Last update: Friday, Feb. 28, 2014. Round 5 added.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** This 2014 NFL Mock Draft (5 rounds) was updated Feb. 28. This mock draft will be updated at least once per week (Tuesday afternoons and other times for important events.). Check out old versions of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft in the archived mock draft section. Follow @walterfootball for updates. ***

  1. Houston Texans: Lamarcus Joyner, CB/S, Florida State
There are a few areas the Texans need to address outside of the quarterback position. They need to find a new right tackle, upgrade the outside linebacker position and acquire a better nickel. Out of those three areas, the best player available is Lamarcus Joyner, who would satisfy the latter need.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Antonio Richardson, OT

  2. Washington Redskins: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
ESPN loved talking up London Fletcher by saying he was still great this past season, but he could barely move. He was one of the reasons the Redskins were so inept on defense. He has announced his retirement anyway.

Pick change; previously Brandin Cooks, WR

  3. Cleveland Browns: Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State
The Browns planned on courting Ben Tate in free agency, but that was when Michael Lombardi was in charge. As for now, Carlos Hyde is the type of running back Cleveland is looking for per our NFL Draft Team Rumors page.

  4. St. Louis Rams: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
The Rams acquired this selection from the proposed Johnny Manziel trade, as noted in Round 1. Bradley Roby’s stock is on the rise after a strong Combine. St. Louis will definitely consider him atop Round 2, as the disappointing Cortland Finnegan due $9 million next year.

Pick change; previously David Yankey, G/OT

  5. Atlanta Falcons: Xavier Su’a-Filo, G, UCLA
The Falcons have some major issues on the offensive line. Everyone wants to look at left tackle, but the guard position is an area that must be upgraded as well.

  6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
The Buccaneers have discussed bringing in a new quarterback. They have a new regime, so they have no allegiance to Mike Glennon, who faded down the stretch. Offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford coached Carr at Fresno State.

Pick change; previously Ryan Shazier, LB

  7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois
Bill Polian recently stated that he believes Jimmy Garoppolo will be a first-round pick. I’m not sure if that’ll happen, but Garoppolo definitely has a shot to be chosen in the second round. The Jaguars have to take a quarterback early for obvious reasons.

Pick change; previously Ka’Deem Carey, RB

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
Unless the Vikings trade up into the top four, they’ll either have to reach for David Carr or choose a quarterback in the second round. Perhaps I’ll do a future mock draft where Minnesota leaps to No. 2, but it’ll have to settle for the latter scenario here.

Pick change; previously Derek Carr, QB

  9. Buffalo Bills: Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame
The Bills add yet another play-maker for E.J. Manuel, who needs all the help he can get. The tight end position definitely needs to be upgraded.

Pick change; previously Allen Robinson, WR

  10. Tennessee Titans: Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
The Titans will be looking for some long-term solutions at tackle. Michael Roos will be a free agent in 2015, while David Stewart could be released this offseason because he’s due $6.4 million next year.

Pick change; previously Marcus Roberson, CB

  11. New York Giants: Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State
New York could double dip in the trenches. Justin Tuck is a free agent, so the Giants will need another pass-rusher if he moves on.

  12. St. Louis Rams: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
There’s a chance the Rams take Sammy Watkins with their initial first-round pick. If not, perhaps they’ll address the receiver position with one of their next couple of choices. St. Louis needs to make sure Sam Bradford succeeds.

Pick change; previously Dion Bailey, S

  13. Detroit Lions: Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois
The Lions cut Louis Delmas recently. If they can’t find a safety in free agency, they’ll have to use an early selection on one because they have nothing at the position.

Pick change; previously Lamarcus Joyner, S

  14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
The Steelers have to address the cornerback position. Ike Taylor was dreadful this past year, as the receivers he battled – save for A.J. Green, oddly enough – posted season-high totals against him.

Pick change; previously Loucheiz Purifoy, CB

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Dion Bailey, S, USC
Dallas had horrible safety play all year. An upgrade in this area would have allowed it to beat Philadelphia in Week 17.

Pick change; previously Jimmie Ward, S

  16. Baltimore Ravens: Martavis Bryant, WR, Clemson
It should be quite apparent that the Ravens desperately need help at receiver. Neither Jacoby Jones nor Marlon Brown should be a No. 2 wideout in the NFL. Think Joe Flacco misses Anquan Boldin?

Pick change; previously Jordan Matthews, WR

  17. New York Jets: Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB, BYU
The Jets have a great interior pass rush, but they need to become more potent on the outside. I mocked Kyle Van Noy to the Jets in the first round during the season, so he has to be considered a steal at this juncture.

  18. Miami Dolphins: Tre Mason, RB, Auburn
The Dolphins don’t trust Lamar Miller at all, while Daniel Thomas isn’t very good. They’ll likely be searching for a new starting running back this spring.

  19. Chicago Bears: Bashaud Breeland, CB, Clemson
Chicago was able to re-sign Tim Jennings recently, but Charles Tillman’s contract is expiring soon. The Bears have to deal with Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford twice per year, so they’ll definitely look to upgrade their secondary with multiple selections.

Pick change; previously Ed Reynolds, S

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
The Cardinals, who typically go with the top player on their board, will almost definitely be interested in someone like Jeremiah Attaochu, as they really need an upgrade at outside linebacker across from Sam Acho. John Abraham, 36 in May, won’t be effective much longer.

  21. Green Bay Packers: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Packers need pass-rushing depth in the event that Clay Matthews gets hurt again. As Charlie Campbell reported, the Packers are very interested in Trent Murphy.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Carl Bradford, DE/OLB, Arizona State
The only linebacker who consistently put pressure on the quarterback was Trent Cole, and he won’t last beyond next year because he’s due $10 million in 2015. Another pass-rusher is currently needed anyway.

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Marcus Martin, C, USC
The center position is the No. 5 need I have listed in the Bengals team needs page. Kyle Cook needs to be upgraded.

Pick change; previously Bradley Roby, CB

  24. San Francisco 49ers: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
Jim Harbaugh loves to run multiple-tight end formations. He missed Delanie Walker this past season, so I could see San Francisco using one of its many second-day selections on a replacement.

  25. San Diego Chargers: Keith McGill, CB, Utah
The Chargers’ defense made every single quarterback look like a Pro Bowler early in the year. They have a dreadful cornerback situation, which could be remedied with the use of an early-round pick in May’s draft.

Pick change; previously Bashaud Breeland, CB

  26. New Orleans Saints: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
The Saints could use another receiver. Marques Colston disappointed this season prior to the Carolina victory, yet he’s still New Orleans’ top option by a wide margin.

Pick change; previously Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB

  27. Indianapolis Colts: Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin
The Colts need help all over their defense, including the linebacking corps, where the injury-prone Pat Angerer will be a free agent this March.

  28. Carolina Panthers: Brandon Thomas, OT/G, Clemson
The Panthers already needed help at right tackle. Now, they need help on the blind side as well, given that Jordan Gross announced his retirement.

Pick change; previously Davante Adams, WR

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers will need a new receiver to complement Michael Crabtree. Even if Boldin is retained, a third wideout is needed.

Pick change; previously Jarvis Landry, WR

  30. New England Patriots: Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State
Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

Pick change; previously Travis Swanson, C

  31. Denver Broncos: Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska
You have to wonder what the Broncos plan on doing at cornerback in 2014 and beyond. Champ Bailey and Quentin Jammer will be 36 and 35, respectively, in June. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, meanwhile, will be a free agent in March.

Pick change; previously Kyle Fuller, CB

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado
Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin are both impending free agents, but the Seahawks can do better at receiver anyway. I’m sure Cris Carter would agree.
