2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1 – Picks 17-32

Last update: Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013. Major changes in all 4 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Pittsburgh Steelers: Dion Jordan, DE/OLB, Oregon
James Harrison may not be back next year. He’ll be due $6.6 million as a 35-year-old who is having trouble staying healthy. The Steelers may spend an early pick on a rush linebacker.

Dion Jordan would be a top-10 selection this April if he didn’t suffer a torn labrum. I feel like the Steelers’ front office is smart enough to end his slide.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Manti Te’o, ILB

  2. Dallas Cowboys: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
The Cowboys hired Monte Kiffin and are moving to a 4-3 defense. Anthony Spencer said he would love to play the defensive end position across from DeMarcus Ware, but that’s probably not going to happen because Dallas doesn’t have the cap space to re-sign him. If Spencer does leave, Dallas may use this selection to find a new complement for Ware. Sam Montgomery makes a ton of sense at this spot.

  3. New York Giants: Ezekiel Ansah, DE/OLB, BYU
Giant fans know that general manager Jerry Reese loves drafting pass-rushers. With Osi Umenyiora entering free agency this March and Justin Tuck having a down year, Reese may select a defensive end at the end of the first round.

Ezekiel Ansah doesn’t have much experience, but he’s a highly athletic pass-rusher who has tremendous upside. Remind you of anyone?

Pick change; previously Dion Jordan, DE/OLB

  4. Chicago Bears: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
It’s sad to see the Brian Urlacher era come to an end. Urlacher will be a free agent in March, but he was playing poorly anyway. The Bears will have to find a replacement this offseason – perhaps in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. They’ll probably be interested in Alec Ogletree, who has been tremendous for Georgia this season. Ogletree is arguably the top prospect available.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame
Back in October, I had Manti Te’o slotted to Cincinnati at No. 10 overall because: “The Bengals have major problems at linebacker. They lost Keith Rivers this past offseason, Manny Lawson will be a free agent in the spring, and Rey Maualuga is arguably one of the worst defensive starters in the NFL. I don’t know if he’s hurt or what, but he’s been awful this season. Manti Te’o, the top player available, would be a big boost to the linebacking corps.”

Well, Te’o is now a legitimate option for them at No. 21. He’ll likely fall at least a few spots because of the weird story about his fake girlfriend, but the Bengals won’t care. They’ll see a player who would offer a big upgrade on defense.

Pick change; previously Kenny Vaccaro, S

  6. St. Louis Rams: Keenan Allen, WR, California
I don’t think the Rams will necessarily be targeting a receiver in the first round because they’re still developing Brian Quick, but they will absolutely consider Keenan Allen if he’s available at No. 22 because he’s arguably the top player available. It’s pretty obvious that Jeff Fisher needs to find receiving help for Sam Bradford.

  7. Minnesota Vikings: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
The front office has to add more talent to complement a very inconsistent Christian Ponder. The Vikings need an upgrade across from Percy Harvin, as Jerome Simpson is way too inconsistent to be a No. 2 receiver. Harvin may not even be back with the Vikings next year, so Minnesota may target two wideout upgrades this offseason.

Pick change; previously Johnathan Jenkins, NT

  8. Indianapolis Colts: Johnathan Jenkins, NT, Georgia
Antonio Johnson’s contract is up, but he was playing out of position anyway. A nose tackle upgrade is needed, as the Colts had major issues stopping the run this past season.

Pick change; previously Jonathan Cooper, G/C

  9. Seattle Seahawks: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
The Seahawks’ receiving corps really needs to be upgraded. Sidney Rice is constantly laboring through injuries and has struggled to get any sort of separation for most of the season. Golden Tate, meanwhile, is way too inconsistent, though he was better at the end of the season. Russell Wilson kept improving every week, so Pete Carroll needs to bolster his wideout corps.

This is a bit high for Terrance Williams, but the Seahawks don’t fear taking anyone who is deemed a reach. Pete Carroll will likely fall in love with Williams’ size and straight-line speed.

  10. Green Bay Packers: Jonathan Cooper, G/C, North Carolina
Can anyone explain why Jeff Saturday was voted to the Pro Bowl? He didn’t even start at the end of the season. The Packers had major problems at center after letting Scott Wells walk away, so they’ll have to address that area this spring. Ted Thompson will like Jonathan Cooper’s versatility, as the North Carolina product can play all three interior positions.

Pick change; previously Tyler Eifert, TE

  11. Houston Texans: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
There’s a ton of uncertainty at inside linebacker for Houston. Brian Cushing is coming off a torn ACL, Bradie James is an impending free agent who isn’t very good, while neither Tim Dobbins nor Darryl Sharpton is worthy of starting.

  12. Denver Broncos: Bennie Logan, DT, LSU
The Broncos spent a second-rounder this past April on Derek Wolfe, but he’s playing defensive end and moving inside on nickel situations. That’s why Denver still needs a ton of help at defensive tackle. Justin Bannan and Kevin Vickerson, the starters there this past season, will be free agents this March.

  13. New England Patriots: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
It’s amazing that New England’s offense was incredible (until the Baltimore game) considering that Deion Branch was playing two-thirds of the snaps every game prior to being released. Imagine how explosive the Patriots would be if they added a legitimate threat opposite Brandon Lloyd. They also have to think about a possible future without Wes Welker, who will be a free agent this offseason. New England has shown that it doesn’t value Welker as much, so another team could offer him way more money.

  14. Atlanta Falcons: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
The Falcons have multiple problems they have to address on their defensive line – a unit that struggles to both generate pressure and stop the run. One issue is at defensive tackle next to Jonathan Babineaux. Former first-rounder Peria Jerry hasn’t been able to stay healthy, while Corey Peters wasn’t any good either.

  15. Baltimore Ravens: Matt Elam, S, Florida
Jason La Canfora recently reported that some of Ed Reed’s teammates believe that he won’t be back with the Ravens next year. Reed’s an impending free agent, so he may move on with Ray Lewis also leaving. If that happens, Baltimore will obviously be looking for a new safety this offseason.

  16. San Francisco 49ers: Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
The 49ers have a fantastic defense, but they’ll need to keep adding to it with some players growing older or heading into free agency. Justin Smith falls under both categories. He’ll be entering his walk year at 34 several months following the 2013 NFL Draft. San Francisco will have to find a successor sometime soon.

Pick change; previously Alex Okafor, DE/OLB
