Charlie Campbell's 2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Picks 1-16

  1. Carolina Panthers: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
The Panthers could use a difference-maker on the inside of their defensive line.

Short totaled 54 tackles with 17 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks and one forced fumble in 2011. He was quiet in the early going, but really played well in the the second half of the season.

Short benefited greatly from Ryan Kerrigan in his first two years. Short recorded six sacks and 12.5 tackles for a loss next to Kerrigan in 2010. Short also had 41 tackles with two blocked kicks. The 6-foot-4, 310-pounder is strong and athletic. Purdue does an excellent job of producing quality NFL defensive linemen, and he appears to be the next in line.

Pick change; previously Bjoern Werner, DE

  2. Dallas Cowboys: Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma
Many projected Dallas to take either a safety or a defensive tackle. For two straight drafts, the Cowboys have shown interest in defensive linemen, specifically J.J. Watt and Dontari Poe, before going with another position. Perhaps they will do that again with a lineman like Jonathan Hankins. Dallas has needs at each position, so the team could go either direction next year.

Jefferson was the Big XII Freshman of the Year in 2010. He started nine games and recorded 65 tackles with seven tackles for a loss, two sacks, two interceptions and seven passes broken up. The athletic and instinctive Jefferson (5-10, 199) played excellent football last season. He totaled 74 tackles with 7.5 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, four interceptions, three passes broken up and a forced fumble.

Pick change; previously Jonathan Hankins, DT

  3. Cincinnati Bengals: Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina
Cincinnati took a tepid approach to its need at running back, so it wouldn't be surprising if the position is a weakness in 2012.

Lattimore missed the end of the 2011 season after he tore some of his knee ligaments. Lattimore is a special player, and if he can regain his pre-injury form, should be a first-round pick. The 6-foot-1, 232-pounder mixes big size with good speed. Through seven games in 2011, the sophomore Lattimore was one of the nation’s leaders in rushing. He ran for 818 yards on 163 carries (5.02 average) with 10 touchdowns in his shortened season.

Lattimore is a powerful workhorse back who rocked college football as a freshman. He ran for 1,197 yards and averaged 4.8 yards per carry with 17 touchdowns in 2010.

Pick change; previously Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB

  4. Philadelphia Eagles: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
The Eagles may have to grab some cornerback help. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is in a contract year, and they traded away Asante Samuel. If Philadelphia doesn't have players step up, the cornerback position could be a real weakness in 2012.

Banks has been a solid player for the Bulldogs. Entering his senior year, the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder is already experienced and battle tested. He played a lot as a freshman in 2009 with 33 tackles and four interceptions, including two pick-sixs against Tim Tebow.

Banks totaled 54 tackles with three interceptions as a sophomore. He totaled 71 tackles with five interceptions, three sacks, three forced fumbles and nine passes broken up in 2011. It wouldn't be surprising if Banks' numbers decline as a senior since teams will probably avoid throwing at him.

Pick change; previously Barrett Jones, OT/G/C

  5. Pittsburgh Steelers: Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame
Pittsburgh could target more help at linebacker. Soon the Steelers will have to get a young difference-maker for their inside linebackers.

Manti Te'o was a tackling machine for the Fighting Irish as sophmore in 2010, making 133 tackles. He also recorded 9.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and one forced fumble. Te'o recorded 128 tackles with 13.5 tackles for a loss and five sacks this season. He led Notre Dame in sacks and tackles.

Te'o has the size (6-2, 255) and speed to adapt quickly to the NFL. He is fast enough to play the middle in a 4-3 defense, with the bulk to function on the inside of a 3-4 defense.

Pick change; previously Marcus Lattimore, RB

  6. Chicago Bears: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
The Bears need to get some young talent at the cornerback position.

The younger brother of Marcus Trufant, Desmond Trufant had a quality sophomore season in 2010 with 48 tackles, one interception and four passes broken up. The 6-foot, 184-pounder has the speed and agility to be a good cover corner. Trufant had two interceptions with 14 passes broken up, two forced fumbles and 64 tackles this year. He has shown the ability to be a good blitzer.

Trufant had an excellent season last year and is one of the best corners in the Pac-12.

Pick change; previously Manti Te'o, ILB

  7. New York Jets: Sean Porter, OLB, Texas A&M
The Jets could use a long-term edge-rusher. Porter would be a great fit in their defense.

Porter was one of the top pass-rushers in college football in 2011. He had 9.5 sacks with 79 tackles, 17 tackles for a loss and one forced fumble.

Porter has similar size and speed to Von Miller, although Porter may not be quite as explosive. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder should add some bulk before coming out since he projects best as a 3-4 outside linebacker.

  8. Detroit Lions: Barrett Jones, OT/G/C, Alabama
Detroit once again lands a top-10 talent who falls in the draft.

It would be an understatement to say that Barrett Jones is smart and versatile. He could actually start at any of the five positions on the offensive line in the NFL. Given his flexibility as an offensive lineman, Alabama is moving him to center for the 2012 season.

The 6-foot-5, 311-pounder has proven to be a legitimate first-round left tackle prospect for the NFL. The Crimson Tide moved him to the blind side in 2011, and the junior excelled. He was chosen as a First-Team All-SEC selection.

In his first major test of 2011, Jones was playing very well against LSU, before an ankle injury in the second half. Early in the game, he was doing a phenomenal job of run blocking for Trent Richardson, and Alabama had a lot of success running behind Jones. He also wasn't needing, or getting, any help with the Tigers' speed-rushers on the edge.

Jones was solid, not allowing a sack or pressure. The ankle injury seemed to rob him of the power to drive block, but he was a warrior who played through the injury and wasn't a liability while playing hurt.

Jones played well in the rematch, doing a good job of winning his blocks. He won the 2011 Outland Trophy as the nation's best interior lineman on offense or defense.

Jones started 14 games in 2009 as a redshirt freshman when Mark Ingram ran his way to a Heisman. Jones stayed at right guard and started 11 games in 2010. He was also named as a First-Team All-SEC selection as sophmore.

Pick change; previously Johnthan Banks, CB

  9. Denver Broncos: Tyrann Mathieu, CB/S, LSU
The Broncos could use some youth at corner with Champ Bailey aging.

Mathieu (5-9, 175) would be higher in this mock if it weren't for his size. The 19-year-old still has plenty of time to add mass, so his stock could rise if he accomplishes that.

Mathieu plays much bigger than his measurements, and anyone who watched LSU in the 2011 season noticed that he is a pure football player with off-the-charts instinct. Mathieu led LSU in tackles with 76. He also had 7.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, two interceptions and nine passes broken up.

Additionally, Mathieu served as a punt returner in 2011, averaging 16 yards per return with two brought back for touchdowns. He will have to clean up some off-the-field issues.

Pick change; previously DeMarcus Milliner, CB

  10. Atlanta Falcons: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
The Falcons will probably be looking hard at the tight end position in the 2013 draft.

Eifert played really well for the Fighting Irish in 2011. He is a natural receiver. Eifert (6-6, 249) runs good routes, has strong hands, can take big hits and is quick. He totaled 63 receptions for 803 yards and five touchdowns last season. Eifert totaled 27 receptions for 352 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman in 2010.

  11. Houston Texans: Da'Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee
The Texans reached in the third round on DeVier Posey, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if that pick is a bust. Andre Johnson is aging, and Houston could land a future No. 1 receiver in the 2013 draft.

Rogers had a breakout sophomore season in 2011, catching 67 passes for 1,040 yards and nine touchdowns. He is a fast and physical wide receiver who has a lot of upside. Rogers had some off-the-field issues late last season, and he was rumored to be kicked out or suspended. Those rumors turned out to be just that, rumors, but his situation is worth keeping an eye on for NFL teams.

  12. San Francisco 49ers: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
The 49ers could use some youth along the defensive line.

Hankins is a massive tackle who takes up a lot of space and blockers at the point of attack. The 6-foot-4, 317-pounder had a strong 2011 season as a sophomore. He was a fabulous run defender at that point of attack and totaled 67 tackles. Hankins also had 11 tackles for a loss and three sacks. He had 16 tackles and a sack as a freshman.

Hankins has a lot of upside and could be in for a big 2012 season.

Pick change; previously Tony Jefferson, S

  13. New England Patriots: DeMarcus Milliner, CB, Alabama
The Patriots have a tendency to target defensive backs with late first-round and second-round picks.

Milliner, as a sophomore, worked his way onto the field with a secondary stacked with NFL talent in Mark Barron, Dre Kirkpatrick, Robert Lester and DeQuan Menzie. Milliner had 27 tackles with three interceptions and nine pases broken up in 2011. He played extremely well. With three of those four teammates in the NFL, Milliner will stand out even more in 2012.

Pick change; previously Tyrann Mathieu, CB

  14. New York Giants: Ricky Wagner, OT, Wisconsin
The Giants land an offensive tackle. They could use youth at the position.

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Wagner is a dominant run blocker who is an effective pass blocker in the Big Ten. He could potentially move to the right side of the offensive line in the NFL.

Wagner is a powerful force who can blast defenders off the line of scrimmage. He also does a quality job of blocking in the open field on screen passes. As long as Wagner stays healthy, he will open up a lot of holes for Montee Ball as a senior.

  15. Baltimore Ravens: Marquess Wilson, WR, Washington State
The Ravens could use more receiver help. When will Baltimore land a young, talented receiver? Maybe next April.

Wilson was one of the best wide outs in college football in 2011. He made 82 catches for 1,388 yards and 12 touchdowns. Wilson had a dynamic freshman season with 55 receptions for 1,006 yards and six touchdowns.

The 6-foot-3, 181-pounder has a big-time skill set. The one thing that could be missing from his game is the speed to separate from defensive backs. Many of Wilson's catches are contested. He would be a good fit in a West Coast offense.

Pick change; previously T.J. McDonald, S

  16. Green Bay Packers: T.J. McDonald, S, USC
The Packers could use another safety with Nick Collins being let go this offseason.

In 2010, McDonald led USC in tackles with 89, including three tackles for a loss, four passes broken up, three interceptions and a blocked punt. He was named an All-Pac-10 Second-Team selection.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder intercepted Arizona quarterback Nick Foles twice in as a junior in 2011. McDonald had 67 tackles with three picks, two passes broken up and a blocked kick as well. He has the flexibility to play strong or free safety and would fit in any NFL defense. McDonald has good instincts and is a hard hitter.

Pick change; previously Khaled Holmes, C

Breakout player you must watch Datone Jones UCLA... slow year but is a freak and very dominant and will turn many heads... plays every position on the dline... and is athletic enough to play outside linebacker.

Do you really think the Titans will be drafting 9th?? I really question your knowledge of the NFL if that is what you think. They are actually extremely underrated and will be fighting for a wildcard spot. I would put money on it.

Why would the Saints pick at sixteen???? And if they do why wouldn't they take Tyran Mathieu???? They just lost Tracy Porter and have no depth at corner other than Johnny Patrick... They will be winning the Super Bowl after they get Drew Brees signed.

Good job on the mock. One thing I don't agree with is Landry Jones going in the 2nd round. The NFL is high on QB's every year so Landry Jones will be snagged up in the early part of the 1st Round. With the exceptions of Luck and RG3, this years QB class was extremely weak and 4 QB's went in the first round!

Justin Hunter is the more talented Tennessee WR actually. He just missed most of last year with injury. If he comes back 100 % (which I think he will) he deserves a look around that same range. And take Rogers down a notch. He only put up those numbers because Hunter was out.

Horrible. BILLS PICK 11?? Hahahah clown they will make the playoffs... And no they don't need another OL you clown. Bills had th best OL last year, least amount of sacks allowed and they added Cordy Glenn, they will draft WR/LB/QB in round 1, it will be one of those positions.

Hooray! Finally a good pick in the first round for the Steelers! Te'o ftw.

Now I'll point out the flaws about the second round. Same thing as I said before about the running game. Offensive line and play calling dictate how effective it is, not only the quality of the running back. Going by this mock, give them Robert Lester instead. Ryan Clark will turn 33 mid-season and Polamalu will turn 32 right before the draft, they need a safety early.

Seahawks have spent the majority of the last 3 drafts addressing D and already have a top 10 Defense. Their obvious areas of need is more depth at tight end or a difference maker at wide receiver. There are only 2 possibilites for this shoddy journalism -
1) Matt Millen has assaulted Walter with LSD laced kelsaiba and now Walt thinks he should just keep picking the same thing until the Seahawks do what they are damn well told! or
2) Walt is just too lazy to research any team not within his own area code. Lets have a poll to see which one everybody thinks it is!

So I guess Alan Branch, Brandon Mebane, Jason Jones, and Clinton McDonald (I can understand him) are just not there anymore and Jaye Howard is now like a starter? Funny, really funny. D-line is probably the last thing we need. How about a receiver or tight end?

Beatty is entering year 4, Brewer year 2, and Moley and Mccants are rookies. I could see the argument for talent and on that merit, the pick makes sense.

At the same time with 5 picks spent on oline, I see Amore likely pick for Rd 1 as safety or pass rush given the strength of the draft, plus need for salary flexibility at those spots.

@ Charlie Campbell, or anyone else who wants to comment:

How do you guys think the 2013 TE class stacks up with the 2012 TE class?

1) Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame
2) Joseph Fauria, UCLA
3) Jake Stoneburner, Ohio State

vs

1) Coby Fleener, Stanford, Colts
2) Dwayne Allen, Clemson, Colts
3) Ledarius Green, Louisiana-Lafayette, Chargers

Falcon's Fan here:

The TE talent drop off from the top 3 listed is not that significant of a drop off as other critical positions of needs for the Falcons. One of the top 3 TE's will be available with the Falcon's 2nd round pick if they choose to address that position early.

However a talent drop off for a good pass rushing DE or a quality LT is a tremendous drop off. The Falcon's need a TE no doubt but the offense is potent enough that a LT or DE have to be more pressing come 1st round.

You have them taking Tyler Eifert who is a great prospect in the 1st but no way the Falcons take him if a good LT or DE is available at that pick.

You have them taking a ROT (Alex Hurst) in the 2nd. Tyson Clabo is a Pro Bowler who has that position locked down & they took a OT in the 3rd this year (Lamar Holmes) who will have at least a year minimum to show he can be the back up swing tackle.

So taking Alex Hurst a primary RT/back-up makes no sense. At least a potential left tackle if you are addressing OT in any round, which they have in Lamar Holmes.

Not sure if you read these comments and I know its hard to stay up on all the teams needs. But I hope you will strongly consider my points. Love the sight.

Tried to indent but did not work so re-posted so my comment wasn't so jumbled up.
