2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

  1. Houston Texans: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
    Case Keenum played well prior to the Oakland game, but things have fallen apart for him. If he finishes poorly, the Texans will likely draft a quarterback in the top two rounds.

    Tajh Boyd struggled in a big game against Florida State and has some height issues, which is why I’ve moved him down in my mock draft. However, he’s still worthy of being chosen in the 20-40 range.

  2. Atlanta Falcons: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor
    The Falcons have some major issues on the offensive line. Everyone wants to look at left tackle, but the guard position is an area that must be upgraded as well.

  3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
    Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent. He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

  4. Minnesota Vikings: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU
    The Vikings drafted Sharrif Floyd, but they’ll need another defensive tackle with Kevin Williams being an impending free agent. Besides, Anthony Johnson is the top player available.

  5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
    The Buccaneers could use an upgrade at tight end to help the emerging Mike Glennon, and the ultra-talented Austin Seferian-Jenkins is the top player available.

  6. Washington Redskins: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
    The Redskins need help all over their defensive, including up front. They’re getting no push from their defensive line.

  7. Buffalo Bills: Aaron Colvin, CB, Oklahoma
    The Bills were expected to address the cornerback position in the 2013 NFL Draft, but never got around to it. They probably won’t avoid that area two years in a row.

  8. Oakland Raiders: Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
    The Raiders strangely passed on Star Lotulelei and Sharrif Floyd when they had a huge need at defensive tackle. That is still the case, as Vance Walker and Pat Sims are a pretty underwhelming duo.

  9. New York Giants: James Hurst, OT, North Carolina
    The Giants, who have major pass-protection issues, need to shield Eli Manning as he continues into his mid-30s. William Beatty has struggled on the blind side this year, while Justin Pugh has totally been out of place at right tackle. This pick would allow Pugh to slide into his natural guard position.

  10. Cleveland Browns: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
    Brad Nessler called Greg Little “Mr. Dependable.” That’s pretty accurate, but only if you’re depending on Little dropping passes. The Browns need a new No. 2 wideout.

  11. Baltimore Ravens: Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB, Alabama
    This may seem like an odd selection with Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil both playing well, but Courtney Upshaw does not look like he’s developing into a potential starter down the road.

  12. New York Jets: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
    Here’s a weapon for Geno Smith, as Santonio Holmes won’t be around much longer. Stephen Hill, meanwhile, has been a huge disappointment.



  13. Miami Dolphins: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
    The Dolphins need help at cornerback. Brent Grimes, coming off a torn Achilles, is just a short-term solution. Dimitri Patterson, the other starter, hasn’t been able to stay healthy.

  14. San Diego Chargers: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
    The Chargers were so desperate for help at rush linebacker that they signed Dwight Freeney. The former Colt is obviously not a long-term solution for the team’s pass-rushing woes.

  15. St. Louis Rams: Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
    Cornerback wasn’t seen as a need two months ago, but Cortland Finnegan has been torched by everyone this season. The Rams will have to find someone new to play across from Janoris Jenkins.

  16. Pittsburgh Steelers: Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
    The Steelers have obvious issues on the offensive line. They won’t reach for a left tackle, but they’ll certainly draft one if a particular lineman happens to be one of the top players on their board.

  17. Green Bay Packers: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
    The Packers released Desmond Bishop in the offseason. On top of that, the rapidly aging A.J. Hawk will have an expiring contract soon. Ted Thompson will have to address the inside linebacker position in the near future.

  18. Philadelphia Eagles: Lamarcus Joyner, S, Florida State
    Philadelphia’s defense is terrible for many reasons, one of which is the safety position. Nate Allen is garbage, while Patrick Chung can’t stay healthy.

  19. Chicago Bears: Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
    I find it completely insane that the Bears could let Jay Cutler walk. If that happens, they’ll obviously be searching for a quarterback in the spring.

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
    Andre Ellington is a great threat out of the backfield who can go the distance on any play, but the Arizona coaching staff doesn’t see him as an every-down runner. Perhaps they’ll pair him with someone who is.

  21. Tennessee Titans: Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
    The Titans are fine at offensive tackle right now, but Michael Roos and David Stewart will be free agents in 2015 and 2014, respectively (the latter has a voidable year after this upcoming season). They’ll need to retool at the position if they don’t re-sign either of the two.

  22. Detroit Lions: Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
    Dominic Raiola has seemingly been on Detroit’s roster forever, but he’ll be a 35-year-old free agent in March. The Lions will probably bring in a new center.

  23. Dallas Cowboys: Christian Jones, LB, Florida State
    Bruce Carter has been a poor fit in Dallas’ new 4-3 system. The Cowboys will have to consider spending an early draft pick on a linebacker.

  24. Cincinnati Bengals: Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas
    The Bengals drafted Margus Hunt, but they have Michael Johnson hitting free agency soon. With Carlos Dunlap recently extended, it’s very unlikely that Johnson will be retained.



  25. San Francisco 49ers: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
    Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers will need a new receiver to complement Michael Crabtree.

  26. Indianapolis Colts: Ed Stinson, DE/DT, Alabama
    I mocked Datone Jones to the Colts for a while in the 2013 NFL Draft because they need a pass-rushing presence up front. That’s still a hole they have to fill, as we learned by watching Indianapolis fail to pressure Carson Palmer this past Sunday.

  27. Carolina Panthers: Craig Loston, S, LSU
    Here’s some more help for the Carolina secondary. The Panthers don’t exactly have the best safety tandem in the NFL, as Michael Mitchell and Quintin Mikell are both pretty mediocre.

  28. New England Patriots: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
    Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

  29. New Orleans Saints: Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa
    The Saints don’t value offensive tackles enough to take one in the first round, but perhaps they’ll search for an upgrade over the struggling Charles Brown on Day 2.

  30. San Francisco 49ers: Dominique Easley, DE, Florida
    The 49ers will need a successor for Justin Smith (Tank Carradine, maybe?) and also some depth on the defensive line. With four Day 2 selections, they can take a chance on someone like Dominique Easley, a tremendous talent who is coming off a terrible injury.

  31. Denver Broncos: Yawin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut
    Wesley Woodyard has looked out of place trying to play middle linebacker. This is an area Denver may want to upgrade.

  32. Seattle Seahawks: David Yankey, G/OT, Stanford
    The Seahawks have multiple areas of concern on their offensive line, including both guard spots. Imagine how potent Russell Wilson would be with upgraded protection.
