2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 3

  1. Houston Texans: Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
    The Texans would kill two stones with one bird with this pick, as Emmitt would say. They need to upgrade their pass rush and find some help at inside linebacker. Jeremiah Attaochu would satisfy the former, which would allow Brooks Reed to move inside.

  2. Washington Redskins: Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin
    ESPN loved talking up London Fletcher by saying he was still great this past season, but he could barely move. He was one of the reasons the Redskins were so inept on defense. He has announced his retirement anyway. Darryl Sharpton was brought in, but he’s just a short-term solution.

  3. Oakland Raiders: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
    The Raiders needed multiple upgrades on their offensive line heading into the offseason. Guard is still an issue.

  4. Atlanta Falcons: Ed Reynolds, S, Stanford
    The Falcons addressed a bunch of needs this offseason, but one hole that remains is the safety position, as the team recently cut Thomas DeCoud.

  5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado
    The Buccaneers need at least one more weapon for their new quarterbacks. They’re pretty thin at receiver.

  6. Jacksonville Jaguars: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
    The Jaguars signed Toby Gerhart, but perhaps they’ll add another running back in Rounds 3-4. They have to know that Gerhart can’t possibly be the sole featured back.

  7. Cleveland Browns: Jeremy Hill, RB, LSU
    Ben Tate is now with the Browns, but he has an extensive injury history. Cleveland may decide to protect itself.

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Craig Loston, S, LSU
    The Vikings did a good job of addressing their pedestrian secondary this offseason, but they still need a safety next to Harrison Smith.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU
    If the Bills don’t grab Mike Evans at No. 9, they may just opt for a receiver at this juncture. Stevie Johnson won’t be on the team much longer.

  10. New York Giants: Devonta Freeman, RB, Florida State
    The Giants signed Rashad Jennings, but they still need another running back. They can’t rely on just Jennings until David Wilson returns.

  11. St. Louis Rams: A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama
    The Rams should think about drafting a quarterback on Day 2 just in case Sam Bradford continues to be mediocre (and injury-prone).

  12. Detroit Lions: Ahmad Dixon, S, Baylor
    The Lions cut Louis Delmas. If they can’t find a safety in free agency, they’ll have to use an early selection on one because they have nothing at the position.

  13. San Francisco 49ers: Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State
    The 49ers spent a first-round pick on a safety last year, but they may have to use another selection on one with Donte Whitner heading into free agency.

  14. Dallas Cowboys: Telvin Smith, OLB, Florida State
    When defenders like Ernie Sims and DeVonte Holloman are playing major snaps for the defense, something absolutely needs to be done.

  15. Baltimore Ravens: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
    Given Ray Rice’s struggles and legal issues, the Ravens may use a pick in the middle rounds on a new running back.

  16. New York Jets: Demarcus Lawrence, DE/OLB, Boise State
    The Jets have a great interior pass rush, but they need to become more potent on the outside. Demarcus Lawrence is one of the top players available.

  17. Miami Dolphins: Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
    Both Cyrus Kouandjio and Antonio Richardson took major hits at the Combine because of their failed physical exams. I didn’t know what to do with them, so I dropped both to Rounds 3-4.

    As noted earlier, the Dolphins must make multiple upgrades on their offensive line. If they want to use Zack Martin at guard, they could take a tackle later on.

  18. Chicago Bears: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU
    If the Bears can’t retain Henry Melton and happen to miss out on Aaron Donald at No. 14, Anthony Johnson would be an option during Day 2.

  19. Cleveland Browns: Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin
    If Greg Little is “Mr. Dependable,” does that make Davone Bess “Mr. Reliable?” Sounds like an episode of Emmitt on the Brink…

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Joel Bitonio, G/OT, Nevada
    Someone like Joel Bitonio could compete for the right guard spot with Earl Watford. He could also provide depth at both tackle and guard.

  21. Green Bay Packers: Tre Boston, S, North Carolina
    Is there any doubt that the Packers need to improve their secondary? Their defensive backfield blew so many coverages throughout the season, and they had no chance against Colin Kaepernick.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Trevor Reilly, DE/OLB, Utah
    The only linebacker who consistently put pressure on the quarterback was Trent Cole, and he won’t last beyond next year because he’s due $10 million in 2015. Another pass-rusher is currently needed anyway.

  23. Kansas City Chiefs: Cameron Fleming, OT, Stanford
    After allowing Branden Albert to walk, the Chiefs will want to address the tackle position at some point during the middle rounds if they can’t do anything about it in free agency.

  24. Cincinnati Bengals: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
    The center position is the No. 5 need I have listed in the Bengals team needs page. Kyle Cook needed to be upgraded before his release.



  25. San Diego Chargers: Jaylen Watkins, CB, Florida
    The Chargers’ defense made every single quarterback look like a Pro Bowler early in the year. They have a dreadful cornerback situation, which could be remedied with the use of an early-round pick in May’s draft.

  26. Indianapolis Colts: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor
    Adding an offensive linemen who can play multiple positions would be a good idea for the Colts, who have issues up front.

  27. New Orleans Saints: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
    The Saints lost Darren Sproles, so they may want to find another pass-catching running back in the 2014 NFL Draft.

  28. Carolina Panthers: Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss
    The Panthers obviously could double up – or even triple up – on receivers during the early stages of the 2014 NFL Draft.

  29. New England Patriots: DaQuan Jones, NT, Penn State
    Perhaps this is an overreaction pick, but Vince Wilfork has asked for his release. DaQuan Jones had an awesome 3-cone time at the Combine, which is something Bill Belichick loves.

  30. San Francisco 49ers: Pierre Desir, CB, Lindenwood
    The secondary is a troublesome area for the 49ers, so they may spend multiple selections on the cornerback position.

  31. Denver Broncos: Jack Mewhort, OT, Ohio State
    The Broncos are considering moving Orlando Franklin inside to replace Zane Beadles, which would open up a big need at right tackle.

  32. Minnesota Vikings: Dominique Easley, DE, Florida
    Jared Allen, a free agent, is not expected back in Minnesota. The Vikings will have to find someone else to rush the passer.
