2011 NFL Mock Draft: Round Four

Last update: Thursday, April 28, 2011, 3:30 PM. Final update.
Next update: Thurs evening. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

This 2011 NFL Mock Draft order is based on the official 2011 NFL Draft Order.

  1. Carolina Panthers: Brandon Hogan, CB, West Virginia
Assuming Richard Marshall isn’t re-signed, the Panthers will need corner depth behind Chris Gamble and Captain Munnerlyn.

Brandon Hogan, coming off a torn ACL, can sit for at least half a year and compete for a starting job in 2012.

    MISSING

  2. Seattle Seahawks: Brandon Burton, CB, Utah
Seattle acquired this pick in the Deion Branch trade.

As noted in Round 1, Seattle has to fix its pass defense. If it doesn’t take Jimmy Smith at No. 25, a corner like Brandon Burton will be an option in Round 4.

  3. Buffalo Bills: Quan Sturdivant, ILB, North Carolina
The Bills need an upgrade next to Paul Posluszny. The Bills have expressed a ton of interest in Quan Sturdivant.

  4. Cincinnati Bengals: Curtis Marsh, CB, Utah State
The Bengals should probably find an insurance policy just in case Johnathan Joseph doesn’t stay in Cincinnati.

  5. Cleveland Browns: Jah Reid, OT/G, Central Florida
Anyone who watched Cleveland’s second game against Pittsburgh last year knows that Colt McCoy’s protection needs to improve.

  6. Arizona Cardinals: Lee Ziemba, OT/G, Auburn
Another possible upgrade for the Cardinals’ terrible offensive line.

  7. Philadelphia Eagles: Brandon Fusco, C/G, Slippery Rock
Even with the addition of Howard Mudd, the Eagles have to acquire multiple upgrades on the offensive front. The right side of the line is in shambles, which is not good considering that the team’s current quarterback is left-handed.

  8. Houston Texans: Quinton Carter, S, Oklahoma
Bernard Pollard is great in run support, but he’s a huge liability in coverage. That’s not a good thing if you’re trying to beat Peyton Manning twice a year.

  9. Minnesota Vikings: Drake Nevis, DT, LSU
Defensive tackle is not a big need for the Vikings, but it can be addressed. Drake Nevis is one of the top players available.

Pick change; previously Christian Ballard, DE/DT

  10. Detroit Lions: K.J. Wright, OLB, Mississippi State
The Lions will have to find two upgrades at linebacker this offseason. They may go after Stephen Tulloch, who played for Jim Schwartz in Tennessee.

  11. San Francisco 49ers: Shane Vereen, RB, California
Brian Westbrook won’t be back next year, so the 49ers may bring in a new pass-catching running back. Jim Harbaugh is very familiar with Shane Vereen, having coached against him in the Pac-10.

  12. Tennessee Titans: Ahmad Black, SS, Florida
Chris Hope is owed $6.5 million in 2011 – which is quite a coincidence seeing as how he missed 6.5 million tackles last season.

Pick change; previously DeAndre McDaniel, S

  13. Dallas Cowboys: Lawrence Guy, DE/DT, Arizona State
Jay Ratliff and Stephen Bowen figure to start on Dallas’ defensive line for a long time. Ratliff will continue to man the nose tackle position, but there is still a void at right end, currently occupied by an ineffective Igor Olshansky.

Pick change; previously Joseph Barksdale, OT

  14. Miami Dolphins: Virgil Green, TE, Nevada
Anthony Fasano lost his greatest supporter when Bill Parcells left the front office. The Dolphins will be looking for an upgrade at tight end.

Miami likes Virgil Green. He’s really athletic and possesses a ton of upside.

  15. St. Louis Rams: Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, Oregon State
The Rams could use a change-of-pace back for Steven Jackson, who doesn’t have many more peak years ahead of him.

  16. Oakland Raiders: Jordan Cameron, TE, USC
Jordan Cameron is the type of “great playa” Al Davis will be searching for in the middle rounds. Another tight end is needed for Hue Jackson’s multiple tight end sets.

  17. Jacksonville Jaguars: Lawrence Wilson, OLB, Connecticut
The oft-injured Justin Durant is a free agent. If he’s not retained, Jacksonville will need a replacement.

Lawrence Wilson is another Gene Smith player. He was a team captain and a 4-year starter at Connecticut.

  18. San Francisco 49ers: Jerrell Powe, NT, Ole Miss
If the 49ers don’t plan on re-signing Aubrayo Franklin to a long-term deal, they’ll have to find another nose tackle.

  19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Akeem Dent, ILB, Georgia
With Barrett Ruud likely gone, the Buccaneers will be looking for help at linebacker. I’m hearing someone they’ll target at the position is Akeem Dent.

  20. New York Giants: Vincent Brown, WR, San Diego State
There’s talk of the Giants re-signing Plaxico Burress; Steve Smith’s nasty knee injury may cause him to miss training camp.

    MISSING

  21. Kansas City Chiefs: Chris Culliver, FS/KR, South Carolina
The Chiefs have shown interest in quite a few free safeties this offseason, which might be an indication that they plan on bringing someone in to challenge Kendrick Lewis.

  22. Indianapolis Colts: Greg Salas, WR, Hawaii
Reggie Wayne is old. Anthony Gonzalez is always hurt. Austin Collie suffers a concussion every other game. The Colts need help at receiver.

  23. Philadelphia Eagles: Ross Homan, OLB, Ohio State
The Eagles need to address numerous positions on defense, including strongside linebacker. Stewart Bradley is a free agent who has never fully recovered from a knee injury.

  24. Jacksonville Jaguars: Kelvin Sheppard, ILB, LSU
The Jaguars could draft two linebackers relatively early this weekend. One player they’ll look at is Kelvin Sheppard – a 3-year starter and a team captain.

  25. Buffalo Bills: Josh Thomas, CB, Buffalo
The Bills acquired this pick from Seattle for Marshawn Lynch.

Terrence McGee can’t stay healthy. He’s a good player, but he’s missed 12 games in the past two years. At 30 years old, his best days are behind him.

  26. Baltimore Ravens: DeMarcus Van Dyke, CB, Miami
The Ravens have a bunch of free agent cornerbacks, so they’ll have to find some depth in the 2011 NFL Draft. Baltimore has shown interest in the underrated DeMarcus Van Dyke.

  27. Atlanta Falcons: Cliff Matthews, DE, South Carolina
Believe me, I’d love to give the Falcons a defensive end in an earlier round, but I’m not going to have them reach for need – at least not until Round 4.

  28. New England Patriots: Jason Pinkston, OT/G, Pittsburgh
The Patriots have to address their offensive line. With Matt Light slated to hit free agency and Sebastian Vollmer expected to move over to left tackle, New England will need a new right tackle.

  29. New York Jets: Jeremy Beal, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
It never hurts to have as many quality pass-rushers as possible when you have to go through Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger every year to get to the Super Bowl.

Jeremy Beal had a terrible Senior Bowl and Combine, so his stock is slipping. But Brandon Spikes, another “falling” prospect, just enjoyed a great rookie campaign for New England. Rex Ryan may want to utilize the same strategy.

  30. Chicago Bears: Jalil Brown, CB, Colorado
Tim Jennings, a free agent in March 2012, played well during the regular season but struggled in the playoffs. The Bears need all the help they can get at cornerback if they want to overtake the Packers and all of their talented wideouts.

  31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Sione Fua, NT, Stanford
Nose tackle is not an immediate need for the Steelers like offensive tackle, guard or cornerback, but it’s a position that could be addressed early in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Casey Hampton turns 34 in September. His snaps were down this year, and while he still played well at times, he was no longer the dominant force that Steeler fans were used to seeing in the interior of their defensive line.

  32. Green Bay Packers: Denarius Moore, WR, Tennessee
Donald Driver doesn’t have much left in the tank, while James Jones is a free agent. The Packers probably will target a receiver at some point during the 2011 NFL Draft.

  33. Tennessee Titans: Greg Jones, LB, Michigan State
Stephen Tulloch is a free agent and Will Witherspoon struggled last year with the Titans. Help is needed at linebacker.

  34. Green Bay Packers: Rob Housler, TE, Florida Atlantic
The Packers like to use two tight end sets, so someone like Rob Housler would definitely be in play at the bottom of the fourth round. Housler, one of the top players available, projects as a good in-line blocker, and would replace the recently released Donald Lee.
