind drafting Von Miller No. 2 is that the Broncos can obtain a defensive tackle atop the second round. Their idea; not mine.

In this case, Stephen Paea fills a huge need for them.

  5. Cleveland Browns: Aaron Williams, CB/FS, Texas
The Browns weren’t able to obtain Patrick Peterson, so they’ll have to find a cornerback in Rounds 2-4. Joe Haden had a great rookie year, but Cleveland possesses nothing across from him.

Aaron Williams is one of the top players available. The Browns have shown interest in him.

  6. Arizona Cardinals: Brooks Reed, DE/OLB, Arizona
Cardinals beat writer Kent Somers, who was all over the anti-Blaine Gabbert bandwagon before anyone else, Tweeted late Thursday night, “Don’t know if the Cardinals can wait another round to address pass rush.”

That’s quite understandable. Joey Porter and Clark Haggans really embarrassed themselves this past year, combining for just 10 sacks and struggling in run support.

Brooks Reed is the perfect choice here. He’s a late first-round talent and Arizona has shown interest in him.

  7. Tennessee Titans: Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina
Nick Fairley was projected to go to the Titans for a reason. Fairley wasn’t the pick, but Tennessee can grab a defensive tackle in Round 2. Marvin Austin happens to be one of the top players available.

  8. Dallas Cowboys: Rahim Moore, FS, UCLA
New free safety Alan Ball was a pretty big liability this season. The Cowboys need to upgrade this position unless they want DeSean Jackson torching them twice every year.

Rahim Moore is one of the top players available, and Dallas has shown interest in him.

  9. Washington Redskins: Colin Kaepernick, QB, Nevada
Mike Shanahan will draft a quarterback. Did you see Chris Berman’s reaction when the Redskins drafted Ryan Kerrigan? He looked like he was having a stroke.

Colin Kaepernick has unlimited upside. He also possesses the mobility that Shanahan likes out of his quarterbacks.

  10. Houston Texans: Akeem Ayers, DE/OLB, UCLA
The Texans wanted Aldon Smith, but the 49ers grabbed him at No. 7. They can obtain their rush linebacker here.

  11. Minnesota Vikings: Kyle Rudolph, TE, Notre Dame
Teams that draft quarterbacks early usually spend their next selection on an offensive lineman or play-making weapon for that signal-caller. Think Sam Bradford-Rodger Saffold, Matthew Stafford-Brandon Pettigrew and Matt Ryan-Sam Baker.

The Vikings are looking for a tight end, so they may grab the 2011 NFL Draft’s top tight end for Christian Ponder.

  12. Detroit Lions: Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia
Detroit’s issues at the cornerback position are well-documented. They inexplicably passed on Prince Amukamara, so they’ll have to get creative in Rounds 2 or 3.

Ras-I Dowling is one of the top players available, and the Lions have shown interest in him.

  13. San Francisco 49ers: Randall Cobb, WR/KR, Kentucky
The only quarterback remaining is Ryan Mallett, but I don’t see him fitting Jim Harbaugh’s West Coast offense.

Randall Cobb is one of the best players available and will provide some much-needed speed that San Francisco’s offense currently lacks.

  14. Denver Broncos: Benjamin Ijalana, OT/G, Villanova
The Broncos need a new right tackle. Ryan Harris is a free agent, but he’s a poor fit for John Fox’s power blocking scheme.

Ben Ijalana recently had a great Pro Day, and there was some speculation that he could sneak into the first round. Denver has shown interest in him.

  15. St. Louis Rams: Torrey Smith, WR/KR, Maryland
St. Louis’ No. 1 goal this offseason is to find a play-maker for Sam Bradford. The Rams could not get anything downfield in the ugly season finale at Seattle because of their abysmal receiving corps. Drafting someone like Torrey Smith would fix that.

Smith has shaky hands, but is otherwise a very talented, blue-collar player who would be a great fit in St. Louis.

  16. Oakland Raiders: Stefen Wisniewski, C/G, Penn State
As Greg Cox wrote in his 2011 NFL Mock Draft, Stefen Wisniewski makes a ton of sense for the Raiders. His uncle Steve played 13 seasons for Al Davis, qualifying for the Pro Bowl eight times. Steve was recently hired as an assistant coach.

  17. Washington Redskins: Leonard Hankerson, WR, Miami
A weapon for Colin Kaepernick. The Redskins can’t go into the 2011 season with Anthony Armstrong as their top receiver.

  18. San Diego Chargers: Brandon Harris, CB, Miami
Cornerback isn’t San Diego’s greatest need, but the team needs depth at the position. Plus, Brandon Harris is one of the top players available. The Chargers have shown interest in him.

  19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Lance Kendricks, TE, Wisconsin
The Buccaneers are absolutely in love with Lance Kendricks. They won’t think twice about taking him in the third round, and they may even consider him in Round 2. They’re concerned with Kellen Winslow Jr.’s blocking and durability.

  20. New York Giants: Mikel Leshoure, RB, Illinois
The Giants love taking the best player on their board, and that could be Mikel Leshoure in this scenario.

Brandon Jacobs’ days in New York are numbered, and the coaching staff is not confident in Ahmad Bradshaw’s ability to stay healthy for a whole season.

    MISSING

  21. Indianapolis Colts: Rodney Hudson, G/C, Florida State
Another offensive line upgrade for the Colts, whose No. 1 priority this offseason is to improve Peyton Manning’s pass protection.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Jaiquawn Jarrett, S, Temple
It doesn’t appear as though free agent Quintin Mikell will be back with the Eagles next year. If Mikell signs elsewhere, the Eagles will need a new strong safety because Kurt Coleman should not be a starter.

I know I mocked Jaiquawn Jarrett to the Eagles in the third round of a previous update, but I’m getting the sense that he could be the second safety off the board on Friday. The Eagles have shown a ton of interest in him.

  23. Kansas City Chiefs: James Brewer, OT, Indiana
The Chiefs wanted Nate Solder, but he was selected four picks in front of them. They may grab a right tackle with one of their three Day 2 selections.

  24. New England Patriots: Ryan Williams, RB, Virginia Tech
I had Ryan Williams here for the Saints, but this works just as well for the Patriots. New England reportedly really likes Williams, who would instantly upgrade a mediocre backfield.

  25. Seattle Seahawks: Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
I really need to put Ryan Mallett somewhere. Maybe Pete Carroll will think Mallett is just too good to pass up this late in the second round.

  26. Baltimore Ravens: Titus Young, WR, Boise State
The Ravens need an upgrade at receiver, particularly a downfield threat to stretch the defense. Titus Young, one of the top players available, could become Baltimore’s version of Mike Wallace.

  27. Cleveland Browns: Jerrel Jernigan, WR, Troy
The Browns passed on Julio Jones, but you can’t blame them because they received a boatload of picks from the Falcons. They can grab Colt McCoy’s receiver at this spot.

  28. New England Patriots: Will Rackley, OT/G, Lehigh
An offensive lineman with versatility, Will Rackley makes a ton of sense for the Patriots at the bottom of Round 2.

Protecting Tom Brady is Belichick’s first priority. Stephen Neal announced his retirement, so New England will be looking for a guard in free agency or early in the 2011 NFL Draft.

  29. San Diego Chargers: Martez Wilson, LB, Illinois
San Diego has a bunch of free agent inside linebackers. A.J. Smith will likely target a replacement or two in the 2011 NFL Draft. Martez Wilson is one of the top players available.

  30. Chicago Bears: Allen Bailey, DE, Miami
Bears fans chanted “DaQuan Bowers” at the end of the first round. Well, they can get their defensive end here.

  31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Curtis Brown, CB, Texas
The Steelers passed on Aaron Williams at No. 31. That’s fine, because they can use this selection on a cornerback. They’ve shown interest in Curtis Brown.

  32. Green Bay Packers: Jarvis Jenkins, DE/DT, Clemson
Mike McCarthy recently spoke in the past tense when referring to Cullen Jenkins. Johnny Jolly, meanwhile, was just arrested for drug possession. The Packers really have to look into acquiring a new defensive end.
