What does every team need to accomplish in the 2012 NFL Draft? We’ll look at each team’s goals on this page, as well as possible selections for each squad. Also see how the goals are being addressed in the 2012 NFL Mock Draft (will be updated tomorrow).

Back to 2012 NFL Draft Goals: Picks 1-16.

  1. Oakland Raiders
The Raiders don’t draft until the final pick of the third round, so all they can do is acquire depth and hope some of their selections turn out to be starters.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    3. Nigel Bradham, OLB
    4. Jake Bequette, DE

    MISSING

  2. San Diego Chargers
Finding some upgrades on the offensive line to protect Philip Rivers would be pretty helpful, but A.J. Smith doesn’t seem interested in upgrading Jeromey Clary at right tackle. He’ll focus on the defense instead. San Diego’s poor pass rush and mediocre secondary need to be addressed.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Whitney Mercilus, DE/OLB
    2. David Wilson, RB
    3. Dwight Bentley, CB
    4. Antonio Allen, S

  3. Chicago Bears
The Brandon Marshall trade was just the beginning. The Bears need to continue to bolster Jay Cutler’s supporting cast. The offensive line still needs to be retooled, while the receiving corps is devoid of play-makers outside of Marshall. Chicago also needs to find a capable pass-rusher across from Julius Peppers.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Kendall Wright, WR
    2. Vinny Curry, DE
    3. Brandon Brooks, G
    4. Andrew Datko, OT

  4. Tennessee Titans
CJ2K turned into CJ1K last year, partly because the interior offensive line couldn’t block. The Titans added Steve Hutchinson through free agency, but he’s not nearly enough. Upgrades at right guard and center are still needed. Tennessee is also expected to address the defensive front.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Michael Brockers, DT
    2. Kevin Zeitler, G
    3. Cam Johnson, DE
    4. Philip Blake, C

  5. Cincinnati Bengals
Andy Dalton had a surprisingly successful rookie campaign. The Bengals now have to find help for him on offense, namely at running back, receiver and guard. The 21st-overall selection should be used to sign Mike Wallace, there’s no question about that. Meanwhile, the secondary needs multiple upgrades.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Dre Kirkpatrick, CB
    1. Mike Wallace, WR
    2. David Wilson, RB
    3. Brandon Brooks, G
    4. DeQuan Menzie, CB

  6. Atlanta Falcons
The offensive line is the greatest area of concern. Left tackle and right guard are major problem areas. A successor for Todd McClure is also needed at center. Unfortunately, Atlanta doesn’t have a first-round pick.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    2. Amini Silatolu, G
    3. Jeff Allen, OT

  7. Detroit Lions
The Lions believe in drafting the best player available. If they were to focus on certain positions, however, they would undoubtedly fix their atrocious secondary. If you watched New Orleans score at will against Detroit in the playoffs, you know why this area needs to be addressed. Meanwhile, a franchise left tackle is something that has eluded the Lions for years.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Stephon Gilmore, CB
    2. Bobby Massie, OT
    3. Jamell Fleming, CB
    4. Antonio Allen, S

  8. Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers don’t have many needs, so they can afford to take the best player available – something that they usually do anyway.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Dont’a Hightower, ILB
    2. Kelechi Osemele, G
    3. Chris Polk, RB
    4. Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, NT

  9. Denver Broncos
There are three things the Broncos must do. First, they have to provide some support for Peyton Manning. They have nothing at receiver outside of Demaryius Thomas. The running back position is also a mess, with Willis McGahee in decline and Knowshon Moreno always injured. Second, Denver must address defensive tackle because there’s nothing there. And third, the secondary has to be upgraded because all of the corners are old.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Kendall Wright, WR
    2. Brandon Thompson, DT
    3. Mike Martin, DT
    4. Robert Turbin, RB
    4. Ryan Steed, CB

  10. Houston Texans
The Texans had only one need entering the offseason, and that was at the receiver position. They’ve lost right tackle Eric Winston, guard Mike Brisiel and linebacker DeMeco Ryans since then, so Houston will need replacements.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Stephen Hill, WR
    2. Shea McClellin, DE/OLB
    3. Marvin McNutt, WR
    4. Nigel Bradham, ILB
    4. Nate Potter, OT/G

  11. New Orelans Saints
The Saints don’t pick until the third round. Like the Raiders, they’ll have to use their picks on depth. New Orleans will concentrate on the defensive side of the ball.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    3. Mike Martin, DT
    4. Jake Bequette, DE

  12. Green Bay Packers
Green Bay’s defense really disappointed last year. Ted Thompson will undoubtedly be looking for help at defensive end, rush linebacker, cornerback and safety. An offensive home-run hitter would be a possible luxury.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Stephon Gilmore, CB
    2. Shea McClellin, DE/OLB
    3. Billy Winn, DE/DT
    4. Ronnie Hillman, RB
    4. George Iloka, S
    4. Andrew Datko, OT

  13. Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore doesn’t have any glaring needs, so Ozzie Newsome will take the best player available.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Peter Konz, C/G
    2. Brandon Boykin, CB
    3. Nigel Bradham, ILB
    4. DaJohn Harris, DE/DT

  14. San Francisco 49ers
Like the Ravens, San Francisco doesn’t really have any pressing needs that it needs to address. It’ll be best player available, early and often.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Stephen Hill, WR
    2. Dwayne Allen, TE
    3. Brandon Washington, G
    4. Kheeston Randall, DE/DT

  15. New England Patriots
New England’s needs are pretty obvious. The team couldn’t get any pressure on the quarterback last year, which impacted an already-lackluster secondary. It should be mostly defense here, with the occasional receiver or offensive lineman.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Nick Perry, DE/OLB
    1. Devon Still, DE/DT
    2. Harrison Smith, SS
    2. Vinny Curry, DE/OLB
    3. Greg Childs, WR
    4. Ryan Steed, CB

  16. New York Giants
Jerry Reese usually takes the best player on his board, and I don’t see why that would change this April. The Giants don’t have any glaring needs.

Ideal 2012 NFL Draft (First Four Rounds):
    1. Coby Fleener, TE
    2. Lamar Miller, RB
    3. Tank Carder, LB
    4. Andrew Datko, OT
    4. Ryan Broyles, WR
