2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Major changes in all 5 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
As mentioned in the Jacksonville Jaguars 2013 NFL Team Needs, there seems to be something wrong with every Jacksonville cornerback. Derek Cox is an injury-prone free agent. Aaron Ross isn’t any good. Rashean Mathis is old. William Middleton is about to hit the market as well. Sixth-round rookie Mike Harris played decently until Tom Brady exposed him in Week 16. The new front office needs to find a new No. 1 cornerback.

Johnthan Banks had an awful Combine, but he fits perfectly into Gus Bradley’s system as a tall, lanky corner.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. San Francisco 49ers: Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
San Francisco acquired this pick from Kansas City last week. Go here for the grades I’ve given both the 49ers and Chiefs in the Alex Smith trade.

The 49ers’ defense looked lost defensively when Justin Smith got hurt last year. Unfortunately for San Francisco, Smith will be 34 several months following the 2013 NFL Draft, and he’ll also be entering his walk year. Injury insurance and an eventual replacement are needed.

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State
Chip Kelly said there would be competition at the quarterback position. He probably meant between the signal-caller he just retained, Dennis Dixon and whomever he drafts in Round 2 or 3. As mentioned earlier, I can’t see Nick Foles staying on the roster; he doesn’t fit the offense, and the Eagles can get a third-rounder at the very worst for him.

E.J. Manuel is the best fit for Kelly’s offense out of the signal-callers available at this juncture.

  4. Detroit Lions: Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State
Both of Detroit’s starting outside linebackers are set to hit free agency. Help will obviously be needed if either Justin Durant or DeAndre Levy walk away.

Arthur Brown fits the Lions’ “best player available” strategy. I wanted to slot him at the end of the first round but couldn’t find a spot for him.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina
BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 100-plus yards in four of the five games prior to Pittsburgh, but that’s mostly just great blocking rather than the Law Firm improving. One of the Bengals’ top priorities is finding a capable running back. Giovani Bernard would complement Green-Ellis very well.

  6. Arizona Cardinals: Kyle Long, OT/G, Oregon
This is a pretty obvious selection. The Cardinals have pressing offensive line issues that they’ll absolutely need to resolve this offseason. If they want to keep first-rounder Geno Smith healthy, they’ll need to find multiple upgrades up front.

Pick change; previously Tyler Bray, QB

  7. New York Jets: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
The Jets need to give their next quarterback some weapons to work with. Both the receiver and tight end positions need to be upgraded. Running back must be addressed as well. Shonn Greene’s a free agent, but he wasn’t very good anyway. Eddie Lacy is the top player available.

Pick change; previously Matt Barkley, QB

  8. Tennessee Titans: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
Chris Johnson finally regained CJ2K form in the final weeks of the season, but that doesn’t mean the Titans can’t use an upgrade or two on the offensive line. Help is needed on the interior. Larry Warford was dominant at the Senior Bowl.

Pick change; previously Darius Slay, CB

  9. Buffalo Bills: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
General manager Buddy Nix told the media that he would probably trade up for a quarterback this April. Maybe this is what he meant. I doubt Matt Barkley will last this long, but Buffalo could easily move into the 25-35 range to obtain him.

Pick change; previously DeAndre Hopkins, WR

  10. Miami Dolphins: Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
With each passing day, it’s becoming more evident that Jake Long will not be back with the Dolphins next year, as the two teams just can’t seem to agree on a price. If Long leaves, Miami will have to find a new right tackle, as Jonathan Martin will move over permanently to the blind side.

Pick change; previously Menelik Watson, OT

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State
The Buccaneers failed to land a cornerback in the first round of this mock draft update, so they’ll need to do so in the second round. Their secondary is an abomination.

Pick change; previously Manti Te’o, LB

  12. Carolina Panthers: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
Panthers’ head coach Commander Adama hinted that signing Mike Wallace is a possibility this spring. It’s at least an indication that Carolina is looking to upgrade the receiver position. If the team can’t get Wallace, perhaps it’ll use an early selection on a wideout.

Pick change; previously Matt Elam, S

  13. San Diego Chargers: Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State
Both Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason will be free agents in March. The Chargers will have to find some reinforcements at cornerback if they lose either defender. A case could be made that Jamar Taylor is the best player available.

Pick change; previously Alex Okafor, DE/OLB

  14. St. Louis Rams: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Lance Kendricks had an issue with drops as a rookie. He resolved that in 2012, but he didn’t exactly establish himself as a potent threat. The Rams could be looking for a new tight end. Remember, this regime has no allegiance to Kendricks.

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Bennie Logan, DT, LSU
The Cowboys need personnel for Monte Kiffin’s 4-3 defense. Defensive tackle was already a priority, but now it has to be considered the top need after Jay Ratliff idiotically was arrested for a DWI. You’d think he would have known better after Josh Brent killed a teammate of his in a December drunk driving accident, but Ratliff apparently has no brain cells. There’s a good chance he’ll be released this offseason. I don’t know how Jerry Jones can keep him. First of all, it’s a terrible PR move to do so, and second, Ratliff has been very sluggish since signing a $48 million contract in September of 2011.

Pick change; previously Tank Carradine, DE

  16. Pittsburgh Steelers: Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame
Manti Te’o had a miserable Combine. He ran a 4.82 40 and later blamed it on fatigue (as if the other players weren’t tired). He looked stiff in the drills. Worst of all, he drew that ridiculous press conference. Te’o handled himself well in front of the media, but the press conference itself was the major problem. No team wants to deal with the media circus that will come with acquiring Te’o.

The Steelers, as they always do, catch a falling prospect. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently reported that the Steelers could be targeting an inside linebacker early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Larry Warford, G

  17. New York Giants: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
Marvin Austin has shown nothing thus far in his career, so the Giants may bring in another young defensive tackle with Rocky Bernard set to hit free agency.

Pick change; previously Bennie Logan, DT

  18. Chicago Bears: David Bakhtiari, OT/G, Colorado
If you’ve watched Jay Cutler take a beating throughout this past season, you know that they need to find multiple upgrades for their struggling offensive line. The versatileDavid Bakhtiari is arguably one of the top players available.

Pick change; previously Kyle Long, OT/G

  19. Washington Redskins: Matt Elam, S, Florida
Here’s some much-needed help for the Redskins’ secondary, as both safety positions need to be addressed. Brandon Meriweather cannot be relied upon to stay healthy, and it’s not like he was a Pro Bowl talent anyway. Madieu Williams, meanwhile, needs to be upgraded because he’s not any good.

Pick change; previously Kyle Long, OT/G

  20. Minnesota Vikings: John Jenkins, NT, Georgia
The Vikings can address one of their biggest needs with the best player available. Defensive tackle is a huge issue right now; Kevin Williams will turn 33 in August, and there’s no one of note playing next to him. Letroy Guion is a decent rotational guy but should not be a starter. John Jenkins is too good to pass up at this juncture.

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Connecticut
Cincinnati just drafted Dre Kirkpatrick in the first round last year, but an early cornerback selection is still in play because the team has zero cornerback depth. That’s a problem because Mike Zimmer loves having three corners on the field.

Pick change; previously Blidi Wreh-wilson, CB

  22. Miami Dolphins: Alex Okafor, DE/OLB, Texas
Cameron Wake is the only player on this roster who consistently gets pressure on the quarterback, and that simply can’t be the case if you’re trying to unseat Tom Brady and the Patriots in the AFC East.

Pick change; previously Jamar Taylor, CB

  23. Green Bay Packers: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
Greg Jennings will be a free agent in March. He’s proven to be unreliable in terms of staying healthy, so he won’t be back. The Packers consequently may target a receiver early in the 2013 NFL Draft. Terrance Williams is one of the top players available in this situation, so I doubt Ted Thompson would hesitate to pluck him off the board.

  24. Seattle Seahawks: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
The Seahawks’ receiving corps really needs to be upgraded. Sidney Rice is constantly laboring through injuries and has struggled to get any sort of separation for most of the season. Golden Tate, meanwhile, is way too inconsistent, though he was better at the end of the season. Russell Wilson kept improving every week, so it would only help him more if Pete Carroll decided to bolster his wideout corps.

  25. Houston Texans: Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama
I’ve been told that John Jenkins is a strong option for the Texans at No. 27 if they can’t land one of the two SEC linebackers. If Houston wants to upgrade the nose tackle position, perhaps it’ll look at Jesse Williams in Round 2.

  26. Denver Broncos: Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
John Elway highlighted the receiver position as one of the areas he plans on upgrading this offseason. That’s hardly a surprise, given that Peyton Manning doesn’t have much to work with outside of Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker.

Pick change; previously Ryan Swope, WR

  27. New England Patriots: David Amerson, S/CB, N.C. State
Aqib Talib is a free agent, while second-year Alfonzo Dennard could spend some time in prison after striking a police officer. The Patriots will be looking to improve their secondary, and Bill Belichick seems to love these corner-safety hybrids.

  28. Atlanta Falcons: Dallas Thomas, G/OT, Tennessee
Peter Konz could eventually move to center and replace Todd McClure, but the Falcons will still need an upgrade at right guard. Because of Konz’s versatility, they can afford to take the top interior lineman available.

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Robert Woods, WR, USC
Mario Manningham could be released in the coming months. He’s owed close to $4 million in non-guaranteed money, and he’s coming off a torn ACL and PCL that he suffered in late December.

  30. Baltimore Ravens: Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State
Jason La Canfora recently reported that some of Ed Reed’s teammates believe that he won’t be back with the Ravens next year. Reed’s an impending free agent, so he may move on with Ray Lewis also leaving. If that happens, Baltimore will obviously be looking for a new safety this offseason.

Pick change; previously D.J. Swearinger, S
