2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1 - Picks 17-32
Last update: Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Major changes in both rounds.

Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.
The order of this 2013 NFL Mock Draft is loosely based on my 2012 NFL Power Rankings.
-
New Orleans Saints: Chris Faulk, OT, LSU
2012 NFL Mock Draft selection: None
I wrote this in a previous update: "The Saints are hosting the Super Bowl this year, which means something awful is going to happen and they're going to be drafting in the top 10. That's how these things work. Just ask Colt fans." Hmm... think Bountygate qualifies? Sean Payton won't be coaching next year, which could really hurt New Orleans. That would explain why it's drafting No. 17 overall.
At any rate, the Saints will need an offensive tackle next spring if they can't re-sign free agent-to-be Jermon Bushrod. Bushrod isn't that good to begin with, so New Orleans could stand to find an upgrade.
Pick change; previously D.J. Fluker, OT
-
St. Louis Rams: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
The Rams will give Rodger Saffold and Jason Smith another shot this year. At least one of them will likely disappoint in 2012, so Jeff Fisher will probably search for a tackle next spring. Fisher played against the Texans twice per year when he was with Tennessee, and he watched Houston completely ruin David Carr's career by not building a competent offensive line around him. He won't want to make the same mistake with Sam Bradford.
Pick change; previously Chris Faulk, OT
-
Carolina Panthers: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
Steve Smith will turn 34 a couple of weeks after the 2013 NFL Draft. The Panthers will need to think about finding a new No. 1 wideout for the future. A new secondary receiver also is a need. Brandon LaFell can't get open.
Pick change; previously Jackson Jeffcoat, DE
-
Philadelphia Eagles: Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
Demetress Bell's deal is essentially for one year. If his knee issues flare up again, and if Jason Peters isn't making good progress coming off his Achilles, the Eagles might be desperate for a tackle next spring.
-
San Francisco 49ers: Barrett Jones, G/C/OT, Alabama
The 49ers were rumored to like Kevin Zeitler at No. 30 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. This never happened, so maybe they'll address the interior of the offensive line early next April. Barrett Jones can step into numerous places up front, including center.
-
Atlanta Falcons: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
The Falcons didn't obtain a tight end at the end of April, so they'll probably find a successor (or a replacement) for Tony Gonzalez in the 2013 NFL Draft.
-
Buffalo Bills: Bennie Logan, DT, LSU
There was some talk entering the 2012 NFL Draft that the Bills would select a defensive tackle and move Kyle Williams outside. I never really bought into that, but maybe it's something they'll do if one of their newly signed ends struggles in 2012.
-
Baltimore Ravens: Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame
The Ravens wanted Dont'a Hightower, but the Patriots moved ahead of them and stole him. Maybe Ozzie Newsome will find his successor for Ray Lewis next April.
-
Kansas City Chiefs: Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
As I wrote in my NFL Power Rankings, the Chiefs have the best roster in the NFL if you exclude the quarterback position. I believe they'll win the AFC West and make the playoffs, but they'll suffer another early exit because of Matt Cassel's limitations. Here's one way to fix that.
-
Pittsburgh Steelers: Marquess Wilson, WR, Washington State
General manager Kevin Colbert will never turn down a skill-position player if the value is right for one early in the NFL Draft. That's the case here with Marquess Wilson, who could replace Mike Wallace if he leaves next offseason.
-
Chicago Bears: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
The Bears were expected to address their defensive tackle depth in the 2012 NFL Draft, but they never did so. They can make amends for it here.
-
Detroit Lions: Johnny Adams, CB, Michigan State
The Lions take the best player available, and that, by my estimation, would be Johnny Adams at this juncture. They spent three 2012 draft picks on corners, but as we've seen over the years, they're not afraid to address a lesser need.
Pick change; previously Xavier Rhodes, CB
-
Houston Texans: Ricky Wagner, OT, Wisconsin
The Texans were interested in bringing in a right tackle early in the 2012 NFL Draft, but they never got the chance. Well, here's their opportunity. The position will have to be addressed if Rashad Butler can't properly fill in for Eric Winston.
Pick change; previously Luke Joeckel, OT
-
Green Bay Packers: T.J. McDonald, S, USC
It's a shame that Nick Collins' career had to be derailed by a devastating neck injury, but he was cut recently. The safety position really needs to be upgraded.
-
New England Patriots: Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma
The Patriots are a tough team to mock for because they don't really have any needs outside of five-technique. The safety position, however, will have to be addressed if free agent-to-be Patrick Chung walks.
-
New York Giants: William Gholston, DE, Michigan State
I imagine that Jerry Reese is crying in his sleep right now because he didn't get to add a pass-rusher in the 2012 NFL Draft. I'm sure he'll make amends next April.

If they have a bad season this year I think they will give Tebow a shot having a full offseason as the unquestioned #1 QB and either draft a QB in the 3rd or 4th round or just hold off completely and see how Tebow does then, if he sucks, draft a new guy in 2014.

Make no mistake. If the Jets are drafting tenth, they won't pass on Logan Thomas.

Colts will be better than the Jags!
Vikings meanwhile, they're guarnted 6 losses from in divisions. They'll lose to San Fran for sure, Texans for sure. If they lose two of three vs the other 3 in the AFC South then they'll be the first pick for sure.

@xxx.xxx.xxx4.86-difference is the colts sucked because manning was gone and had no consistent play at QB. jags had no consistent play at QB either, yet they managed to stil keep themselves out of a top 5 pick. they got a running game and an actual defense unlike the colts. no way they finish that bad. they will compete for 2nd place in the south, and im not even a jags fan

Holmgren has final say on every football decision. Heckert basically makes a suggestion on who to sign or draft and Holmgren says yes or no

And you are completely unaware of that Holmgren is the man who makes the calls on what players to sign and draft?

Seriously. Are you completely unaware of the fact that Mike Holmgren is NOT the GM of the Browns? Tom Heckert is.

if you are going to try to be the "first out of the gate" at least try to edit what you write week over week, just lazy
Buffalo Bills: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia The Bills didn't spend a single draft pick on a quarterback this past weekend in contrarian fashion. They'll need to do so next spring.

I'm not sure where you heard that Buffalo was considering moving Kyle Williams to DE in their new 4-3 scheme. In their 3-4 scheme, there was some talk of moving Williams to play 5-technique end.
Williams isn't a good fit for a 4-3 end. His skill set is best as a 3-technique DT. If Buffalo drafts a DT, it's to replace Williams, which would only happen if he suffered a major injury.

How do his skills not translate? He has incredible size and is crazy athletic for his size. He was only a sophomore last year and dominated 3 or 4 games. Many GMs drool over his measurables. Just look at JPP. If he can improve from last year and put up an 8 or 9 sack season, he will be a 1st rounder.

Just because he will be done rehabbing doesn't mean he will be able to play at a high enough level to be a starting LT. Some people never recover enough to from that injury to be starters ever again. Not to mention he ruptured it a 2nd time about a week after surgery and had to get the surgery redone. And he will be 31 by the time it heals. And if Bell's knee keeps acting up, they will release him. His contract is set up so he gets most of his money after the 1st year. So if he can't get healthy they will cut him before the 2nd year kicks in.

There has been no indication that MJD and the Jags will get a deal done anytime soon. And holdouts really seem to hurt RBs more than most positions.
That Pro Bowl TE you speak of was basically invisible last year. And don't blame Gabbert. TEs are supposed to be rookie QBs best friends and serve as a safety valve for them. But Lewis could hardly ever get open The WRs should be better than last year, but they are no sure thing. Laurent Robinson is always hurt and last year was the first season that he ever stayed healthy. And some WRs have a habit of not giving 100% once they get a decent contract. Lee Evans did absolutely nothing last year. And while I think Blackmon will be good, he is still a rookie so there's a chance he has some growing pains And Aaron Ross is a below average starter who has never played without an amazing pass-rush covering up his deficiencies. The Jags could definitely be the worst team in football. Nobody thought the Colts would be as bad as they were last year. We figured they wouldnt be a playoff team without Manning, but not the worst team. So the Jags could be as bad if Gabbert doesnt greatly improve

Gabbert looking good in OTAs and minicamps means nothing. His problem last year was that he was afraid of being hit and couldn't stay composed when the blitz came. They rarely go after the QB in minicamps and OTAs, and when they do, they're still not allowed to touch the QB. So we have no idea if his biggest problem is fixed at all.

The Jags could easily pick #1. Did anybody think the Colts would be the worst team in the league last year? We knew they wouldn't be a playoff team without Manning, but nobody thought they would lose their first 13 games. Its no guarantee that Gabbert improves very much, and teams with bad QBs usually have the worst records
